Among the now eight genetic types of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (NCL), CLN1 to CLN8, CLN2 is considered classic late-infantile NCL. We studied the expression of villin, a microfilament-associated, actin-binding protein typical of brush-border microvilli, in a variety of human carcinomas by applying immunofluorescence microscopy to frozen sections and immunoblotting methods to tissue extracts using a rabbit antiserum and a monoclonal antibody specific for villin. All of the 24 primary and metastatic colorectal adenocarcinomas tested were uniformly and strongly positive for villin, with the immunocytochemical labeling concentrated at the luminal cell margin. Intussusceptive angiogenesis is a morphogenetic process that forms new blood vessels by the division of a single blood vessel into two lumens. Here, we show that this process of intraluminal division participates in the inflammation-induced neovascularization associated with chemically induced murine colitis. In studies of both acute (4-7 days) and chronic (28-31 days) colitis, intravital microscopy of intravascular tracers demonstrated a twofold reduction in blood flow velocity. In the acute colitis model, the decreased velocity was associated with marked dilatation of the mucosal plexus. The classification of human placental villi was reviewed on the basis of material prepared by means of special methods. The material from in situ normal-term placentae was biopsied by aspiration into glutaraldehyde. The classification was made on the basis of light-microscopic observations of semithin sections, reconstructions from serial sections, and scanning-electron micrographs. The peripheral villous tree is roughly divided into stem (ramuli), intermediate and terminal villi. In the present study, the matrix components of 100 cruciate ligaments were analyzed by conventional electron microscopy, immunohistology, morphometry, and immunoelectron microscopy. The anterior (ACL) and the posterior (PCL) cruciate ligaments contained collagen types III, IV, and VI. Several structural glycoproteins, like fibronectin, laminin, entactin, tenascin, and undulin were detected using monoclonal antibodies. Whereas laminin and entactin were higher concentrated in the PCL, type VI collagen was more frequently found in the ACL. The ACL had a critical nourishment in its distal and middle thirds. A number of recent studies have suggested a relationship between Ewing's sarcoma (ES) and other small round cell tumours of childhood such as peripheral neuroepithelioma (PN). We report scanning electron microscopic studies on the character of induced neural differentiation in ES, neuroblastoma, PN, osteosarcoma and colon carcinoma. We found evidence of neural differentiation in both neural lines and in one of two Ewing's lines before treatment. An experimental transplantation model using human fetal skin was applied to approach the question of the embryologic origin of human Merkel cells. Palmar and plantar skin from five fetuses, between 8 and 11 weeks of estimated gestational age (EGA), was xenografted to subcutaneous beds of nude mice. After 4 or 8 weeks of growth, biopsies were taken from these xenografts and examined for the presence of Merkel cells, using immunocytochemistry with antibodies specific for simple epithelial-type cytokeratins and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) as well as using electron microscopy.
