Intercomparison between MRI and stereovision/PIV measurements for diagnosis of aorta pathologies

2015

International audience; The objective of the study is to validate the ability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to perform measurements of deformations and internal flow of an aortic phantom with aneurysm. An in-vitro measurement experimental device to simulate blood flow was developed. It was tested within MRI and within stereovision and particle image velocimetry (PIV) devices. The measurement results are well correlated and can be used to establish a preoperative diagnosis based on computed parietal stresses with a finite element model (FEM).

Periferie metropolitane e forme insediative a Palermo

2008

The metropolitan suburbs, evidence new dynamics and diffusion of the present urbanization processes, above all, the various nature of the phenomenon. They are emergent elements of new metropolitan landscape; they show the deep changes happened in the economic structure of our society; they produce important effects for organization of the local communities and for the continuous loss of agricultural spaces and of natural resources. The paper proposes to analyze the configurations of the structure spaces of the suburbs of the metropolitan area of Palermo characterizing some the processes (dispersion, sprawl, thicken, substitution, polarization, transformation...) and the constituent elements…

Palermo : an incomplete post-metropolitan area

2017

Palermo is the most populated and important city of Sicily, and the fifth most populated city in Italy. Although it is widely known for its marginality. One of the traditional cli- chés connected to Palermo and Sicily is that its people have developed a passive attitude as a consequence of the many foreign dominations of the island. Most scholars point out that the city of Palermo has never been a metropolis and therefore there is no way it could be considered a post-metropolis, having almost entirely skipped the metropolitan phase. Today, the Regione Sicilia is work- ing on a reform that should lead to the città metropolitana (metropolitan city) of Palermo. We have chosen to consider the m…

The Polarizing Impact of News Coverage on Populist Attitudes in the Public: Evidence From a Panel Study in Four European Democracies

2017

This study explores how news messages carrying parts of the populist ideology contribute to a polarization of public opinion about populism. It combines a content analysis of news coverage on two policy areas (N = 7,119 stories) with a two-wave panel survey (N = 2,338) in four European metropolitan regions (Berlin, Paris, London, and Zurich). In three regions, unopposed media messages with a populist stance have a conditional effect on populist attitudes that depends on prior convictions. A higher dose of exposure to populist news coverage enhances both prior agreement and disagreement with populism. Although the observed interaction patterns vary between regions, the general picture sugges…

Misión FLEX (Fluorescence Explorer): Observación de la fluorescencia por teledetección como nueva técnica de estudio del estado de la vegetación terr…

2014

[EN] FLEX (Fluorescence EXplorer) is a candidate for the 8th ESA’s Earth Explorer mission. Is the first space mission specifically designed for the estimation of vegetation fluorescence on a global scale. The mission is proposed to fly in tandem with the future ESA´s Sentinel-3 satellite. It is foreseen that the information obtained by Sentinel-3 will be supplemented with that provided by FLORIS (Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer) onboard FLEX. FLORIS will measure the radiance between 500 and 800 nm with a bandwidth between 0.1 nm and 2 nm, providing images with a 150 km swath and 300 m pixel size. This information will allow a detailed monitoring of vegetation dynamics, by improving the me…

Prevalence of Strabismus and Its Impact on Vision-Related Quality of Life

2020

Purpose This study investigates the prevalence of manifest strabismus and its subtypes in adulthood and analyzes the risk factors and its impact on vision-related quality of life (VRQoL). Design The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a population-based, observational cohort study. A cross-sectional analysis of the baseline examination was conducted. Participants Participants aged 35 to 74 years were included (n = 15  010). Methods All participants were examined with a comprehensive ophthalmologic and general examination including the Hirschberg corneal reflex test to detect manifest strabismus. The following risk factors were analyzed: age, sex, socioeconomic status, birth weight, maternal age…

Ocular Refraction at Birth and Its Development During the First Year of Life in a Large Cohort of Babies in a Single Center in Northern Italy

2020

The purpose of this study was to investigate refraction at birth and during the first year of life in a large cohort of babies born in a single center in Northern Italy. We also aimed to analyze refractive errors in relation to the gestational age at birth. An observational ophthalmological assessment was performed within 24 h of birth on 12,427 newborns. Refraction was examined using streak retinoscopy after the administration of tropicamide (1%). Values in the range of between +0.50 ≤ D ≤ +4.00 were defined as physiological refraction at birth. Newborns with refraction values outside of the physiological range were followed up during the first year of life. Comparative analyses were condu…

2008

Objective: To describe, in patients undergoing colorectal surgery (CRS), the pharmacokinetics of a single, prophylactic preoperative dose of 1,500 mg of metronidazole plus 240 mg gentamicin and measure its efficacy in accordance with the accepted pharmacodynamic and microbiological parameters. Method: Thirty-six patients undergoing CRS agreed to participate in the study. Three blood samples were taken from each. Cmax 15 minutes after finishing the infusion of the mixture, CfinIQ on finishing the surgery, and Cmin between 12 and 24 hours post-administration. The concentrations of metronidazole and gentamicin in each simple were measured and the pharmacokinetic parameters were estimated (dV- …
