A note on the separation of subtour elimination constraints in elementary shortest path problems

Abstract This note proposes an alternative procedure for identifying violated subtour elimination constraints (SECs) in branch-and-cut algorithms for elementary shortest path problems. The procedure is also applicable to other routing problems, such as variants of travelling salesman or shortest Hamiltonian path problems, on directed graphs. The proposed procedure is based on computing the strong components of the support graph. The procedure possesses a better worst-case time complexity than the standard way of separating SECs, which uses maximum flow algorithms, and is easier to implement.

Large multiple neighborhood search for the clustered vehicle-routing problem

Abstract The clustered vehicle-routing problem is a variant of the classical capacitated vehicle-routing problem in which customers are partitioned into clusters, and it is assumed that each cluster must have been served completely before the next cluster is served. This decomposes the problem into three subproblems, i.e., the assignment of clusters to routes, the routing inside each cluster, and the sequencing of the clusters in the routes. The second task requires the solution of several Hamiltonian path problems, one for each possibility to route through the cluster. Solution to nonlinear MHDS arising from optimal growth problems

Abstract In this paper we propose a method for solving in closed form a general class of nonlinear modified Hamiltonian dynamic systems (MHDS). This method is used to analyze the intertemporal optimization problem from endogenous growth theory, especially the cases with two controls and one state variable. We use the exact solutions to study both uniqueness and indeterminacy of the optimal path when the dynamic system has not a well-defined isolated steady state. With this approach we avoid the linearization process, as well as the reduction of dimension technique usually applied when the dynamic system offers a continuum of steady states or no steady state at all.

Integral binary Hamiltonian forms and their waterworlds

We give a graphical theory of integral indefinite binary Hamiltonian forms $f$ analogous to the one by Conway for binary quadratic forms and the one of Bestvina-Savin for binary Hermitian forms. Given a maximal order $\mathcal O$ in a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$, we define the waterworld of $f$, analogous to Conway's river and Bestvina-Savin's ocean, and use it to give a combinatorial description of the values of $f$ on $\mathcal O\times\mathcal O$. Finite-temperature geometric properties of the Kitaev honeycomb model

We study finite temperature topological phase transitions of the Kitaev's spin honeycomb model in the vortex-free sector with the use of the recently introduced mean Uhlmann curvature. We employ an appropriate Fermionisation procedure to study the system as a two-band p-wave superconductor described by a BdG Hamiltonian. This allows to study relevant quantities such as Berry and mean Uhlmann curvatures in a simple setting. More specifically, we consider the spin honeycomb in the presence of an external magnetic field breaking time reversal symmetry. Anti-plant Defense Response Strategies Mediated by the Secondary Symbiont

Bacterial symbionts are omnipresent in insects, particularly aphids, and often exert important effects on the host ecology; however, examples of symbionts that mediate herbivore-plant interactions remain limited. Here, three clones with identical genetic backgrounds were established: a Hamiltonella defensa-free clone, H. defensa-infected clone and H. defensa-cured clone. H. defensa infection was found to increase the fitness of Sitobion miscanthi by increasing the total number of offspring and decreasing the age of first reproduction. This is a version, slightly corrected in 2010 with regard to form, of a working paper produced in 1968. Its subject is the problem of the realism of assumptions in economics. It offers an interpretation of Milton Friedman's famous essay of 1953 in which, contrary to most discussions, Friedman's solution to the problem does make sense. Under that interpretation, Friedman does not assert that one should test the consequences of a theory but not its assumptions, that one can predict but not explain, or that individuals behave as if they were rational and firms as if they maximized profits. Hyperpolarization has found many applications in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). However, its usage is still limited to the observation of relatively fast processes because of its short lifetimes. This issue can be circumvented by storing the hyperpolarization in a slowly relaxing singlet state. Symmetrical molecules hyperpolarized by Parahydrogen Induced Hyperpolarization (PHIP) provide a straightforward access to hyperpolarized singlet states because the initial parahydrogen singlet state is preserved at almost any magnetic field strength. Side-stepping secondary symbionts: widespread horizontal transfer across and beyond the Aphidoidea.

To elucidate the co-evolutionary relationships between phloem-feeding insects and their secondary, or facultative, bacterial symbionts, we explore the distributions of three such microbes--provisionally named the R-type (or PASS, or S-sym), T-type (or PABS), and U-type--across a number of aphid and psyllid hosts through the use of diagnostic molecular screening techniques and DNA sequencing.
