Neutrino clustering in the Milky Way and beyond

The standard cosmological model predicts the existence of a Cosmic Neutrino Background, which has not yet been observed directly. Some experiments aiming at its detection are currently under development, despite the tiny kinetic energy of the cosmological relic neutrinos, which makes this task incredibly challenging. Since massive neutrinos are attracted by the gravitational potential of our Galaxy, they can cluster locally. Neutrinos should be more abundant at the Earth position than at an average point in the Universe. This fact may enhance the expected event rate in any future experiment. We present the optical-far-ultraviolet extinction curve of the dust in the lens galaxy of the gravitational lens system SBS 0909+532 (z = 0.83). Extending our previous optical-UV estimate (from λ ~ 2 to 5 μm-1) into the far ultraviolet (from λ ~ 5 to 8 μm-1) is crucial for comparing with the extinction curves measured for Local Group galaxies in the spectral region where the differences are greatest. The SBS 0909+532 curve is similar to that of the LMC2 supershell, with a weaker 2175 A feature and a steeper rise into the UV than that observed in the Milky Way. Future sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to dark matter annihilations from the cosmic diffuse neutrino signal

Cosmological observations and cold dark matter N-body simulations indicate that our Universe is populated by numerous halos, where dark matter particles annihilate, potentially producing Standard Model particles. In this paper we calculate the contribution to the diffuse neutrino background from dark matter annihilations in halos at all redshifts and we estimate the future sensitivity to the annihilation cross section of neutrino telescopes such as IceCube or ANTARES. Discovery of New Companions to High Proper Motion Stars from the VVV Survey

[abridged] The severe crowding in the direction of the inner Milky Way suggests that the census of stars within a few tens of parsecs in that direction may not be complete. We search for new nearby objects companions of known high proper motion (HPM) stars located towards the densest regions of the Southern Milky Way where the background contamination presented a major problem to previous works. The common proper motion (PM) method was used--we inspected the area around 167 known HPM (>=200 mas/yr) stars: 67 in the disk and 100 in the bulge. A deep catalogue of classical Be stars in the direction of the Perseus Arm: spectral types and interstellar reddenings

We present a catalogue of 247 photometrically and spectroscopically confirmed fainter classical Be stars (13 < r < 16) in the direction of the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way (-1 < b < +4, 120 < l < 140). The catalogue consists of 181 IPHAS-selected new classical Be stars, in addition to 66 objects that were studied by Raddi et al. (2013) more closely, and 3 stars identified as classical Be stars in earlier work. This study more than doubles the number known in the region. Photometry spanning 0.6 to 5 micron, spectral types, and interstellar reddenings are given for each object. Search for Supernova Neutrino-Bursts with the AMANDA Detector

The core collapse of a massive star in the Milky Way will produce a neutrino burst, intense enough to be detected by existing underground detectors. The AMANDA neutrino telescope located deep in the South Pole ice can detect MeV neutrinos by a collective rate increase in all photo-multipliers on top of dark noise. The main source of light comes from positrons produced in the CC-reaction of anti-electron neutrinos on free protons $\antinue + p \to e^+ + n$. Determination of outer rotation curve using Galactic masers The rotation curve of the Galaxy is poorly determined outside the solar circle (e.g. Honma & Sofue 1997). The situation makes difficult to derive the dynamical mass of the Galaxy, which is essential for inferring the amount of Galactic dark gravitating matter. A high-frequency survey of the southern Galactic plane for pulsars

Results of an HF survey designed to detect young, distant, and short-period pulsars are presented. The survey detected a total of 100 pulsars, 46 of which were previously unknown. The periods of the newly discovered pulsars range between 47 ms and 2.5 ms. One of the new discoveries, PSR 1259-63, is a member of a long-period binary system. At least three of the pulsars have ages less than 30,000 yr, bringing the total number of such pulsars to 12. The majority of the new discoveries are distant objects with high dispersion measures, which are difficult to detect at low frequencies.
