Inorganic gels as precursors of TiO2 photocatalysts prepared by low temperature microwave or thermal treatment

2008

Abstract A simple procedure for preparing active TiO2 photocatalysts is presented. The starting materials were unusual TiO2 gels formed from TiCl4. The use of microwaves for a very short time enhanced the TiO2 crystallinity preventing an increase of particle size and minimizing the decrease of specific surface area. This result makes this preparation very attractive. The formation of the gels was monitored through measurements of viscosity. All the samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and BET specific surface area measurements. The photoactivity of the samples was evaluated using the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in liquid–solid regi…

EAGLE 2006 - Multi-purpose, multi-angle and multi-sensor in-situ and airborne campaigns over grassland and forest

2009

EAGLE2006 – an intensive field campaign for the advances in land surface hydrometeorological processes – was carried out in the Netherlands from 8th to 18th June 2006, involving 16 institutions with in total 67 people from 16 different countries. In addition to the acquisition of multi-angle and multi-sensor satellite data, several airborne instruments – an optical imaging sensor, an imaging microwave radiometer, and a flux airplane – were deployed and extensive ground measurements were conducted over one grassland site at Cabauw and two forest sites at Loobos and Speulderbos in the central part of the Netherlands. The generated data set is both unique and urgently needed for the developmen…

Surface soil humidity retrieval by means of a semi-empirical coupled SAR model

2010

In the last years, the availability of new technologies of Earth Observation encouraged researches to use integrated approaches for environmental monitoring. Even for agro-hydrological applications, remotely sensed data are available on wide areas allowing the retrieval of cost-effective and representative estimation of high spatial and temporal variability of the soil-vegetation system variables. In particular, soil water content plays an important role determining the partition of precipitation between surface runoff and infiltration and, moreover, influences the distribution of the incoming radiation between latent and sensible heat flux. As a consequence, distributed soil water content …

Dielectric properties of pineapple as function of temperature and water content

2013

Microwave assisted processing is a new and growing field of interest for food industry (Tang et al., 2002; Schubert & Regier, 2005). Many advantages (fast treatments, selective heating and so on) are obtainable by microwave heating due to its peculiar energy transfer that derives from a direct interaction between electromagnetic field and matter (Metaxas & Meredith, 1983). As foods are poor heat conductors, endogenous heat generation allows to overcome some difficulties that characterise conventional heating methods based on convective/conductive heat transfer phenomena (Barba, 2005; Botha et al., 2012). The key-role in design, modelling and management of microwave assisted processes is pla…

A Novel Technique for Deembeding the Unloaded Resonance Frequency from Measurements of Microwave Cavities

2006

[EN] A novel technique to extract the influence of coupling networks on the resonant frequency of cavities in one-port measurements is presented. The determination of the unloaded resonant frequency is performed directly from measurements without either the need to obtain the electromagnetic fields in the resonator or to deembed the delay of transmission lines from the measuring equipment to the resonator. The importance of the Foster's form on the modeling of the frequency detuning of the resonators is also discussed and a criterion for the choice of the appropriate Foster's form is suggested. The procedure is validated with simulations and experimental measurements of manufactured cavities

A new empirical method for extracting unloaded resonant frequencies from microwave resonant cavities

2003

Equivalent circuits traditionally used to model resonators and coupling networks in the vicinity of a resonance provide values of unloaded resonant frequencies which usually do not agree with experimental results. A new empirical method for the extraction of influence of coupling networks on resonant cavities is presented. The characterization of coupling structures is performed directly from measurements without the need of obtaining the electromagnetic fields inside the cavity, which is very interesting from a practical point of view. Results are validated with simulations and experimental measurements. The accuracy of some cavity applications, such as dielectric characterization techniqu…

Nonadiabatic dynamics in strongly driven diffusive Josephson junctions

2019

By measuring the Josephson emission of a diffusive Superconductor-Normal metal-Superconductor (SNS) junction at a finite temperature we reveal a non-trivial sensitivity of the supercurrent to microwave irradiation. We demonstrate that the harmonic content of the current-phase relation is modified due to the energy redistribution of quasiparticles in the normal wire induced by the electromagnetic field. The distortion originates from the phase-dependent out-of-equilibrium distribution function which is strongly affected by the ac-response of the spectral supercurrent. For phases close to $\pi$, transitions accross the Andreev gap are dynamically favored leading to a supercurrent reduction. T…

Cryogenic 35GHz pulse ENDOR probehead accommodating large sample sizes: Performance and applications.

2009

The construction and performance of a cryogenic 35GHz pulse electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) probehead for large samples is presented. The resonator is based on a rectangular TE(102) cavity in which the radio frequency (rf) B(2)-field is generated by a two turn saddle ENDOR coil crossing the resonator along the sample axis with minimal distance to the sample tube. An rf power efficiency factor is used to define the B(2)-field strength per square-root of the transmitted rf power over the frequency range 2-180MHz. The distributions of the microwave B(1)- and E(1)-field, and the rf B(2)-field are investigated by electromagnetic field calculations. All dielectrics, the sample tube, and…

Full-wave analysis of industrial microwave applicators: TM modes

2004

In this paper, full-wave analysis of the TE modes of an industrial cylindrical microwave applicator is presented. The dispersion characteristics and fields configurations are shown. These results are obtained by a numerical simulation based on the residue theory. The authors have obtained particular modes called loop modes, which have a complex propagation constant that describes a loop within the complex plane. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
