2014

Motivations and domain specificity in intercultural adaptation : bloggers' experiences in their new host countries

2014

The current qualitative study investigates immigrant’s intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external) motivations and how they surface in the intercultural adaption process. Additionally, it aims to answer whether immigrant’s adaptation orientations differ between private and public (life) domains by testing Boski’s (2008) IAFS model [the model of integration as functional(partial) specialization]. It is a fairly recent model of adaptation and only few prior studies have utilized it. The study concentrates on voluntary migrants, individuals, who have made a personal choice to leave their homelands. In the current study naturally occurring data in a form of weblogs were utilized as research d…

Business Cultural Intelligence Quotient: A Five-Country Study

2016

Cultural intelligence (CI) has often been linked to performance at the individual, team, and firm levels as a key factor in international business success. Using a new measure of CI, the business cultural intelligence quotient (BCIQ), our study provides empirical evidence on several key antecedents of CI using data on business professionals across five diverse countries (Austria, Colombia, Greece, Spain, and the United States). The findings suggest that the most important factors leading to cultural intelligence, in order of importance, are the number of countries that business practitioners have lived in for more than six months, their level of education, and the number of languages spoken…

2008

International mobility by French higher education graduates on entering the labour market: is it worth it once they return home? The construction of European graduate labour market, through increased international graduate mobility, cannot take place without it appearing beneficial forgraduates. Indeed, all types of mobility have a cost, even if the latter is not always financial (leaving family, adapting to a new environment, etc.). Moreover, we can wonder whether graduates employment prospects actually improve thanks to international mobility. Using the Céreq « Génération 98 » survey, our first results show that international mobility on entering the labour market appears to be rare. Final…

Conditions of cultural citizenship: intersections of gender, race and age in public debates on family migration

2015

This article analyses problem framings in public debates on family migration in Finland. The study focuses on the less-examined category of age and how it intersects with gender, race and religion. We examine the discursive context within which parliamentarians and the media negotiate questions of migration policies, belonging and citizenship. Our analysis identifies problem framings by combining frame analysis with the ‘What is the problem represented to be?’ approach, which understands policies as problematizations. We found that the debates held up the rather common notion of vulnerable women and children as groups that tighter family migration policies protect. The debates excluded cert…

Twenty-four eyes of 24 patients with OAG regularly scheduled for NPGS (canaloplasty or deep sclerectomy) were simultaneously implanted with an EYEMATE-SC sensor. Six-month follow-up on the sensor’s safety and performance as well as on the level of agreement between the EYEMATE-SC measurements and IOP measurements with Goldmann applanation tono…

Il mare colore del sangue

2018

In their artwork "Calendoola: SURUS", visual artists Simone Trabucchi and Simone Bertuzzi AKA Invernomuto, in their characteristically visionary language combine sensory experiences and political urgency, offering a reflection on a potentially dystopian society incapable of coming to terms with its own history of colonial, imperial, neocolonial, and global domination. In their 2018 installation at the MAXXI Musuem in Rome, men bleed, turtles lie on their backs, and elephants look on, wise and inexorable. Meanwhile the sea is burning and has turned blood-red. It is the blood of the sons who cross it from opposite sides of the Mediterranean, some succeeding, others succumbing to its abysses. …
