Stabilization of an enzymatic extract from Penicillium camemberti containing lipoxygenase and hydroperoxide lyase activities

International audience; The stabilization of an enzymatic extract, obtained from Penicillium camemberti containing lipoxygenase (LOX) and hydroperoxide lyase (HPL) activities, was investigated using selected additives. Although the addition of KCl (86%, w/w) to the enzymatic extract decreased slightly (7%) the LOX activity, it increased HPL activity by 2.25 fold; however, the addition of dextran resulted in the inactivation of both enzymatic activities. The stability of the solid lyophilized enzymatic extract was greater in the presence of KCl than that without it, with ∼100% residual activity after 8 and 4 weeks of storage at −80 °C, for LOX and HPL, respectively. Particularly, species pairs with large distribution ranges and long evolutionary history may have experienced several independent hybridization events over time in different zones of overlap. The most important oenological characteristics of high-quality sparkling wines are aromatic aspect, taste persistence, perlage, high levels of acidity and low pH. Due to hot climate and reduced rainfall that characterize Sicily region, white grape varieties such as Grillo cultivar cultivated in this area are characterized by very low concentrations of malic and tartaric acids. Biological films adhering to the oral soft tissues: Structure, composition, and potential impact on taste perception

The role of free-flowing saliva in taste perception is increasingly recognized, but saliva is also present in the mouth as films intimately associated to soft or hard tissues. On mucosal surfaces, particularly on the tongue, the structure and composition of such films (including its microbial constitutive part) may play a particular role in the sense of taste due to their proximity with the taste anatomical structures. Changes in the physiological and agricultural characteristics of peat-based Bradyrhizobium japonicum inoculants after long-term storage

International audience; Commercial soybean inoculants processed with sterilised peat and stored at 20 °C for 1–8 years were used as experimental materials to assess the changes in the physiological activity of Bradyrhizobium japonicum after storage. Viable counts decreased and physiological characteristics of the bacterium changed during storage, with an increase in the time taken for colony appearance on a medium without yeast extract, an increase in the lag time for nodule appearance on soybean grown in glass tubes and a decrease in survival on seeds. Self-organized dynamics in spatially structured populations

Self-organization and pattern formation represent the emergence of order in temporal and spatial processes. Self-organization in population ecology is gaining attention due to the recent advances concerning temporal fluctuations in the population size of dispersal-linked subunits. We shall report that spatially structured models of population renewal promote the emergence of a complex power law order in spatial population dynamics. We analyse a variety of population models showing that self-organization can be identified as a temporal match in population dynamics among local units, and how the synchrony changes in time. The irreducible uncertainty of the demography–environment interaction in ecology

The interpretation of ecological data has been greatly improved by bridging the gap between ecological and statistical models. The major challenge is to separate competing hypotheses concerning demography, or other ecological relationships, and environmental variability (noise). In this paper we demonstrate that this may be an arduous, if not impossible, task. It is the lack of adequate ecological theory, rather than statistical sophistication, which leads to this problem.
