Nowe media w służbie terroryzmu : na przykładzie Bliskiego Wschodu
2016
Kolejna część opisuje technologie informacyjne i komunikacyjne same w sobie, zwłaszcza w kontekście prowadzenia konkretnych polityk dotyczących nowych mediów.
Timing of a back-migration into Africa
2007
Indigenous North Africans are genetically quite distinct from sub-Saharan Africans ([1][1]), and this difference is reflected in their lighter skin and European/Middle Eastern physical features. We have previously suggested, on the basis of the distribution of mtDNA type M1, that North Africans are

Pollution patterns in the upper troposphere over Europe and Asia observed by CARIBIC
2014
Abstract Between May 2005 and March 2008 the CARIBIC (Civil Aircraft for the Regular Investigation of the atmosphere Based on an Instrument Container) observatory was deployed to make atmospheric observations on 42 flights between Frankfurt, Germany and Manila, the Philippines. This nearly 3 year flight series provides information about atmospheric composition in the upper troposphere over Europe and Asia during all seasons and was used to investigate seasonal and regional differences in trace gas distributions and the influence of long range transport and local convection on composition. The flight route was separated into three different regions having characteristic differences in transp…

Shedding Light on the Dark Ages: Sketching Potential Trade Relationships in Early Medieval Romania through Mitochondrial DNA Analysis of Sheep Remains
2021
Southeast Europe has played an important role in shaping the genetic diversity of sheep due to its proximity to the Danubian route of transport from the Near East into Europe, as well as its possible role as a post-domestication migration network and long tradition of sheep breeding. The history of Romania and, in particular, the historical province of Dobruja, located on the shore of the Black Sea, has been influenced by its geographical position at the intersection between the great powers of the Near East and mainland Europe, with the Middle Ages being an especially animated time in terms of trade, migration, and conflict. In this study, we analyzed the mitochondrial control region of fi…
Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose and Intertextuality : Eastern Themes
2020
Abstract The Name of the Rose , first novel by Umberto Eco, the Italian novelist and semiotician was published in 1980. The story happens in the Middle Ages (14th century) in an abbey, having a large and wonderful library. This historical detective story is a complicated novel full of intricate signs and symbols. In this paper, some of the themes of The Name of the Rose found in Eastern texts are discussed that indicate intertextuality and the immense amount of knowledge that Eco had of literature. It is stated that the frame tale is very much similar to Kalila va Demna and some of the subplots of the novel have similarities with stories from ancient Iran and the Middle East. Keywords: The …
The Middle Eastern Genus Ocnerosthenus Massa, 1995 (Insecta Orthoptera: Pamphagidae).
2007
The study of types and other specimens coming from the Middle East and original descriptions allowed us to propose the following conclusions. Five species belong to this genus inhabiting montane areas of Lebanon, Syria and Israel, O. verrucosus (Brunner, 1882), O. brunnerianus (Saussure, 1887), O. simulans (Bolivar, 1911), O. kneuckeri (Krauss, 1909) and O. lividipes (Fishelson, 1985). O. brunnerianus is distributed over the North-West of Syria. Distribution of O. simulans covers the mountains of Central-North Lebanon, O. kneuckeri lives on the mountains of Central-South Lebanon and O. lividipes on Mt. Hermon. Type locality of O. verrucosus is Syria and it seems impossible to locate it more…
Islam politico e Guerra fredda: alternative islamiste in Iraq e Libano (1967-1991)
2019
This article seeks to evaluate the impact of Cold War strategies and superpowers initiative in the Middle East with a particular reference on the evolution of political Islam. Based on a storiographical analysis, the article also focuses its attention on two particular cases of the Shia social and political thought (the Lebanese Hezbollah and Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr writings) in order to show how these two particular expressions of the Islamic political thought have been influenced by the Cold War and what was their positioning in this regards. In the first paragraph a particular attention is dedicated to the applicability of Cold War paradigm to the Middle East and in this sense, by using H…
CELEBRATING WOMEN ARTISTS IN JORDAN: REFRAMING GENDER ROLES AS RESISTANCE
This thesis focuses on women artists in the capital of Jordan, Amman, and particularly on their cultural practices as an expression of a creative agency. These women create independent spaces, cultural initiatives, public performances and original artworks that allow the reframing of gender roles in neoliberal patriarchal societies today. Beyond labeling the emergence of a new female activism, or femtivism, as feminist or revolutionary, I suggest reading it as the reconfiguration of a new wave of feminisms in Jordan, which engages with the visual arts, the contemporary cultural scene of Amman, the geography of the city and the political commitment, often in informal domains rather than in i…
