Probing the internal environment of PVP networks generated by irradiation with different sources
2010
Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) hydrogels have been synthesised from the aqueous solutions of the same linear polymer by two different radiation sources: electron beams and UV rays. The present investigation couples conventional hydrogel characterisation techniques with the study of the partition equilibria, fluorescence behaviour and release of two different molecular probes, 1-anilino-8-naphthalene sulphonate (ANS) and Thioflavin T (ThT). The two probes have comparable molecular weight and different structural and optical properties. The chemical networks produced upon irradiation in different experimental conditions presented quite distinctive mechanical spectra, yielded to different…
Photocatalytic green synthesis of piperonal in aqueous TiO2 suspension
2014
Abstract Piperonal (heliotropine or 3,4-methylenedioxybenzaldehyde) has been synthesized by oxidizing piperonyl alcohol in aqueous UV-irradiated TiO2 suspensions. This compound was identified by GC–MS chromatography, 1H NMR and melting point determination. The other products of the photoprocess were 1,3-bis(3,4-(methylenedioxy)benzyl) ether (found in traces) and CO2, derived from the parallel pathway of photo-mineralization. Commercial and home-prepared TiO2 samples have been tested and the best selectivity (ca. 35%) was obtained by using the home-prepared ones. The reported green process allows to obtain an added value product (piperonal), upon partial oxidation of a cheap reagent.
Removal of drugs in aqueous systens by photoassisted degradation
2005
Aqueous solutions of tetracycline, lincomycin and ranitidine were irradiated with UV light in homogeneous and heterogeneous systems. Two commercial polycrystalline TiO2 powders (Degussa P25 and Merck) were used as photocatalysts. After 5A h, an appreciable photolytic degradation of tetracycline and ranitidine was observed while the degradation of lincomycin was noticeably lower. As far as the mineralization is concerned, a small decrease of the TOC values was measured in the case of tetracycline whereas negligible variations were found for lincomycin or ranitidine. The presence of the photocatalysts greatly enhanced the degradation rates of the drugs with respect to those observed during th…
Photocatalytic formation of H2 and value-added chemicals in aqueous glucose (Pt)-TiO2 suspension
2016
Abstract Commercial and home prepared bare and Pt-supported TiO2 samples were used as the photocatalysts for the aqueous photo-conversion of glucose at ambient pressure and temperature. Aerobic and anaerobic conditions were used to study the products of glucose degradation both in the liquid (arabinose, erythrose, gluconic acid, glucaric acid, fructose and formic acid) and gaseous (H2 and CO2) phases. The distribution of these molecules was different in the presence of the various powders, depending on the structural and physico-chemical properties of the materials, and Pt resulted essential for the anaerobic production of H2. The home prepared samples resulted more active than the commerci…
Arbitrarily shaped plates analysis via Line Element-Less Method (LEM)
2018
Abstract An innovative procedure is introduced for the analysis of arbitrarily shaped thin plates with various boundary conditions and under generic transverse loading conditions. Framed into Line Element-less Method, a truly meshfree method, this novel approach yields the solution in terms of the deflection function in a straightforward manner, without resorting to any discretization, neither in the domain nor on the boundary. Specifically, expressing the deflection function through a series expansion in terms of harmonic polynomials, it is shown that the proposed method requires only the evaluation of line integrals along the boundary parametric equation. Further, minimization of appropri…
Amor odit inertes (Ars 2, 229): Mobilità didascalica e staticità elegiaca
2005
Un'analisi della precettistica contenuta in Ars 2, 223-250 sulla 'dinamicità' dell'innamorato, letta come voluto rovesciamento, dall'interno, delle categorie spaziali elegiache The precepts of Ars 2, 223-250 on the lover's 'dynamic' attitude are read as a conscious reversal, from within, of the elegiac spatial cathegories.

Crustal dynamics of Mount Vesuvius from 1998 to 2005: Effects on seismicity and fluid circulation
2008
[1] This paper presents the results of hydrogeochemical and seismological studies carried out at Mount Vesuvius during the period June 1998 to December 2005. Hydrogeochemical data show the occurrence of slowly varying long-term variations in the total dissolved salts and bicarbonate contents of the groundwaters, accompanied by a general decline in water temperatures. The temporal distributions of air temperature and rainfall in the Vesuvius area suggest that these variations do not depend on changes in the hydrological regime. The changes in the geochemical parameters are accompanied by slight variations in both the seismicity rate and energy release. A further relationship between seismic …
