Mixis strategies and resting eeg production of rotifers living in temporally-varying habitats

A dynamic model based on six differential equations has been developed to explore the control of mixis of rotifers living in temporally-varying habitats. The equations give variation rates of amictic females, three stages of mictic females, males and resting eggs. The model takes into account some constraints on mixis (e.g., male-female encounter probability and effort involved in resting egg production) and its predictions have been generated by computer simulation using parameter values from the literature. Smartphone data analysis for human activity recognition

In recent years, the percentage of the population owning a smartphone has increased significantly. These devices provide the user with more and more functions, so that anyone is encouraged to carry one during the day, implicitly producing that can be analysed to infer knowledge of the user’s context. In this work we present a novel framework for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using smartphone data captured by means of embedded triaxial accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. Measurement of the energy distribution of electrons escaping minimum-B ECR plasmas

The measurement of the electron energy distribution (EED) of electrons escaping axially from a minimum-B electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) is reported. The experimental data were recorded with a room-temperature 14 GHz ECRIS at the JYFL accelerator laboratory. The electrons escaping through the extraction mirror of the ion source were detected with a secondary electron amplifier placed downstream from a dipole magnet serving as an electron spectrometer with 500 eV resolution. Measurement of the SMC muon beam polarisation using the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off polarised electrons

A muon beam polarimeter was built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for beam energies of 100 and 190 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off the polarised electrons of a ferromagnetic target whose magnetisation is periodically reversed. At muon energies of 100 and 190 GeV the measured polarisation is P-mu = -0.80 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) and P-mu = - 0.797 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.), respectively. These results agree with measurements of the beam polarisation using a shape analysis of the decay positron energy spectrum. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Implementation of a wireless instrumented sphere for fruit processing

The aim of this study was to implement a wireless instrumented sphere to study the critical points in a citrus packing line by real-time measuring the impacts experienced by fruits. The noncommercial device was based on a MEMS (microelectro-mechanical system) sensor node with a sensing range from ±1 g to ±400 g (g = 9.8 m s-2), a ferroelectric RAM (FRAM) memory, a radio frequency (RF) transmitter, a microcontroller, and a 75 mAh lithium battery.
