GraphoGame – a catalyst for multi-level promotion of literacy in diverse contexts
2015
GraphoGame (GG) is originally a technology-based intervention method for supporting children with reading difficulties. It is now known that children who face problems in reading acquisition have difficulties in learning to differentiate and manipulate speech sounds and consequently, in connecting these sounds to corresponding letters. GG was developed to provide intensive training in matching speech sounds and larger units of speech to their written counterparts. GG has been shown to benefit children with reading difficulties and the game is now available for all Finnish school children for literacy support. Presently millions of children in Africa fail to learn to read despite years of pr…
Parental and Infant Gender Factors in Parent-Infant Interaction: State-Space Dynamic Analysis.
2017
This study aimed to investigate the influence of parental gender on their interaction with their infants, considering, as well, the role of the infant’s gender. The State Space Grid (SSG) method, a graphical tool based on the non-linear dynamic system (NDS) approach was used to analyze the interaction, in Free-Play setting, of 52 infants, aged 6 to 10 months, divided into two groups: half of the infants interacted with their fathers and half with their mothers. There were 50% boys in each group. MANOVA results showed no differential parenting of boys and girls. Additionally, mothers and fathers showed no differences in the Diversity of behavioral dyadic states nor in Predictability. However…
Identity and socio-educational responsibilities of the educational mediator and the intercultural mediator: towards a clarification of functions
2012
Insights into the derivative-based method for nonlinear mediation models
2022
Associational mediation analysis has generally relied on the linearity of models to estimate the indirect effect as a product of regression coefficients. Very few examples of generalisations to nonlinear settings have been proposed, including a derivative-based method that, however, is far from being widely spread among scholars. In this paper, we clarify some aspects of such an approach to nonlinear mediation models, which have not been addressed by the previous literature. In addition, we run a simulation study to compare confidence intervals for the indirect effect obtained through different approaches.
Lithotripsy of Calcified Aortic Valve Leaflets by a Novel Ultrasound Transcatheter-Based Device
2022
The increasing incidence of calcific aortic valve disease necessitates the elaboration of new strategies to retard the progression of the pathology with an innovative solution. While the increasing diffusion of the transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs) allows a mini-invasive approach to aortic valve substitution as an alternative to conventional surgical replacement (SAVR) in an always larger patient population, TAVR implantation still has contraindications for young patients. In addition, it is liable to undergo calcification with the consequent necessity of re-intervention with conventional valve surgery or repeated implantation in the so-called TAVR-in-TAVR procedure. Inspired …
Data from: Give me a sample of air and I will tell which species are found from your region – molecular identification of fungi from airborne spore s…
2018
Fungi are a megadiverse group of organisms, they play major roles in ecosystem functioning, and are important for human health, food production, and nature conservation. Our knowledge on fungal diversity and fungal ecology is however still very limited, in part because surveying and identifying fungi is time demanding and requires expert knowledge. We present a method that allows anyone to generate a list of fungal species likely to occur in a region of interest, with minimal effort and without requiring taxonomical expertise. The method consists of using a cyclone sampler to acquire fungal spores directly from the air to an Eppendorf tube, and applying DNA barcoding with probabilistic spec…
Data from: Investigating hybridization between the two sibling bat species Myotis myotis and M. blythii from guano in a natural mixed maternity colony
2017
Because they can form seasonal mixed-species groups during mating and maternal care, bats are exciting models for studying interspecific hybridization. Myotis myotis and M. blythii are genetically close and morphologically almost identical, but they differ in some aspects of their ecology and life-history traits. When they occur in sympatry, they often form large mixed maternity colonies, in which their relative abundance can vary across time due to a shift in the timing of parturition. For the first time, we used non-invasive genetic methods to assess the hybridization rate and colony composition in a maternity colony of M. myotis and M. blythii located in the French Alps. Bat guano was co…
Data from: Enriched rearing environment and wild genetic background can enhance survival and disease resistance of salmonid fishes during parasite ep…
2016
The importance and volume of aquaculture is increasing world-wide. Rearing practices play a key role in determining growth rate, survival and disease resistance in aquaculture fishes. Recent evidence suggests that in comparison with a standard stimulus-poor rearing environment, an enriched or variable rearing environment has significant positive effects on several traits underlying growth and well-being of fish. However, the effect of enriched rearing on one of the most important threats for aquaculture development, occurrence of parasitic infections, remains unknown. We used surveillance data of experimental salmonid populations of wild and hatchery origin under semi-natural parasite expos…
Artificial Neural Network Based Abdominal Organ Segmentations: A Review
2015
There are many neural network based abdominal organ segmentation approaches from medical images. Computed tomography images were mostly used in these approaches. Applied techniques are usually based on prior information regarding position, shape, and size of organs in these methods. In the literature, there are only a few neural network based techniques that were implemented to segment abdominal organs from magnetic resonance based images. In this paper, we present these methods and their results.
Hybrid segmentation and virtual bronchoscopy based on CT images1
2004
Rationale and objectives Introduction of combination of the segmentation tool SegoMeTex and the virtual endoscopy system VIVENDI to perform virtual endoscopic inspections of the human lung. This virtual bronchoscopy system enables visualization of the tracheobronchial tree down to seventh generation. Furthermore, the modified virtual system visualizes hidden structures such as segmented vascular system or tumors. Materials and methods The segmentation is based on image data acquired by a multislice computed tomography scanner. SegoMeTex is used to segment the tracheobronchial tree by a hybrid system with minimal user action. Similarly, the complementary pulmonary arterial can be segmented, …
