Residential Exposure to Outdoor Air Pollution during Pregnancy and Anthropometric Measures at Birth in a Multicenter Cohort in Spain
2011
Background: A growing body of research suggests that prenatal exposure to air pollution may be harmful to fetal development. We assessed the association between exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and anthropometric measures at birth in four areas within the Spanish Children’s Health and Environment (INMA) mother and child cohort study. Methods: Exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and benzene was estimated for the residence of each woman (n = 2,337) for each trimester and for the entire pregnancy. Outcomes included birth weight, length, and head circumference. The association between residential outdoor air pollution exposure and birth outcomes was assessed with linear regress…
Isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometry in connection with a chromatographic separation for ultra trace determinatio…
2000
An isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma quadrupole mass spectrometric (ID-ICP-QMS) method was developed for the simultaneous determination of the platinum group elements Pt, Pd, Ru, and Ir in environmental samples. Spike solutions, enriched with the isotopes 194Pt, 108Pd, 99Ru, and 191Ir, were used for the isotope dilution step. Interfering elements were eliminated by chromatographic separation using an anion-exchange resin. Samples were dissolved with aqua regia in a high pressure asher. Additional dissolution of possible silicate portions by hydrofluoric acid was usually not necessary. Detection limits of 0.15 ng x g(-1), 0.075 ng x g(-1), and 0.015 ng x g(-1) were achieved for Pt,…

Managing Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Airport Inventories: An Overview
2011
For some years now, problems relating to gas emissions that affect climate and result from human activities have assumed a global dimension of large importance. The climate is, indeed, influenced by the concentrations of some pollutants in the atmosphere; these pollutants trap the long wave radiation emitted by the Earth and alter the energy balance, causing an accentuation of the natural greenhouse effect. In this view an inventory of greenhouse gases can become the benchmark against which to measure the achievement of quantitative targets set at the political level in the fight against climate change. Contrary to a general inventory of emissions related with air quality objectives and loc…
Identification of magnetic particulates in road dust accumulated on roadside snow using magnetic, geochemical and micro-morphological analyses
2010
The aim of this study is to test the applicability of snow surveying in the collection and detailed characterization of vehicle-derived magnetic particles. Road dust extracted from snow, collected near a busy urban highway and a low traffic road in a rural environment (southern Finland), was studied using magnetic, geochemical and micro-morphological analyses. Significant differences in horizontal distribution of mass specific magnetic susceptibility (χ) were noticed for both roads. Multi-domain (MD) magnetite was identified as the primary magnetic mineral. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses of road dust from both roads revealed: (1) angular-shaped particles (diameter ∼1–300 μm) mo…
Environmental Performance Evaluation at Urban Roundabouts
2021
Transformation toward greener, healthier and safer management of urban mobility demand is needed soon. Smart tools are available to assess the impact of new infrastructural projects and road facilities also from an environmental point of view. In this pilot study pollutant emissions at a sample of urban roundabouts were estimated employing the Vehicle Specific Power methodology which needs second-by-second speed profiles both gathered in the field and simulated in AIMSUN. The versatility of the micro-simulation model for a calibration aimed at improving accuracy of the emissions estimates was tested in order to ensure that second-by-second trajectories experienced in the field properly refl…
Environmental Performance Assessment of Urban Roundabouts
2021
To meet continuous and sustainable improvement on road infrastrucutures, new technologies and smart devices are encouraging the development of a mobile crowdsensing system for collecting and monitoring data to be used in efficiency assessment. In this view, the paper proposes a methodological approach that employs in an integrated way vehicle trajectory data collected in the field, the Vehicle Specific Power methodology and a microscopic traffic simulation model for estimating emissions at urban roundabouts. For a first characterization of the emissive phenomenon reference was made to an existing two-lane roundabout in Palermo, Italy, where vehicle trajectory data were collected using a sma…
Direct measurement of NO3 radical reactivity in a boreal forest
2018
We present the first direct measurements of NO3 reactivity (or inverse lifetime, s−1) in the Finnish boreal forest. The data were obtained during the IBAIRN campaign (Influence of Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions on the Reactive Nitrogen budget) which took place in Hyytiälä, Finland during the summer/autumn transition in September 2016. The NO3 reactivity was generally very high with a maximum value of 0.94 s−1 and displayed a strong diel variation with a campaign-averaged nighttime mean value of 0.11 s−1 compared to a daytime value of 0.04 s−1. The highest nighttime NO3 reactivity was accompanied by major depletion of canopy level ozone and was associated with strong temperature inversion…
The influence of automobile exhausts on mutagenicity of soils: contamination with, fractionation, separation, and preliminary identification of mutag…
2000
To test the assumption that automobile exhausts contribute to soil mutagenicity, two soils with low levels of mutagenic activities were exposed to traffic exhausts at a heavily charged junction of German motorways (Autobahnen) for 3, 7, 10, 13, 17, 21, and 26 weeks. Indeed, in the presence of a metabolic activation system from rat liver (S9), an average increase of 8 and 9 (4 and 12) revertants per gram per week was found in Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 (TA 100). In the absence of S9, meaningful measurements were impossible on account of a concurrent dose dependent increase of toxicity. No correlation between the increase of mutagenicity and the contents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons …
Universal newborn hearing screening in the Italian Region of Sicily in 2018
2021
We have clarified the role of Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening (UNHS) for both early diagnosis and rapid treatment in order to improve the prognosis of the deaf child and reduce patient management costs. Although in Sicily UNHS has been progressively implemented, there is scarce data in the literature on this matter. Therefore, the main objective was to collect in the year 2018 the following data: number of newborns screened for hearing loss, number of infants "referred" to transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE), number of infants with pathologic auditory brainstem response (ABR) and number of infants affected by permanent hearing loss.UNHS monitoring was conducted through the…
