Determinants of European immigration: a cross-country analysis
2006
This paper analyses the determinants of international immigration in 13 European destination countries using a data set on 139 origin countries in 2000. The results indicate that gravity variables (population and distance), the macroeconomic conditions, cultural proximity, and the existence of narrow trade relationships are important explanatory factors.
Re-examining the migration–trade link using province data: An application of the generalized propensity score
2013
Abstract The migration–trade link has been studied extensively since the mid nineties, finding a positive impact through different channels. Based on the generalized propensity score (GPS) methodology, we estimate a dose–response function, depicting a non-linear impact of immigration on exports using province data for Spain and Italy. For both countries the response of province exports to more immigrants from a given nationality is always positive, although varies with the level of immigrants. First we find neither minimum threshold nor exhaustion point in the effectiveness of the immigration networks on province exports. Second we find that the value of the potential bilateral exports reac…
The trade-enhancing effect of immigration networks: New evidence on the role of geographic proximity
2012
Abstract We use migration-trade data from Italian, Portuguese and Spanish provinces to examine the importance of geographic proximity in the effectiveness of ethnic networks on bilateral trade. Empirical findings from the gravity model show that the migration-trade link is clearly in-province: exports from a province to a country do not receive any stimuli from immigrants from this country living outside of the province, once we control for country–province time-invariant fixed effects.
Environmentally driven changes in Baltic salmon oxidative status during marine migration.
2020
The fitness and recruitment of fish stocks can be markedly affected by environmental disturbances including global warming, eutrophication and contamination. Understanding the effects of environmental stressors on salmon physiology during marine residence is of a global concern as marine survival has decreased. We present a unique combination of physiological responses - antioxidant defence and oxidative damage biomarkers, stable isotopes and contaminant exposure biomarkers - measured from adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) collected at the Baltic Sea and studied in relation to environmental variables and fitness estimates. The results demonstrate that feeding populations of salmon display…
Satyra na Augusta Zaleskiego czyli o sporze Wojciecha Wasiutyńskiego z „Syreną” paryską
2017
A SATIRE ON AUGUST ZALESKI, I.E. ON THE CONFLICT BETWEEN WOJCIECH WASIUTYŃŚKI AND THE PARISIAN SYRENA In 1949 the Parisian weekly Syrena published an anonymous satire on President August Zaleski. As it later turned out, it was written by Wojciech Wasiutynski, a well-known journalist and activist of the Stronnictwo Narodowe (National Party). Wasiutynski was not informed about the decision to publish his text and was outraged, demanding compensation. The editorial team explained that the anonymous copies of the satire had circulated among Polish immigrants. The issue echoed a far more significant debate concerning the office of the President of Poland in exile.
Infancia migrante y educación trasnacional en la frontera de México-Estados Unidos
2013
[EN] Child and youth migration, along with that of the general population, is not an isolated matter of modern-day. In this article we wish to reference the matter of child and youth migration and the educational consequences derived from this. In the matter that concerns us we intend to convey a vision of the current reality of the cross-country migration in the Mexico-United States border. Examining the variables we have observed, according to the profile of children and youths that migrate back and forth from one neighboring country to another along with the process of inclusion into or exclusion out of the educational system both in Mexico as well as in their neighboring country, as wel…
Pathways to higher education in France and Switzerland: Do vocational tracks facilitate access to higher education for immigrant students?
2014
In this chapter we wish to clarify through which institutional pathways higher education is accessed by immigrant group students in Switzerland and France. We have chosen these two countries because they differ from each other both in their educational systems and in the ways new routes to higher education have been set up through vocationally orientated programmes. The educational landscape in France is characterised by a more school-based system and has a greater tradition of prestigious tertiary education institutions (Duru-Bellat et al., 2008). Moreover, traditional vocational education and training (VET) does not have very high status and therefore fails to attract a large proportion o…

The electromigration and diffusion of hydrogen in molybdenum
1990
Abstract The electromigration and diffusion of hydrogen atoms in molybdenum were investigated using the resistance method in the temperature range 293–773 K. The following dependence of the diffusion coefficient D and electrical mobility vE on temperature were obtained: D = (5.3 ± 1.53) × 10 −10 exp {− (0.8 ± 0.01) eV kT } { m 2 s −1 } v E = (1.24 ± 0.19) × 10 −8 exp {− (0.9 ± 0.01) eV kT }{ m 2 ( V s ) −1 } . The hydrogen migrates towards the cathode and the effective valency grows with temperature, fulfilling the relation Z eff = (1.42 ± 0.03) − (5.0 ± 0.2) × 10 −8 (Ω m ) ρ ; where ρ is the specific electric resistance.
Investigation of Different Iontophoretic Currents Profiles for Short-Term Applications in Cosmetics.
2018
[EN] This study aimed at investigating the effect of electrical current profile upon the iontophoretic transport of (i) ascorbic acid (AA) and (ii) ellagic acid (EA), into porcine skin in vitro, and the impact of the physicochemical properties of both actives on their mechanism of transport when formulated in cosmetic compositions. The experiments were performed using a proprietary iontophoretic device containing a roller to apply the formulation. Three current profiles were tested: (i) galvanic direct current (DC), (ii) square unipolar pulse current (SPC), and (iii) galvanic direct current (DC) + pulse current (PC). The skin samples were collected at different sampling points, extracted an…
