Eight-membered Rings with Two Heteroatoms 1,3

2008

This chapter deals with heterocine rings with two heteroatoms in a 1,3-relationship, namely 1,3-diazocine, 2H-1,3-oxazocine, 2H-1,3-thiazocine, 4H-1,3-dioxocin, and 4H-1,3-dithiocin. On the 4H-1,3-oxathiocin ring system, belonging to the diheterocine family, in the past decade, no chemistry was reported. This chapter covers the literature from 1996 to 2006 and also reports those articles published in 1995 which were not reported in CHEC-II(1996). In this edition, in addition to the uncondensed derivatives, eight-membered 1,2-heterocycles fused to five-, six-, and seven-membered carbocycles or heterocycles are covered. Bridged heterocines, which actually constitute the majority of the compou…

Big Data in metagenomics: Apache Spark vs MPI.

2020

The progress of next-generation sequencing has lead to the availability of massive data sets used by a wide range of applications in biology and medicine. This has sparked significant interest in using modern Big Data technologies to process this large amount of information in distributed memory clusters of commodity hardware. Several approaches based on solutions such as Apache Hadoop or Apache Spark, have been proposed. These solutions allow developers to focus on the problem while the need to deal with low level details, such as data distribution schemes or communication patterns among processing nodes, can be ignored. However, performance and scalability are also of high importance when…

FASTA/Q data compressors for MapReduce-Hadoop genomics: space and time savings made easy

2021

Abstract Background Storage of genomic data is a major cost for the Life Sciences, effectively addressed via specialized data compression methods. For the same reasons of abundance in data production, the use of Big Data technologies is seen as the future for genomic data storage and processing, with MapReduce-Hadoop as leaders. Somewhat surprisingly, none of the specialized FASTA/Q compressors is available within Hadoop. Indeed, their deployment there is not exactly immediate. Such a State of the Art is problematic. Results We provide major advances in two different directions. Methodologically, we propose two general methods, with the corresponding software, that make very easy to deploy …

Digital epidemiology: assessment of measles infection through Google Trends mechanism in Italy.

2019

Introduction. The primary aim of this study is to evaluate the temporal correlation between Google Trends and the data on measles infection arising from the conventional surveillance system, reported by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità's (ISS) bulletin. Moreover, this study is also aimed at forecasting the trends of the reported infectious diseases cases over time. Materials and Methods. The reported cases of measles were selected from January 2013 until October 2018. The data on Internet searches have been obtained from Google Trends; the research data referred to the first 48 weeks of year 2017 have been aggregated on a weekly basis. The search volume provided by Google Trends has a relat…

Cluster-based active learning for compact image classification

2010

In this paper, we consider active sampling to label pixels grouped with hierarchical clustering. The objective of the method is to match the data relationships discovered by the clustering algorithm with the user's desired class semantics. The first is represented as a complete tree to be pruned and the second is iteratively provided by the user. The active learning algorithm proposed searches the pruning of the tree that best matches the labels of the sampled points. By choosing the part of the tree to sample from according to current pruning's uncertainty, sampling is focused on most uncertain clusters. This way, large clusters for which the class membership is already fixed are no longer…

An efficient upper bound of the rotation distance of binary trees

2000

A polynomial time algorithm is developed for computing an upper bound for the rotation distance of binary trees and equivalently for the diagonal-flip distance of convex polygons triangulations. Ordinal tools are used.

Metaphysics of cosmological models

2023

This article aims to address the metaphysical dimension of cosmological models, be they mythological, philosophical, religious or modern scientific models, using multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary methodology. Such an approach is a novelty, both in the theological field and in the philosophical field and secular sciences, which studies the origin of humans and the universe. Contribution: The originality of this article consists in introducing the concept of transcendental cosmology, which, along with spiritual cosmology, can be a serious theological and philosophical reply to the Bing Bang theory.

Coupling between criticality and gelation in "sticky" spheres: a structural analysis.

2018

We combine experiments and simulations to study the link between criticality and gelation in sticky spheres. We employ confocal microscopy to image colloid-polymer mixtures and Monte Carlo simulations of the square-well (SW) potential as a reference model. To this end, we map our experimental samples onto the SW model. We find an excellent structural agreement between experiments and simulations, both for locally favored structures at the single particle level and large-scale fluctuations at criticality. We follow in detail the rapid structural change in the critical fluid when approaching the gas-liquid binodal and highlight the role of critical density fluctuations for this structural cro…

Monte Carlo Study of Critical Point Shifts in Thin Films

2000

We report preliminary results of Monte Carlo simulations of critical point shifts in thin slit-like capillaries. By making use of the isomorphism with an Ising model subject to bulk and surface fields and employing a multi-cluster update algorithm with ghost-spin term we obtain the coexistence curve and the behavior at the critical point for various film thicknesses D.
