Outdoor, but not indoor, nitrogen dioxide exposure is associated with persistent cough during the first year of life
2011
Background and aims: Because their lungs and immune system are not completely developed, children are more susceptible to respiratory disease and more vulnerable to ambient pollution. We assessed the relation between prenatal and postnatal nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels and the development of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI), wheezing and persistent cough during the first year of life. Methods: The study population consisted of 352 children from a birth cohort in Valencia, Spain. Prenatal exposure to NO2, a marker of traffic related air pollution was measured at 93 sampling sites spread over the study area during four different sampling periods of 7 days each. It was modeled for eac…
Prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and fetal growth in a cohort of pregnant women
2012
Objectives Scant evidence is available on effects of air pollution on longitudinally measured fetal biometry, and thus it remains unclear as to whether there are critical windows of exposure or specificity of effects. Our objective was to examine the association between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) during pregnancy and fetal and neonatal anthropometry in a cohort of Spanish women. Methods Temporally adjusted land-use regression was used to estimate exposure to NO2 at home addresses. Biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) were evaluated in each trimester by ultrasound. As neonatal outcomes, weight, length and head cir…

Coseismic geochemical variations in some gas emissions of Umbria region (Central Italy)
2000
Abstract Coseismic geochemical variations have been detected in some gaseous vents and natural springs during the last seismic crisis occurred in Umbria region (Central Apennines), that started on September 26th, 1997 with several moderate earthquakes (up to M1 5.8). The results of chemical analyses performed on both gas and water samples taken at a weekly rate, combined with analyses on continuous gas flow rate nearby San Faustino site, suggest that the variations can be interpreted as possible consequence of the crustal permeability changes induced by earthquake shaking.

Long-term pulse profile study of the Be/X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545
2007
Aims. We present the first long-term pulse profile study of the X-ray pulsar SAX J2103.5+4545. Our main goal is to study the pulse shape correlation either with luminosity, time or energy. Methods. This Be/X-ray binary system was observed from 1999 to 2004 by RXTE PCA, and by INTEGRAL from 2002 to 2005, during the Performance and Verification (PV) phase and the Galactic Plane Scan survey (GPS). X-ray pulse profiles were obtained in different energy ranges. The long-term spectral variability of this source is studied. The long-term flux, frequency and spin-up rate histories are computed. A new set of orbital parameters are also determined. Results. The pulse shape is complex and highly varia…
The DArk Matter Particle Explorer mission
2017
The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), one of the four scientific space science missions within the framework of the Strategic Pioneer Program on Space Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a general purpose high energy cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observatory, which was successfully launched on December 17th, 2015 from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The DAMPE scientific objectives include the study of galactic cosmic rays up to $\sim 10$ TeV and hundreds of TeV for electrons/gammas and nuclei respectively, and the search for dark matter signatures in their spectra. In this paper we illustrate the layout of the DAMPE instrument, and discuss the results of beam tests and calib…
The mirror module design for the cryogenic x-ray imaging spectrometer on-board ORIGIN
2011
ORIGIN is a medium size high-energy mission concept submitted to ESA in response to the Cosmic Vision call issued on July 2010. The mission will investigate the evolution of the Universe by performing soft X-ray high resolution spectroscopic measurements of metals formed in different astrophysical environments, from the first population III stars at z > 7 to the present large scale structures. The main instrument on-board ORIGIN will be a large format array of TES X-ray micro-calorimeters covering a FOV of 30' at the focal plane of a grazing incidence optical module with a focal length of 2.5 m and an angular resolution of 30'' HEW at 1 keV. We present the optical module design which is bas…
Background radiation effects and hazards in planetary instrumentation
2006
Recent and proposed future planetary missions are becoming increasingly concerned with detailed geochemical assessment, often in a bid to ascertain the presence of water and life supporting geochemical systems. The instruments involved may use some kind of radioactive source, e.g. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Mossbauer spectrometry, neutron scattering. Having radioactive sources on a lander/rover poses various potential problems, in regard to both safety to personnel involved in the building of the instrument and to radiation effects on spacecraft structure and on other instruments. Indeed background radiation effects from one instrument may dominate measurements in another resulting in…
