Pigmented esthesioneuroblastoma showing dual differentiation following transplantation in nude mice

Esthesioneuroblastoma (ESTH) is a neuroepithelial-cell-derived neoplasm of the olfactory mucosa composed of homogeneous small round cells which contain neurosecretory granules. Melanin has been detected in such tumours only occasionally. Here we describe a new case of ESTH with divergent differentiation. The primary neoplasm was found in a 67 year-old female, involving the left nasal and maxillary sinus; she died of cerebral metastasis ten months after diagnosis. Their role in various physiological conditions and diseases has been emphasized during the last twenty years. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR) were discovered in 1990, ending 25 years of uncertainty about the molecular mechanisms of peroxisome proliferation. Subsequently, PPARs have improved our understanding of adipocyte differentiation. But there is more to PPARs than solving a puzzle about an organelle (the peroxisome) long considered an oddity, and their medical significance goes beyond obesity too. Uniform response of c-raf expression to differentiation induction and inhibition of proliferation in a rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line

The clonal rat rhabdomyosarcoma cell line BA-HAN-1C is composed of proliferating mononuclear cells, some of which spontaneously fuse to terminally differentiated myotube-like giant cells. Both the induction of differentiation by retinoic acid (RA) and by sodium butyrate (NaBut), as well as the inhibition of proliferation by fetal calf serum (FCS)-depleted medium uniformly resulted in the same effects. The Dual Role of the GABAA Receptor in Peripheral Inflammation and Neuroinflammation: A Study in Hyperammonemic Rats

Cognitive and motor impairment in minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) are mediated by neuroinflammation, which is induced by hyperammonemia and peripheral inflammation. GABAergic neurotransmission in the cerebellum is altered in rats with chronic hyperammonemia. The mechanisms by which hyperammonemia induces neuroinflammation remain unknown. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of different NaOCl and EDTA formulations with/without ultrasonic use on smear layer removal and root canal surface characteristics after post space preparation. Changes of oral microcirculation in chemotherapy patients: A possible correlation with mucositis?

The aim of this investigation is to appraise labial oral microcirculation in chemotherapy patients to clarify the effects of cytotoxic agents on oral microvessels. Twenty-five patients with diagnosis of head and neck tumors were recruited in the study. All the patients were submitted to chemotherapy. Labial oral microcirculation was evaluated on labial mucosa using oral videocapillaroscopy. The statistical significance was checked with the Mann–Whitney U-test (P < 0.05).
