A spatially resolved investigation of the local, micro-magnetic domain structure of single and polycrystalline Co2FeSi
2007
The Heusler compound Co2FeSi is a promising material for magneto-electronic devices. With a Curie temperature of 1100?K and a saturation magnetization of 6?Bohr magnetons and a high spin polarization at the Fermi edge it fulfils the essential requirements for magnetic sensors or spin valve structures. An essential feature for such devices is the micro-magnetic domain structure. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism?photo emission electron microscopy has been used for a direct observation of the domain structure of single- and polycrystalline samples. The polycrystalline material exhibits a micro-magnetic ripple structure, as it is well known for pure Co and other polycrystalline Heusler compoun…
Magnetization states in ultrathin films with laterally modulated anisotropies
1998
Abstract Micromagnetic theory has been applied to a model system for ultrathin films with laterally modulated anisotropies, consisting of a periodic array of stripes with alternating uniaxial anisotropies. Despite of the discontinuous change of anisotropy, the magnetization direction only changes on a lateral scale given by the exchange length. If the width of one of the two alternating stripes is reduced below a critical value, the magnetization will switch into a uniform state. The variation of the critical width with period, anisotropy constants, exchange constant, and film thickness has been determined using an analytic approach. Non-uniform magnetization states and the magnetization re…
Reorientation of magnetization states in Fe-nanostripe arrays on stepped W(110) caused by adsorption of CO, H2 and O2
1999
Abstract Fe-Nanostripe arrays of alternating double layer (DL) and monolayer (ML) stripes were grown on stepped W(1 1 0) surfaces by MBE. Magnetic properties were measured in situ in UHV using the polar and longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) during exposure to CO, H2 and O2. The longitudinal Kerr signal increases and the polar signal decreases with increasing exposure of all three gases. A sudden onset of perpendicular remanence was observed at exposures characteristic for each particular gas.
The chain length of anisotropic paramagnetic particles in a rotating field
2020
In this article, the maximal length of a chain of paramagnetic particles with magnetic anisotropy in a rotating magnetic field is studied. The theory of paramagnetic particle chains usually assumes that the particles are magnetically isotropic and do not rotate in a rotating field. In experiments it is seen that spherical paramagnetic particles rotate, which can be explained by small magnetic anisotropy. In this article, the maximal chain length is calculated for paramagnetic particles with magnetic anisotropy in a rotating magnetic field. Results show that the maximal chain length as a function of field frequency has the same trend for isotropic magnetic particles and particles with magnet…
Local control of domain wall dynamics in ferromagnetic rings
2015
Ferromagnetic nanorings are of great interest due to prospective applications in memory and logic devices based on domain wall (DW) motion.1-3A key-prerequisite for their realization is a reproducible domain wall spin structure with a well-controllable wall velocity. We have found that DW propagation in magnetic ring is characterized by non-constant vortex DW velocity even below Walker breakdown4 (as opposed to straight wires). Several studies have been devoted to the optimization of ring reversal on a global scale using out-of plane field5 or flux charges emanating from neighboring rings if placed in close proximity6. However, these methods involve DW pinning and vortex nucleation processe…
Dynamic domain wall chirality rectification by rotating magnetic fields
2015
We report on the observation of magnetic vortex domain wall chirality reversal in ferromagnetic rings that is controlled by the sense of rotation of a magnetic field. We use time-resolved X-ray microscopy to dynamically image the chirality-switching process and perform micromagnetic simulations to deduce the switching details from time-resolved snapshots. We find experimentally that the switching occurs within less than 4 ns and is observed in all samples with ring widths ranging from 0.5 μm to 2 μm, ring diameters between 2 μm and 5 μm, and a thickness of 30 nm, where a vortex domain wall is present in the magnetic onion state of the ring. From the magnetic contrast in the time-resolved im…
