Electric Control of Dirac Quasiparticles by Spin-Orbit Torque in an Antiferromagnet

2016

Spin-orbitronics and Dirac quasiparticles are two fields of condensed matter physics initiated independently about a decade ago. Here we predict that Dirac quasiparticles can be controlled by the spin-orbit torque reorientation of the N\'{e}el vector in an antiferromagnet. Using CuMnAs as an example, we formulate symmetry criteria allowing for the co-existence of Dirac quasiparticles and N\'{e}el spin-orbit torques. We identify the non-symmorphic crystal symmetry protection of Dirac band crossings whose on and off switching is mediated by the N\'{e}el vector reorientation. We predict that this concept, verified by minimal model and density functional calculations in the CuMnAs semimetal ant…

Dynamics of Binary Active Clusters Driven by Ion-Exchange Particles

2018

We present a framework to quantitatively predict the linear and rotational directed motion of synthetic modular microswimmers. To this end, we study binary dimers and characterize their approach motion as effective interactions within a minimal model. We apply this framework to the assembly of small aggregates composed of a cationic ion-exchange particle with up to five passive particles or anionic ion-exchange particles at dilute conditions. Particles sediment and move close to a substrate, above which the ion-exchange particles generate flow. This flow mediates long-range attractions leading to a slow collapse during which long-lived clusters of a few particles assemble. The effective int…

WMAPing the Universe: Supersymmetry, Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Proton Decay and Collider Physics

2003

In this review we discuss constraints on minimal supersymmetric models of particle physics implied by the recent astrophysical observations of WMAP. Although the prospects of detecting supersymmetry increase and 90 percent of the available MSSM parameter space can safely be reached by the sensitivity of future colliders, nevertheless we pay particular emphasis on discussing regions of the appropriate phase diagrams, which -if realized - would imply that detection of supersymmetry, at least in the context of minimal models, could be out of colliders reach. We also discuss the importance of a precise determination of the radiative corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, both theore…

Time-resolved photoabsorption in finite systems: A first-principles NEGF approach

2016

We describe a first-principles NonEquilibrium Green’s Function (NEGF) approach to time-resolved photoabsortion spectroscopy in atomic and nanoscale systems. The method is used to highlight a recently discovered dynamical correlation effect in the spectrum of a Krypton gas subject to a strong ionizing pump pulse. We propose a minimal model that captures the effect, and study the performance of time-local approximations versus time-nonlocal ones. In particular we implement the time-local Hartree-Fock and Markovian second Born (2B) approximation as well as the exact adiabatic approximation within the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory framework. For the time-nonlocal approximation we ins…

Observation of a unitary cusp in the thresholdγp→π0preaction

1997

A rigorous multipole analysis of the recent $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ cross-section measurement is presented. The data were taken using the photon spectrometer TAPS at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz microtron. The $s$ and $p$ wave multipoles were extracted using minimal model assumptions. The predicted unitary cusp for the $s$-wave multipole ${E}_{0+}$ due to the two step $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}n\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ reaction was observed. The results are consistent with one-loop chiral perturbation theory calculations for which three low-energy constants have been determi…

The minimal 3+2 neutrino model versus oscillation anomalies

2012

We study the constraints imposed by neutrino oscillation experiments on the minimal extension of the Standard Model that can explain neutrino masses, which requires the addition of just two singlet Weyl fermions. The most general renormalizable couplings of this model imply generically four massive neutrino mass eigenstates while one remains massless: it is therefore a minimal 3+2 model. The possibility to account for the confirmed solar, atmospheric and long-baseline oscillations, together with the LSND/MiniBooNE and reactor anomalies is addressed. We find that the minimal model can fit oscillation data including the anomalies better than the standard $3\nu$ model and similarly to the 3+2 …

Minimal 3-loop neutrino mass models and charged lepton flavor violation

2020

We study charged lepton flavor violation for the three most popular 3-loop Majorana neutrino mass models. We call these models "minimal" since their particle content correspond to the minimal sets for which genuine 3-loop models can be constructed. In all the three minimal models the neutrino mass matrix is proportional to some powers of Standard Model lepton masses, providing additional suppression factors on top of the expected loop suppression. To correctly explain neutrino masses, therefore large Yukawa couplings are needed in these models. We calculate charged lepton flavor violating observables and find that the three minimal models survive the current constraints only in very narrow …

CPT Violating Decoherence and LSND: a possible window to Planck scale Physics

2004

Decoherence has the potential to explain all existing neutrino data including LSND results, without enlarging the neutrino sector. This particular form of CPT violation can preserve the equality of masses and mixing angles between particle and antiparticle sectors, and still provide seizable differences in the oscillation patterns. A simplified minimal model of decoherence is sufficient to explain the existing neutrino data quite neatly, while making dramatic predictions for the upcoming experiments. Some comments on the order of the decoherence parameters in connection with theoretically expected values from some models of quantum-gravity are given. In particular, the quantum gravity decoh…

Cornering Colored Coannihilation

2018

In thermal dark matter models, allowing the dark matter candidate to coannihilate with another particle can considerably loosen the relic density constraints on the dark matter mass. In particular, introducing a single strongly interacting coannihilation partner in a dark matter model can bring the upper bound on the dark sector energy scale from a few TeV up to about 10 TeV. While these energies are outside the LHC reach, a large part of the parameter space for such coannihilating models can be explored by future hadron colliders. In this context, it is essential to determine whether the current bounds on dark matter simplified models also hold in non-minimal scenarios. In this paper, we s…

The self-couplings of vector bosons: does LEP-1 obviate LEP-2?

1992

Abstract Theories beyond the standard model (“meta-theories”) are severely constrained by the current body of data and must necessarily respect the standard gauge symmetry. We analyze the constraints on two generic types of meta-theory, in which fundamental scalar do or do not exist. The novel low-energy effects can be comprehensively described by grafting onto the standard lagrangian new operators that - in the sense of a Taylor expansion - form a complete set. Completeness calls for consideration of previously discarded operators, and for a thorough exploitation of the equations of motion. We illustrate the current strictures by focusing on the allowed range of departures from the most cr…
