Anaerobic oxidation of methane in sediments of a nitrate-rich, oligo-mesotrophic boreal lake
2021
AbstractThe identity of electron acceptors in promoting anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in the sediments of boreal lakes is currently unknown. Here, we studied the AOM rate of sediment slurries collected from three profundal stations of a nitrate-rich, oligo-mesotrophic, boreal lake (Lake Pääjärvi, Finland), under varying nitrate concentrations using 13C-labelling. Furthermore, vertical profiles of the sediment and porewater geochemistry, and the microbial communities (16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing) were analyzed. Despite geochemical data indicating that simultaneous consumption of nitrate and methane took place at the sediment layers chosen for incubations, AOM rate…
Synthesis and support composition effects on CH4 partial oxidation over Ni–CeLa oxides
2015
Abstract Two series of Ni (6 wt%) catalysts supported over CeO 2 , La 2 O 3 and mixed CeO 2 –La 2 O 3 were prepared by co-precipitation and by wet-impregnation. The effect of the two Ni loading procedures on the catalyst structural properties was investigated by XRD, TPR and XPS. The catalytic behavior of the catalysts was tested in the methane partial oxidation reaction performed at 1 atm in a temperature range of 400–800 °C using dilute feed gas mixture with CH 4 /O 2 = 2 and gas hourly space velocity of 60,000 ml g −1 h −1 . Total methane combustion was observed within the 450 °C ≤ T ≤ 650 °C temperature range. Above 650 °C partial oxidation of methane started to occur, reaching at 80…
Oxidation, efflux, and isotopic fractionation of methane during autumnal turnover in a polyhumic, boreal lake
2007
[1] We studied the oxidation and efflux of methane (CH4) in a small, polyhumic lake, Mekkojarvi (southern Finland), during 6 weeks in autumn when the stability of the water mass first weakened, temporarily restabilized, and finally mixed completely. During the summer stratification period, CH4 had accumulated in the anoxic hypolimnion to high concentrations (>150 mmol m−3). Gradual mixing of the water column during the autumn allowed access to both oxygen and CH4 by aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) deeper in the water column. Thus the bulk (∼83–88%) of the CH4 accumulated in the hypolimnion was subsequently consumed by MOB while only 12–17% was lost from the lake to the atmosphere a…
Simultaneous application of vacuum and sweep gas in a polypropylene membrane contactor for the recovery of dissolved methane from water
2021
Abstract Vacuum and nitrogen as sweep gas were used simultaneously (combination mode) to generate the driving force in a microporous polypropylene membrane contactor for the recovery of dissolved methane from water. Experiments were carried out under different liquid flow-rates (5.0–28.0 L h−1), N2 flow-rates (0.5–1.5 L h−1) and vacuum pressures (0–480 mbar). The maximum removal efficiency of methane was >90% at moderate values of gas-to-liquid ratios (G/L) and vacuum of 0.2 and ≤ 200 mbar, respectively. Removal efficiencies obtained in combination mode were usually higher than when using vacuum or sweep gas, separately. To achieve a methane content >35% in the recovered gas, G/L values low…
Unique regioselectivity in the C(sp3)-H α-alkylation of amines: the benzoxazole moiety as a removable directing group.
2014
The benzoxazol-2-yl- substituent was found to act as a removable activating and directing group in the Ir-catalyzed alkylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds adjacent to nitrogen in secondary amines. It can be easily introduced by oxidative coupling or by an SNAr reaction, and it can be removed by hydroxide or by hydride reduction. For 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines, activation exclusively takes place in the 3-position. A variety of activated as well as unactivated terminal olefins are suitable reaction partners.
Density, Speed of Sound, and Refractive Index of 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate with Acetone, Methyl Acetate, and Ethyl Acetat…
2009
Densities, speeds of sound, and refractive indices of the binary mixtures of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([emim][triflate]) with acetone, methyl acetate, and ethyl acetate were experimentally measured over the whole range of compositions at T = (278.15 to 328.15) K and a pressure of 0.1 MPa. From these experimental data, excess molar volumes, excess isentropic compressibilities, molar refractions, and deviations in refractive indices have been calculated and fitted to an extended version of the Redlich−Kister equation, which takes into account the dependence on composition and temperature simultaneously. The Prigogine−Flory−Patterson theory has been used to specula…
Organotin(IV) trifluoromethanesulfonates chemistry: Isolation and characterization of a new di-n-butyl derivative presenting a Sn3O3 core
2012
Abstract Reaction of the dimeric hydroxo di-n-butylstannane trifluoromethanesulfonato complex [n-Bu2Sn(OH)(H2O)(CF3SO3)]2 (1) with a mixture of anthracene (C14H10, Ant) and phenazine (C12H8N2, Phz) in dichloromethane at room temperature yielded the novel di-n-butyltin(IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate salt {[n-Bu2Sn(H2O)]2O·n-Bu2Sn(OH)2}(CF3SO3)2 (2), together with the co-crystallization of phenazinium trifluoromethanesulfonate salts ([C12H9N2][CF3SO3], PhzH) collected in the solid state in two distinct self-assembled architectures, 3 and 4, showing π–π stacking interactions, and involving the intercalation of free molecules of phenazine and anthracene, respectively. Complex 2 is a cationic tri…
Shedding light on biogas: a transparent reactor triggers the development of a biofilm dominated by Rhodopseudomonas faecalis that holds potential for…
2019
AbstractConventional anaerobic digesters intended for the production of biogas usually operate in complete darkness. Therefore, little is known about the effect of light on microbial communities operating in anaerobic digesters. In the present work, we have studied through 16S rRNA gene amplicon Nanopore sequencing and shotgun metagenomic sequencing the taxonomic and functional structure of the microbial community forming a biofilm on the inner wall of a lab-scale transparent anaerobic biodigester illuminated with natural sunlight. The biofilm was composed of microorganisms involved in the four metabolic processes needed for biogas production. The biofilm proved surprisingly rich in Rhodops…
Using 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate as an Entrainer for the Extractive Distillation of Ethanol + Water Mixtures
2009
Isobaric vapor−liquid equilibria (VLE) for the ethanol + water + [emim][triflate] ternary system have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The ethanol + water binary system was also obtained. Furthermore, data were simulated with the Mock’s electrolyte nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) model, using the solvent−solvent interaction parameters obtained from VLE data of the ethanol + water system and taking the solvent−ionic liquid (IL) interaction parameters for the other binary systems from previous works. The agreement between experimental and calculated data is very good, showing the predictive capacity of the model. The addition of [emim][triflate] produces the disappearance of …
Recycling and fluxes of carbon gases in a stratified boreal lake following experimental carbon addition
2014
Partly anoxic stratified humic lakes are important sources of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. We followed the fate of CH4 and CO2 in a small boreal stratified lake, Alinen Mustajärvi, during 2007–2009. In 2008 and 2009 the lake received additions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) around 16‰ higher than that of local allochthonous DOC. Carbon transformations in the water column were studied by measurements of δ13C of CH4 and of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Furthermore, CH4 and CO2 production, consumption and emissions were estimated. Methane oxidation was estimated by a diffusion gradient method. The amount, lo…
