Modeling transpiration and leaf temperature of urban trees – A case study evaluating the microclimate model ENVI-met against measurement data

2018

Abstract Increasing vegetation cover in cities is a key approach to mitigating urban heat excess. However, both the effect of vegetation on microclimate and the plants’ vitality need to be assessed to support and quantify the effects of such strategies. One way to assess the interactions between vegetation and the urban environment is through microclimate models that can simulate the effects of vegetation onto the urban microclimate as well as effects of urban environments onto vegetation. To provide reliable estimates microclimate models need to be parameterized based on empirically obtained data. In this paper we compare modeled transpiration rates and leaf temperatures of a leading micro…

ENERGY RETROFIT AND SUSTAINIBILITY. SOCIAL HOUSING ESTATE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE

2013

In the last years the global attention has increasingly been focusing on climate change and on the depletion of non-renewable energy sources. Recent analyses estimate that the building sector, with construction and activities that allow its normal functioning, is responsible for 50% of global CO2 emissions. In contemporary urban areas, post-war housing estates represent a great percentage of the whole building sector and the amount of new housing produced in EU each year is equivalent to 1% of the whole building stock, which indicates the importance of focusing the attention on the recovery of existing buildings and the optimization of their energetic performances. The paper will show the f…

An integrated simulation method for building energy performance assessment in urban environments

2012

a b s t r a c t The microclimate around a building, establishing through the interaction with other buildings or the natural environment, is a significant factor in the building energy consumption. This paper presents a method for the quantitative analysis of building energy performance under any given urban contexts by linking the microclimate model ENVI-met to the building energy simulation (BES) program EnergyPlus. The full microclimatic factors such as solar radiation, long wave radiation, air temperature, air humidity, and wind speed have been considered in the proposed scheme. A case study has been conducted to analyze the effects of different microclimatic factors on the energy balan…

First results of iButton® loggers and infrared camera application inside a greenhouse

2017

Greenhouse microclimate management (temperature, relative humidity) plays a very important role in order to optimize the production process improving pest and disease control, irrigation and energy efficiency. The systems mostly used in Sicily (south Italy) to record the ambient parameters are made up of fixed measuring stations able to give useful information about the climate inside the greenhouse limited to some pre-fixed points. In this study we texted a novel system made up of humidity and temperature data loggers (iButton®) placed inside a greenhouse. The iButton® temperature/humidity logger (DS1923) is a rugged, self-sufficient system that measures temperature and/or humidity and r…

The microbiology of Lascaux Cave.

2010

Lascaux Cave (Montignac, France) contains paintings from the Upper Paleolithic period. Shortly after its discovery in 1940, the cave was seriously disturbed by major destructive interventions. In 1963, the cave was closed due to algal growth on the walls. In 2001, the ceiling, walls and sediments were colonized by the fungus Fusarium solani. Later, black stains, probably of fungal origin, appeared on the walls. Biocide treatments, including quaternary ammonium derivatives, were extensively applied for a few years, and have been in use again since January 2008. The microbial communities in Lascaux Cave were shown to be composed of human-pathogenic bacteria and entomopathogenic fungi, the for…

Evaluating the thermal-radiative performance of ENVI-met model for green infrastructure typologies: Experience from a subtropical climate

2022

Abstract Microclimate knowledge has been intensively integrated into urban planning and design to improve the buildings’ energy performance and outdoor thermal comfort. To assess the climatic mitigation strategies, numerical modeling is gaining higher relevance. ENVI-met, a microclimate model to simulate the complex surface-vegetation-atmosphere interactions in the built environment, is receiving increasing popularity. This study aims to systematically evaluate the thermal-radiative performance of the ENVI-met model based on its recent updates. First, a field measurement was conducted in a subtropical city. Thermal-radiative parameters were collected besides three green infrastructure (GI) …

Evaluation of a microclimate model for predicting the thermal behavior of different ground surfaces

2013

The microclimate model ENVI-met Version 4 was evaluated with field data in terms of the thermal behavior of different types of ground surface. A field experiment was conducted in a real construction project in Guangzhou, South China, from 29 August to 2 September in 2010. The surface types of concrete, tile, asphalt and grass were investigated. The comparison between observation and prediction was performed for both sub- and above-surface variables, including soil temperature at different depths, soil heat flux at the surface, surface temperature, and air temperature and humidity at different heights. The results show that the ENVI-met model is capable of reasonably modelling the diurnal th…

Microclimatic Alteration after Logging Affects the Growth of the Endangered Lichen Lobaria pulmonaria

2022

Microclimatic conditions are important in determining lichen distribution at small scale, and may determine whether the species persist when the surrounding environmental conditions have drastically changed. This is the case with forest management, since a sudden variation of microclimatic conditions (increase of solar radiation, temperature, wind and a reduction of humidity) may occur after logging. In this study, the combined effect of forest logging and microclimatic conditions on the growth probabilities and growth rates of the model species Lobaria pulmonaria was assessed in mixed oak stands. To this purpose, 800 fragments of L. pulmonaria (L. pulmonaria populations in logged forests.

Particularities of Grey Alder (Alnus incana) Stands in Riparian Galleries Along Streams of the Southern Transylvanian Tableland (Romania)

2019

Abstract Grey Alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench.) stands are distributed in the Carpathian area on alluvial deposits with sediments of different grain size as galleries along rivers and streams of the sub-montane to the middle montane level. The geological structure (Tertiary sedimentary deposits) in relation to the hydromorphological processes is the base for the structure of the stream valleys, which are in part very deep. Under the special microclimate of these deeper stream stretches with lower temperatures there are favourable conditions for the development of grey alder stands.

Ecological aspects of plants inhabiting Mediterranean cliffs. Challenges and prospects of life in vertical environments

2021

El primer capítulo, titulado "The complexity of environmental factors: cliff microclimate", investiga…
