Brain iron deposition after Ferumoxytol-enhanced MRI: A study of Porcine Brains
2020
Recent evidence of gadolinium deposition in the brain has raised safety concerns. Iron oxide nanoparticles are re-emerging as promising alternative MR contrast agents, because the iron core can be metabolized. However, long-term follow up studies of the brain after intravenous iron oxide administration have not been reported thus far. In this study, we investigated, if intravenously administered ferumoxytol nanoparticles are deposited in porcine brains. Methods: In an animal care and use committee-approved prospective case-control study, ten Gottingen minipigs received either intravenous ferumoxytol injections at a dose of 5 mg Fe/kg (n=4) or remained untreated (n=6). Nine to twelve months …
Phosphodiesterase inhibition induces retinal degeneration, oxidative stress and inflammation in cone-enriched cultures of porcine retina.
2013
nherited retinal degenerations affecting both rod and cone photoreceptors constitute one of the causes 74 of incurable blindness in the developed world. Cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) is crucial in the 75 phototransduction and, mutations in genes related to its metabolism are responsible for different retinal 76 dystrophies. cGMP-degrading phosphodiesterase 6 (PDE6) mutations cause around 4e5% of the retinitis 77 pigmentosa, a rare form of retinal degeneration. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether phar- 78 macological PDE6 inhibition induced retinal degeneration in cone-enriched cultures of porcine retina 79 similar to that found in murine models. PDE6 inhibition was induced…
Il Breviario di Simone Beccadelli della Cattedrale di Palermo (1453). Stagione 2: de Lignamine e Riggio
2022
(XV-XVII sec.) An illuminated Breviarium by several hands variously recognized is referred to Archbishop Beccadelli. The work reconstructs, by identifying two post-package coats of arms not belonging to the patron (1. embossed on the concave cut, 2. c. VIv), as many unpublished hand transitions of the ms. (15th-17th cent.)
Approssimazioni a una "filologia per immagini". Ipotesi di lavoro per il Dit dou Lyon di Guillaume de Machaut
2021
Among the dits of Guillaume de Machaut consecrated to animal figures, the Dit dou lyon deserves a new ecdotic and critical study. It is a narrative work dating back to 1342, consisting of more than two thousand octosyllabes and transmitted by eleven manuscripts (14th-15th centuries), which contain Machaut’s works and almost all accompanied by a rich iconographic apparatus. Indeed, the two manuscripts that do not keep miniatures are however prepared to receive them, as proof of the importance of the iconographic element in the process of making manuscripts containing the works of Guillaume de Machaut, then to their reception and “monumentalization”. This article reflects on the nature of the…
El «llibre cortés de lectura» en català: a propòsit del manuscrit F-129 del Col·legi de la Sapiència de Palma
2006
The manuscript F-129 of the Col·legi de la Sapiència de Palma contains three works of Ramon Llull. It is made up of two separate manuscripts belonging to the first generation of Lullian codices (that is, not later than the first quarter of the fourteenth century). This collection is preceded by a remarkable full-page illustration, an analysis of which shows that it was probably based on a similar miniature from a French codex emanating from Llull’s immediate circle. The codicological model applicable to this manuscrit is that of «libro cortese di lettura».
A small-bowel segment as a total extrahepatic bile duct replacement.
1992
• The effect of a small-bowel segment as a total extrahepatic bile duct replacement, with preservation of the bile passage through the papilla of Vater, was examined in 12 pigs followed up for 420 days. No complications during or after surgery were observed in any of the animals. The laboratory parameters were within normal range during the entire observation period. No anastomotic stenosis was evident on percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography in animals examined 2, 6, or 12 months after surgery. The intrahepatic biliary tract was not dilated. There was obvious peristalsis of the grafted small-bowel toward the papilla of Vater. Autopsies showed that the grafts had healed without any sign…
Exploring gastric emptying rate in minipigs: Effect of food type and pre-dosing of metoclopramide.
2018
The present study investigated the gastric emptying rate in Gottingen minipigs pre- and post-prandial and evaluated the effect of metoclopramide on the same parameter, using paracetamol as an absorption marker. The pharmacokinetic evaluation of the obtained plasma concentration data for paracetamol demonstrated that the fastest gastric emptying rate was observed in the animals that were allowed access to normal pig food. There was no significant difference in the stomach emptying rate observed between fasted and fed minipigs, when fed either with a FDA standard breakfast or a nutritional energy drink. Pre-dosing minipigs with metoclopramide (0.2 or 0.4 mg/kg) did not demonstrate any effect …
Comparing Aachen Minipigs and Pietrain Piglets as Models of Experimental Pediatric Urology to Human Reference Data
2020
Introduction: Swine had special roles in the development of minimally invasive procedures to treat vesicoureteral reflux, and minipigs have been gaining ground in recent years in experimental pediatric urology as they combine small size with less vulnerable adult physiology, but their suitability as a model has never been assessed. We therefore compared a landrace piglet with a juvenile minipig to elucidate comparability. Methods: We evaluated five 3-week old Pietrain piglets and five 3-month old Aachen Minipigs as representatives of landrace and minipig models based on their expected bodyweight being similar to a n…
The acute myotoxic effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine after continuous peripheral nerve blockades.
2003
Bupivacaine causes muscle damage. However, the myotoxic potency of ropivacaine is still unexplored. Therefore, we performed this study to compare the effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine on skeletal muscle tissue in equipotent concentrations. Femoral nerve catheters were inserted into anesthetized minipigs, and 20 mL of either bupivacaine (5 mg/mL) or ropivacaine (7.5 mg/mL) was injected. Subsequently, bupivacaine (2.5 mg/mL) and ropivacaine (3.75 mg/mL) were continuously infused over 6 h. Control animals were treated with corresponding volumes of normal saline. Finally, muscle samples were dissected at injection sites. After processing and staining, histological patterns of muscle damage…
