Alterations of regional cerebral blood flow and oxygen saturation in a rat sinus-vein thrombosis model.

1996

Background and Purpose The pathophysiology of sinus-vein thrombosis (SVT) in patients and experimental animals is still poorly understood. This study was designed to examine and further elucidate the pathophysiological sequence of events, especially the relationship between local and regional blood flow and hemoglobin oxygen saturation (HbSO 2 ) detected at identical locations. The use of both parameters as outcome indicators should be compared. Methods SVT was induced by ligation of the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and slow injection of kaolin-cephalin suspension into the SSS in rats. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was assessed by laser-Doppler flowmetry together with regional HbSO …

Metabolic Status and Reaction to Heat of Normal and Tumor Tissue

1995

The occurrence of differential heating and differential thermal sensitivity between malignant tumors and normal tissues is thought to be due to limited heat dissipation and energy depletion in many solid tumors which in turn results from an inadequately functioning tumor microcirculation (Jain and Ward-Hartley 1984; Song 1984, 1991; Vaupel and Kallinowski 1987; Reinhold 1988; Vaupel et al. 1988a; Vaupel 1990). As a consequence of the latter pathophysiological condition, supply and drainage function are restricted in many solid tumors or, at least, in some tumor areas, thus creating a hostile metabolic microenvironment characterized by tissue hypoxia, acidosis, and energy depletion. Thermal …

Activation of PPARβ/δ inhibits leukocyte recruitment, cell adhesion molecule expression, and chemokine release

2009

Abstract Activation of the nuclear receptor PPARb/d inhibits acute inflammatory responses in vitro with human primary cells and in vivo by targeting the endothelial cell-leukocyte interaction. The infiltration of PMNs into tissues is a prominent feature in inflammation. The mechanism underlying PMN recruitment depends on the release of chemotactic mediators and CAM expression on endothelial cells. The nuclear receptor PPARβ/δ is widely expressed in many tissues, including the vascular endothelium; however, its role in acute inflammation remains unclear. Using intravital microscopy in the mouse cremasteric microcirculation, we have shown that activation of PPARβ/δ by its selective ligand GW5…

Pathophysiology of Solid Tumors

2009

It is generally accepted that tumor blood flow, microcirculation, oxygen and nutrient supply, tissue pH distribution, lactate levels, and the bioenergetic status— factors that are usually closely linked and that define the so-called pathophysiological microenvironment (“tumor pathophysiome”)—can markedly influence the therapeutic response of malignant tumors to conventional irradiation, chemotherapy, other non-surgical treatment modalities, malignant progression, and the cell proliferation activity within tumors. Currently available information on the parameters defining the pathophysiological micromilieu in human tumors is presented in this chapter. According to these data, significant var…

Vascular Microarchitecture of Murine Colitis-Associated Lymphoid Angiogenesis

2009

In permissive tissues, such as the gut and synovium, chronic inflammation can result in the ectopic development of anatomic structures that resemble lymph nodes. These inflammation-induced structures, termed lymphoid neogenesis or tertiary lymphoid organs, may reflect differential stromal responsiveness to the process of lymphoid neogenesis. To investigate the structural reorganization of the microcirculation involved in colonic lymphoid neogenesis, we studied a murine model of dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis. Standard 2-dimensional histology demonstrated both submucosal and intramucosal lymphoid structures in DSS-induced colitis. A spatial frequency analysis of serial histolog…

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy in the treatment of pain and other symptoms in fibromyalgia : a randomized controlled study

2018

Low-energy pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy has been suggested as a promising therapy to increase microcirculation, which is of great concern in patients with fibromyalgia. This study evaluated the effectiveness of PEMF therapy on the treatment of fibromyalgia. A group of 108 women with fibromyalgia were allocated to a 12-week treatment period with an active Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-Regulation (BEMER) device and a similar treatment period with an inactive device. Each patient received active and sham treatments in a random order. Pain and stiffness were assessed on a visual analog scale (VAS, scale 0-100mm), and functional status was assessed by the Fibromyalgia Impact Questio…

Oral microcirculation observed in vivo by videocapillaroscopy: a review

2009

Capillaroscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that is fundamental in viewing peripheral circulation and in studying microangiopathies. The morphological study of microcirculat ion is of fundamental importance, mainly because the microvascular bed is directly involved in the etiopathogenesis of autoimmune disorders and acute and chronic inflammatory pathological conditions. The value of capillaroscopic investigation as a diagnostic means in cases of peripheral microcirculation disorders has been confirmed by numerous studies. Other studies used capillaroscopic investigations to evaluate microcirculation damage not as a complication of disease (diabetes), but as its initial stage, and…

Remote photoplethysmography for assessment of oral mucosa

2019

The present study is devoted to the assessment of oral mucosa perfusion using remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) technique. The alterations of mucosal perfusion were evoked by regional infiltration anesthesia containing adrenaline. Simple rPPG setup comprising white LED light source, video camera and narrowband optical filter (CWL=540nm), are able to detect subtle microcirculation changes in gingiva. Results demonstrate substantial decrease of rPPG waveform amplitude and subsequently perfusion index in affected gingiva region, following administration of anesthetics. The present study emphasizes clinical advantages of remote photoplethysmography and perfusion index mapping as a simple and c…
