Microscopic studies of surface morphology of high temperature superconductor thick layers

2004

Abstract The surface morphology and structure of the YBa2Cu3O7−δ superconductor ayers prepared on passive ceramic and single crystal substrates is studied by electron microscopy. The layers reveal features of structure formation.

(Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ superconductor composites: Ceramics vs. fibers

1991

Abstract Well characterized (Bi, Pb) 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ superconductor powder has been used to prepare superconductor-glass, -metal and -alloy composites through solid state reaction method. A recently developed Laser Floating Zone (LFZ) apparatus has been used to transform the ceramic precursors into oriented fibers. The diamagnetic properties have been studied by a.c. susceptibility. The microstructure of fibers has been studied by SEM and compared with that of the original ceramic precursors. XRD has been used to study phase composition on representative composite samples and fibers. The results indicate some potential for the 2223-Ag composite, which displays improved diamagnetic p…

Superconducting transition of single-crystal tin microstructures

2001

Single-crystal superconducting microstructures have been fabricated. The resistances of tin whiskers were measured in a multiprobe configuration. Contacts were made of copper, gold, or niobium films using e-beam lithography followed by a lift-off process. Structures with normal metal probes showed unusual behavior: below the critical temperature of bulk tin, the resistance decreases in distinct steps and does not reach zero even when cooled down to 1 K. The origin of these phenomena is not clear but is likely related to a proximity effect.

Ag/(Bi, Pb)-Sr-Ca-Cu-O superconducting tape processing: Solid state chemistry aspects

1993

Abstract Different preparation methods have been used to obtain starting powders used in the fabrication of composite tapes by the powder-in-tube method. The effect of these distinct starting powders on the superconducting properties of Ag/Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O monofilament tapes has been investigated. The changes in the physical properties, including the critical current density at 77 K and ac magnetic susceptibility, and microstructure, using optical and electronic microscopy, have been analyzed in relation to the solid state reactions involved in the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ and Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ phase transformations.

Polymer solution processing of (Bi, Pb)SrCaCuO

1991

Abstract A simple polymer processing route to the 110 K phase (Bi, Pb) 2 Sr 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O 10+δ superconductor has been developed. The influence of the polymer to metal starting ratio, as well as the sintering temperature and time on the quality of the resulting superconducting powders has been studied by XRD, a.c. susceptibility and resistivity measurements. Microstructure of ceramic compacts has been studied by SEM, and qualitatively analysed by EDS for compositional homogeneity. The results indicate that the polymer synthesis route described here may offer a good alternative to the conventional solid state preparation methods towards attaining homogeneous 110 K superconductor powder withi…

Market efficiency and the long-memory of supply and demand: is price impact variable and permanent or fixed and temporary?

2016

In this comment we discuss the problem of reconciling the linear efficiency of price returns with the long-memory of supply and demand. We present new evidence that shows that efficiency is maintained by a liquidity imbalance that co-moves with the imbalance of buyer vs. seller initiated transactions. For example, during a period where there is an excess of buyer initiated transactions, there is also more liquidity for buy orders than sell orders, so that buy orders generate smaller and less frequent price responses than sell orders. At the moment a buy order is placed the transaction sign imbalance tends to dominate, generating a price impact. However, the liquidity imbalance rapidly incre…

Effective elastic properties of biocomposites using 3D computational homogenization and X-ray microcomputed tomography

2021

A 3D computational homogenization method based on X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) was proposed and implemented to investigate how the fiber weight fraction, orthotropy and orientation distribution affect the effective elastic properties of regenerated cellulose fiber-polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites. Three-dimensional microstructures reconstructed by means of the X-ray μCT were used as the representative volume elements (RVEs) and incorporated into the finite element solver within the computational homogenization framework. The present method used Euclidean bipartite matching technique so as to eliminate the generation of artificial periodic boundaries and use the in-situ solution d…

Role of Diffusion in Superplasticity and Brittleness of Fine-Grained Binary Eutectics

2005

Mechanical properties of interphase boundaries (IB), stability of defects and microstructure in heavily deformed binary eutectics (Al-Sn, Zn-Sn, Pb-Sn, Cd-Sn, Bi-Sn) have been investigated at room temperature. Experiments were carried out on atomically clean surfaces of alloys and on bimetallic joints with clean interface. It has been shown that after severe deformation the phases are strengthened and relaxation processes occur mainly on the boundaries in all eutectics. For superplastic eutectics with low interphase boundary energy the intensive development of the diffusion – controlled processes of self- healing, sintering, segregation and enveloping were observed. These diffusion processe…

Multiscale modeling of polycrystalline materials: A boundary element approach to material degradation and fracture

2015

Abstract In this work, a two-scale approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macro-scale) and the material grain level (micro-scale). The macro-continuum is modeled using a three-dimensional boundary element formulation in which the presence of damage is formulated through an initial stress approach to account for the local softening in the neighborhood of points experiencing degradation at the micro-scale. The microscopic degradation is explicitly modeled by associating Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) to relevant points of the macro continuum, for representing the polycrystalline microstruct…
