Germination and emergence of Neslia paniculata (L.) Desv.

Abstract Seed characteristics, either in size or in structure, can affect germination, hence the emergence of a plant species. In the present work germination and emergence of Neslia paniculata, a Brassicaceae species that produces fruits containing one seed covered by a hard fruit coat, was studied. Germination experiments of seed with and without the fruit coat were performed at constant temperatures from 5 to 23 °C under controlled conditions and germination was measured daily. Gut microbiota play an important role in host health. Yet, the drivers and patterns of microbiota imbalance (dysbiosis) in wild animals remain largely unexplored. One hypothesised outcome of stress on animal microbiomes is a destabilised microbial community that is characterised by an increase in inter-individual differences compared with microbiomes of healthy animals, which are expected to be (a) temporally stable and (b) relatively similar among individuals. Decomposition of nest material in tree holes and nest-boxes occupied by European Starlings Sturnus vulgaris: an experimental study

Numerous bird species depend on the availability of tree cavities, and most non-excavators fill their cavities with considerable amounts of nest material. If not removed, this material can accumulate and render cavities unusable, as recorded in some nest-box studies. Data from earlier studies of tree cavities, however, showed that nest material can decrease mostly due to in situ decomposition, but the relative difference between nest decomposition in tree holes and nest-boxes is still unknown. Evaluation of microbiological and physico‐chemical parameters of retail ready‐to‐eat mono‐varietal salads

An integrated microbiological and physico-chemical approach was applied to evaluate the decay of mono-varietal ready-to-eat escarole (Cichorium endivia var. latifolium) and red chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum Hegi) during refrigeration. Total mesophilic microorganisms, including pseudomonads, and total psychrotrophic microorganisms were detected at high numbers in all samples just after packaging and at the expiry date. The dominant microbial populations analyzed by classical culture-dependent methods belonged to Pseudomonas and yeasts. Infection by Endosymbiotic “Male-Killing” Bacteria in Coleoptera

Wolbachia, Rickettsia, Spiroplasma and Cardinium are endosymbiotic and intracellular bacteria known to cause numerous disorders in host reproduction, reflected in their common name “male-killers”. In this study, 297 beetle species from various taxonomic groups were screened with the use of molecular markers for the presence of infection by any of these endosymbionts. Wolbachia was found to be the most common “male-killer” among beetle hosts as it infected approx. 27% of species. Rickettsia, Spiroplasma and Cardinium were much less prevalent as they infected: 8%, 3% and 2%, respectively, of the studied beetle species. Stipa dickorei sp. nov. (Poaceae), three new records and a checklist of feather grasses of China

Stipa dickorei sp. nov. from the Western Tibetan Plateau (China) is described. The new species is morphologically similar to S. regeliana, but they differ from each other in the length of ligules of vegetative shoots. Stipa dickorei is also similar to S. aliena, however they differ in the shape of panicle, which is contracted with straight branches in S. dickorei, and lax with flexuous branches in S. aliena. Interaction of Oily Water with Floating Porous Ceramic and Immobilized Microorganisms

Oily water was treated with porous ceramic granules and immobilized microorganisms. Floating granules with bulk density of 0.63-0.66 g cm-3were used. The sorption of motor oil was investigated for dry and wetted granules. Respiration experiments showed that microorganisms immobilized on floating ceramic carrier and treated with oily water were influenced by agitation of liquid. The treatment of oily water with low salinity (1-9 g L-1) showed that oil removal efficiency decreased after increasing water salinity. Characterization of Purified Green Bell Pepper Hydroperoxide Lyase Expressed by Yarrowia Lipolytica: Radicals Detection during Catalysis

International audience; The optimization of the expression of recombinant 6-His-tagged HPO lyase in Yarrowia lipolytica is described: 1800U/L of culture was detected at 24h of culture on a medium containing olive oil as the sole carbon source. The enzyme was purified by IMAC and showed an optimal pH at 5.5, an optimal temperature at 20^\circC and a Km value of 9μM with 13-HPOD substrate. The participation of radicals during the catalysis of purified bell pepper fruit hydroperoxide lyase has been observed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and the yet unidentified radical species might be an alkyl or alkoxyl radical linked to the enzyme.
