Prevalence of Pneumococcal Serotypes in Community-Acquired Pneumonia among Older Adults in Italy: A Multicenter Cohort Study
2022
Pneumococcal community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a leading cause of mortality. Following the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in children, a decrease in the burden of the disease was reported. In parallel, an increase in non-vaccine serotypes was also noted. The objective of this study was to assess the current serotype-specific epidemiology of pneumococci among Italian older adults hospitalized for CAP. A prospective study was conducted between 2017 and 2020 in four Italian regions. Subjects aged ≥65 years hospitalized with confirmed CAP were tested for pneumococci using both pneumococcal urinary antigen and serotype-specific urine antigen tests able to identify all…
Active lighting applied to three-dimensional reconstruction of specular metallic surfaces by polarization imaging
2006
International audience; In the field of industrial vision, the three-dimensional inspection of highly reflective metallic objects is still a delicate task. We deal with a new automated three-dimensional inspection system based on polarization analysis. We first present an extension of the shape-from-polarization method for dielectric surfaces to metallic surfaces. Then, we describe what we believe to be a new way of solving the ambiguity concerning the normal orientation with an active lighting system. Finally, applications to shape-defect detection are discussed, and the efficiency of the system to discriminate defects on specular metallic objects made by stamping and polishing is presente…

Pollutants removal from municipal sewage by means of microalgae
2019
Microalgae are microorganisms able to photosynthesize, namely transforming inorganic substrates and sun light into organic compounds and chemical energy. The industry of microalgae has expanded in the last decades and several applications are now developed, making their biomass interesting under an economic perspective. Nannochlopsis gaditana is one of the most interesting species already employed in industry because of its high content in lipids that could be employed as source for biodiesel synthesis but also in other fields such as cosmetic and pharmaceutic. One of the most promising application is the exploitation of microalgal grow for bioremediating wastewaters polluted with inorganic…
Effects of Polyacrylic Acid Pre-Treatment on Bonded-Dentine Interfaces Created with a Modern Bioactive Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cement and Subjec…
2018
Objectives: Resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGIC) are considered excellent restorative materials with unique therapeutic and anti-cariogenic activity. However, concerns exist regarding the use of polyacrylic acid as a dentine conditioner as it may influence the bonding performance of RMGIC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different protocols for cycling mechanical stress on the bond durability and interfacial ultramorphology of a modern RMGIC applied to dentine pre-treated with/without polyacrylic acid conditioner (PAA). Methods: The RMGIC was applied onto human dentine specimens prepared with silicon-carbide (SiC) abrasive paper with or without the use of a PAA c…
Endocrine disrupters: the new players able to affect the epigenome
2015
Epigenetics represents the way by which the environment is able to program the genome; there are three main levels of epigenetic control on genome: DNA methylation, post-translational histone modification and microRNA expression. The term Epigenetics has been widened by NIH to include “both heritable changes in gene activity and expression but also stable, long-term alterations in the transcriptional potential of a cell that are not necessarily heritable.” These changes might be produced mostly by the early life environment and might affect health influencing the susceptibility to develop diseases, from cancer to mental disorder, during the entire life span. The most studied environmental i…
A Cohesive-frictional Grain-boundary Technique for Microstructural Analysis of Polycrystalline Materials
2018
The development of a 3D microstructural model for the analysis of degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is reviewed in the present chapter. The material is explicitly modelled at the grain level, using integral equations in conjunction with a phenomenological crystal plasticity framework for the bulk grains, and with cohesive-frictional laws to represent inter-granular micro-cracking processes. The method allows to capture the initiation, development and coalescence of damage or plasticity at the aggregate scale. The formulation’s key feature is the representation of the mechanical problem in terms of inter-granular variables only, which allows to reduce the computational cos…
Pro-Degradant Activity of Naturally Occurring Compounds on Polyethylene in Accelerate Weathering Conditions
2019
In this work, naturally occurring compounds, such as Vitamin E (VE) and Ferulic Acid (FA), at high concentrations, have been considered as pro-degradant agents for Low Density Polyethylene (PE). However, all obtained results using the naturally occurring molecules as pro-oxidant agents for PE have been compared with the results achieved using a classical pro-oxidant agent, such as calcium stearate (Ca stearate) and with neat PE. The preliminary characterization, through rheological, mechanical and thermal analysis, of the PE-based systems highlights that the used naturally occurring molecules are able to exert a slight plasticizing action on PE and subsequently the PE rigidity and crystalli…
