Landscape of Exception as Spatial and Social Interaction Between High-Quality Agricultural Production and Immigrant Labour Exploitation
2021
This Chapter analyses the spatial and social interaction phenomena between high-quality agricultural production and immigrant labour exploita- tion that produce the landscape of exception, a particular declination of the Agambenian (2005) “state of exception” concept. The landscape of exception construction mechanism is generated within South-Eastern Sicily through the productive system of greenhouses, finalised to the vegetables production. Green- houses, in particular, represent an effective tool for spatial manipulation over the landscape and social control of migrant workers. In relation to these considerations, this work reflects on ethical challenges and dilemmas of planning, highligh…
Populism and Immigration: (Re)Inventing Identities Through Language
2022
Populism is one of the hottest topics of the moment and immigration is a fundamental lens for understanding its success, although not the only one. Starting from this assumption, this chapter aims to specify how language can be used as a strategic resource to empower populist platforms. The analysis contributes to the existing analysis by clarifying that language is intrinsically evaluative: the choice of the use of words and the linguistic strategies implemented by any political actor cannot be seen as neutral. Hence, we argue that (radical right) populists do not make a pathological use of language per se. The populist linguistic strategies belong to a physiological dimension, in the sens…
Diel Feeding Features of Juveniles of Two Sparids in the Stagnone di Marsala Coastal Sound (Western Sicily, Italy)
2001
Diet composition, feeding rhythms, gastric evacuation rates, daily rations of Diplodus puntazzo (Gmelin 1789) and Sarpa salpa (Linneo 1758) juveniles were studied in order to investigate their trophic ecology, niche breadth and overlap. These Sparids were collected in the Stagnone di Marsala (Western Sicily), in April 1997, in a 24 hour sampling period. Gastric content of 86 specimens of D. puntazzo (standard length = 31.9 ± 6.6 mm; body wet weight = 1.0 Ī 0.5 g) and of 100 specimens of S. salpa (standard length = 32.3 ± 2.9 mm; body wet weight = 0.6 Ī 0.2 g) were examined. Amphipoda and Tanaidacea were the most frequent prey items in stomach content of D. puntozzo, while Hydrozoa, Bryozoa …
Processes and experiences of Portugal's international recruitment scheme of Colombian physicians: Did it work?
2017
Abstract The Portuguese Ministry of Health performed five international recruitment rounds of Latin American physicians due to the need for physicians in certain geographic areas of the country and in some specialties, as a temporary solution to shortages. Among these recruitments is that of Colombian physicians in 2011 that was the largest of the five groups. This paper presents an evaluation of the international recruitment procedure of Colombian physicians based on the criteria of procedural outcomes and health system outcomes. The methodology used is qualitative, based on semi-structured interviews with key informants and Colombian physicians recruited in Portugal and also on documentar…
Is there a latin american child migration law? An analysis of the ‘Advisory Opinion n. 21 on the rights of child migrants’ rendered by the Inter-Amer…
2019
In 2014, in response to the request of the Southern Cone countries, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights issued an Advisory Opinion on the rights of migrant children in an attempt to emphasize the minimum guarantees that the countries of the region should grant to this category of migrant, especially considering their hypervulnerability when compared to adult migrants. Such request, made in the light of the growing migratory flow of unaccompanied minors in the Americas, has led the Court to point to a number of rights that should be particularly guaranteed, such as the right to seek and receive asylum, non-criminalization, non-detention, and non-return of minors, culminating in the desi…
Dominance of microstructural processes and their effect on microstructural development: insights from numerical modelling of dynamic recrystallization
2002
The influence of the dominance of different processes on the microstructural development of a quarzite has been numerically modelled using the modelling system Elle. In the model dynamic recrystallization of a polycrystalline aggregate has been simulated by a combination of viscous deformation, lattice rotation, subgrain formation, rotation recrystallization, nucleation of new grains and recovery. Different combinations of the dominance of processes are considered by variations in values of the grain boundary mobility and the energy threshold value for recrystallization by nucleation of new grains. In addition, two different starting microstructures (fine and coarse grained) are used. Resul…
Poleward range expansion without a southern contraction in the ground beetle Agonum viridicupreum (Coleoptera, Carabidae)
2011
We investigated the extent of poleward shifts in the distribution range of Agonum viridicupreum due to climate change in the western Palaearctic. Species' records were obtained from extensive literature sources as well as from collections, and consistent amateur entomologists' recordings. Within the general geographic range of the species, we analyzed in detail two parts of both, the northern and southern distribution range boundaries: (1 and 2) north-western Germany (leading or high-latitude edge), (3) Israel and (4) southern Italy (rear or low-latitude edge). Temporal changes in the occurrence data of the species indicated a northward shift of the leading edge of a minimum of 100 km withi…
Balkanskie puti lesninskich monachin'
2012
The immigration of the Lesna Monastery nuns from the west side of Imperial Russia to other Russian Empire territories, to Serbia and to France is part of the Russian emigration history. The stay of the nuns of Lesna in the territory of the actual Republic of Macedonia, in the monastery of St. Bogorodica in Kicevo, is a less known event of the history of their migration.
Short-term occupations at high elevation during the Middle Paleolithic at Kalavan 2 (Republic of Armenia).
2021
The Armenian highlands encompasses rugged and environmentally diverse landscapes and is characterized by a mosaic of distinct ecological niches and large temperature gradients. Strong seasonal fluctuations in resource availability along topographic gradients likely prompted Pleistocene hominin groups to adapt by adjusting their mobility strategies. However, the role that elevated landscapes played in hunter-gatherer settlement systems during the Late Pleistocene (Middle Palaeolithic [MP]) remains poorly understood. At 1640 m above sea level, the MP site of Kalavan 2 (Armenia) is ideally positioned for testing hypotheses involving elevation-dependent seasonal mobility and subsistence strateg…
