Optimal Set Points Regulation of Distributed Generation Units in Micro-grids under Islanded Operation
2010
The present work studies the problem of optimizing the power production levels of dispersed generation units in islanded microgrids. The problem is intrinsically multi-objective with non linear objectives and constraints, thus the solution approach is based on evolutionary optimization and uses the Non dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II. The objectives are calculated based on the solution of the load flow problem. The latter problem is more complicated when in the considered system a physical node with a sufficiently large production capability is not available, because all the generation node of the systems have similar and limited generation capability. In this paper, the issue has be…
Frequency constrained optimal Power Flow based on Glow-worm Swarm Optimization in Islanded Microgrids
2015
This work presents an application of a swarm optimization method to solve the optimal power flow problem taking into account the constraints of frequency and line ampacity in three-phase islanded Microgrids. Each generation unit is equipped with a Power Electronics Interface. In the considered formulation, the droop control parameters are considered as variables to be adjusted by a higher control level, while the frequency is kept in rated bounds. Another typical constraint for OPF formulation, the max ampacity of each line, is also considered. Two case studies with different dimensions and electrical features have been considered and the obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed…
Driven Primary Regulation for Minimum Power Losses Operation in Islanded Microgrids
2018
The paper proposes an improved primary regulation method for inverter-interfaced generating units in islanded microgrids. The considered approach employs an off-line minimum losses optimal power flow (OPF) to devise the primary frequency regulation curve’s set-points while satisfying the power balance, frequency and current constraints. In this way, generators will reach an optimized operating point corresponding to a given and unique power flow distribution presenting the minimum power losses. The proposed approach can be particularly interesting for diesel-based islanded microgrids that face, constantly, the issue of reducing their dependency from fossil fuels and of enhancing their gener…
Optimal Energy Management in Smart-Grid
2017
In this chapter, the problem of energy management in smart-grids is outlined. Optimized energy management is here considered as the operation of energy and power flow control in the aim of attaining minimum cost or minimum power losses while meeting technical constraints. Of course, according to the type of energy system in which such operation is carried out, the meaningful variables and objectives in the problem may largely change. As the extension of the system increases, the influence of the physical behaviour of the electrical power lines takes a more important role. Power electronics takes instead an increasing influence, as the dimension of the power system decreases although Kirchho…
Optimal Power Flow in three-phase islanded microgrids with inverter interfaced units
2015
In this paper, the solution of the Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem for three phase islanded microgrids is studied, the OPF being one of the core functions of the tertiary regulation level for an AC islanded microgrid with a hierarchical control architecture. The study also aims at evaluating the contextual adjustment of the droop parameters used for primary voltage and frequency regulation of inverter interfaced units. The work proposes a mathematical method for the OPF solution also considering the droop parameters as variables. The output of the OPF provides an iso-frequential operating point for all the generation units and a set of droop parameters for primary regulation. In this way, …
A Generalized Framework for Optimal Sizing of Distributed Energy Resources in Micro-Grids Using an Indicator-Based Swarm Approach
2014
In this paper, a generalized double-shell framework for the optimal design of systems managed optimally according to different criteria is developed. Optimal design is traditionally carried out by means of minimum capital and management cost formulations and does not typically consider optimized operation. In this paper, the optimized multiobjective management is explicitly considered into the design formulation. The quality of each design solution is indeed defined by the evaluation of operational costs and capital costs. Besides, the assessment of the operational costs term is deduced by means of the solution of a multiobjective optimization problem. Each design solution is evaluated usin…
A double-shell design approach for multiobjective optimal design of microgrids
2010
This work develops a new double shell approach to optimal design for multi-objective optimally managed systems. The cost of each design solution can be defined by the evaluation of operational issues and capital costs. In most systems, the correct definition of operational issues can be deduced by means of the solution of a multi-objective optimization problem. The evaluation of each design solution must thus be deduced using the outcome of a multi-objective optimization run, namely a Pareto hyper-surface in the n-dimensional space of operational objectives. In the literature, the design problem is usually solved by considering a single objective formulation of the operational issue. In thi…
OPTIMAL POWER FLOW IN ISLANDED MICROGRIDS
In this thesis, studies about OPF in islanded MGs have been carried out. First, an original formulation and solution approach for the OPF problem in islanded distribution systems is proposed. The methodology is well suited for AC microgrids and can be envisioned as a new hierarchical control structure comprising only two levels: primary and tertiary regulation, the latter also providing iso-frequency operating points for all units and optimized droop parameters for primary regulation. The OPF provides a minimum losses operating point for which voltage drops are limited and power sharing is carried out according to the most adequate physical properties of the infrastructure thus giving rise …
Energy Management Systems and tertiary regulation in hierarchical control architectures for islanded microgrids
2015
In this paper, the structure of the highest level of a hierarchical control architecture for micro-grids is proposed. Such structure includes two sub-levels: the Energy Management System, EMS, and the tertiary regulation. The first devoted to energy resources allocation in each time slot based on marginal production costs, the latter aiming at finding the match between production and consumption satisfying the constraints set by the EMS level about the energy production in each time slot. Neglecting the efficiency of the different energy generation systems as well as that of the infrastructure for electrical energy distribution, the problem dealt with by the EMS sub-level is linear and can …
Multi-Objective Optimization of Urban Microgrid Energy Supply According to Economic and Environmental Criteria
2019
This study is focused on the optimization of the annual cost and greenhouse impact related to the supply of natural gas and electricity of an urban microgrid through the installation of components as renewable energy sources, energy storage units and converters. As input parameters of the optimization model, the energy demand of a medium density urban district was estimated, while average costs and emissions of equipment were collected in market reports and literature. The outputs of the model are the optimal size and the schedule of each component. Moreover, optimization analysis was carried out for two different scenarios, comparing Italian and Vietnamese energy system cost and environmen…
