In-situ characterisation of organosilane films formation on aluminium alloys by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance and in-situ ellipsometry
2005
Abstract Organosilane pre-treatments have been studied intensively during the last years in order to replace hexavalent chromium conversion treatments. The aim of this study is to follow in-situ the formation of this organosilane layer in solution. Two in-situ techniques, spectroscopic ellipsometry and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance, were used to investigate the mechanism and the kinetics of this protective film formation. In-situ measurements highlight that the organosilane film observed after the drying process is not formed into the solution, but during the emersion and drying step. Hence, it has been possible to characterise the presence of a very thin organosilane layer in…
The determination of mineral acidity excess in solutions containing Ga(III), Al(III), Bi(III)
2002
Abstract A new procedure is proposed to carry out volumetric determinations of the strong acid content of a solution in the presence of inorganic cations such as Ga 3+ , Al 3+ , Bi 3+ which, showing in aqueous solution an acidic behaviour, introduce non negligible interferences in these determinations. Before the acid–base titration, an equivalent amount of a ligand, such as dihydrogen ethylendiamino tetraacetate is added, in order to strongly complex the cation masking it toward the successive addition of a strong base. Interferences are thus removed, and the volumetric determination of the strong acid excess plus the hydrogen ions set free from the ligand, as a consequence of the complex …
Crystallization of the CaCO3 mineral in the presence of the protein ovalbumin
2004
Abstract The kinetics of CaCO3 mineralization was studied by SANS in a 0.1 M aqueous CaCl2 solution in the presence of the protein ovalbumin found in chicken eggs. As the scattering from the protein and the mineral was observed within different Q regimes the evolution of the protein and mineral could be followed independently. It is observed that ovalbumin denaturates during the first 3 h and leads to a strong enhancement of mineralization.
Primary Cell Culture of Fresh Water Hyriopsis cumingii Mantle/Pearl Sac Tissues and Its Effect on Calcium Carbonate Mineralization
2014
Primary cell cultures of the fresh water Hyriopsis cumingii mantle and pearl sac tissues were produced in this study, and the influence of the tissue, cells, and secreted protein on calcium carbonate crystal nucleation and growth was studied. The study contributes to a further understanding of the influence of organic matrices on CaCO3 crystal formation. This research started from the protein level to the tissue/cell level, which is crucial for understanding the inorganic deposition process. The new data also add relevant theoretical approaches to an overall understanding of biomineralization processes. In the experimental groups with mantle or pearl sac tissue, the growth patterns of arago…
Micro-Raman spectroscopy of pigments contained in different calcium carbonate polymorphs from freshwater cultured pearls
2008
The metastable calcium carbonate polymorph vaterite has recently been found to occur commonly in freshwater cultured pearls from Japan and China. Organic pigment molecules in these vaterite regions of freshwater cultured pearls were analysed by resonance and near-resonance micro-Raman spectroscopy, in single spectra and in mapping modes and are compared with their aragonitic counterparts. Four different excitation wavelengths (487.9, 514.5, 532.2 and 632.8 nm) were used, resulting in differential increase of resolution for the pigments. Although vaterite areas were always lightly coloured (light yellow, light brown or white), ten different pigments were identified and a single colour is for…
"Role of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Nutrient Uptake and Growth of Durum Wheat"
Soil microbiome is involved at different levels in the food web, in bio-geochemical nutrient cycles and in several interactions with plants. Based on its key role in the agro-ecosystem processes, the soil microbiome has been identified as one of the principal factors in an agriculture addressed to the ecological intensification. Among the several relationships established between plants and soil microorganisms, arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is the most widespread. Two out of three of all plant taxa (among others the main crops) are involved in the AM symbiosis which takes place between the plant root system and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), a monophyletic group of fungi belong…
Archaeometric characterization of late Archaic ceramic from Erice (Sicily) aimed to provenance determination
2019
A set of 20 ceramic samples was autoptically selected from the numerous findings recovered from the stratigraphic excavations of the late Archaic city walls of Erice (western Sicily), in order to be analyzed with archaeometric techniques for provenance determination. The excavations were recently carried out as part of a research project funded by the Freie Universiat Berlin and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation. Specifically, the ceramic material consists of tableware with a painted geometric decoration of presumed local/regional production, as well as apparently imported black-glazed pottery. Both the categories can be traced back to a chronological period between the second half/last quarter …
Palermo. Uno scavo d’emergenza nell’area di Piazza Marina

Entella. Manufatti in pietra tenera di epoca medievale. Primi risultati da un approccio multidisciplinare
2016
Selinunte (Sicily) and its productive context: the clayey raw materials applied in a long-lived ceramic production (seventh to third century BCE)
2016
The westernmost of the Greek-Sicilian towns, Selinunte, founded in western Sicily during the second half of the seventh century BCE, gives amazing evidences of a historic activity of ceramic production (seventh to third century BCE). The present study aims to identify the raw materials available in the vicinity of the archaeological site of Selinunte, which were possibly used by the ancient potters, and to characterise them by means of petrographic and chemical techniques. A sampling campaign of clays and sands for tempering was undertaken in the archaeological site and the adjacent area. Moreover, locally produced archaeological bricks and tiles were considered helpful for comparison regar…
