Biofouling management in anaerobic membrane bioreactors
2020
Abstract This chapter is aimed at providing an insight on the main issues around the membrane fouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs). The analysis presented here shows that membrane fouling in AnMBRs is attributed to three major factors: membrane features, operating conditions, and wastewater characteristics. Several ad-hoc strategies have been implemented in literature to mitigate membrane fouling in AnMBRs, such as gas sparging, media addition, chemical cleaning, and membrane rotation/vibration. Among them, gas sparging is considered the most expensive strategy due to the high power requirement of the gas blower (up to 1.345 kWh m− 3). An accurate experimental and modeling ana…
A state of art on plastics in the oceans: Observation and Mitigation Methods
2019
Marine wildlife faces a growing number of threats across the globe, and the survival of many species and populations will be dependent on conservation action. The aim of this paper is a presentation of mitigation methods overview about plastics in the ocean, in fact plastic pollution is increasing and in order to mitigate this problem, technology might give the solution
A short survey on climate change and environmental innovations
2022
Climate change is and will be in the coming years one of the major challenges facing the world. The best strategy to cope with climate anomalies seems to be fostering the ability to innovate and find tech-nological solutions. Therefore, understanding the relationship between the stimuli brought about by climate variability and the propensity to innovate is of paramount importance. To this end, this chapter provides some background on climate change and innovation economics and then focuses on climate-induced innovation in the context of mitigation technologies and adaptation strategies.
Sospensione riproduttiva temporanea: etica delle popolazioni e cambiamento climatico
2012
The article defends a proposal of demographic self-limitation that should be realized by the citizens of industrialized countries as a contribution to the reduction of global emissions, for the benefit of future generations and emerging countries. It will also argue that many of the practical objections to the feasibility of this kind of voluntary choice are surmountable, as are some moral objections raised in the name of reproductive freedom and the value of future lives that would not be lived as a result of this choice.
Practices of development assistance and climate change mitigation in reshaping the Mozambican REDD+ strategy
2020
ABSTRACTThis paper studies how the practices of climate change governance and development assistance have reshaped the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) process in Mozambique. We look at how the original goals of the Mozambican REDD+ strategy changed in the interplay of different governance-related practices, both those originating locally and nationally, and those coming from international organisations. The paper is based on the frameworks of multilevel governance and practice theory. We identify six combinations of practices that are relevant in the REDD+ programmes and projects. Three of them are incorporated in the general idea of sustainability, inclu…
Multipactor Mitigation in Coaxial Lines by Means of Permanent Magnets
2014
The main aim of this paper is the analysis of the feasibility of employing permanent magnets for the multipactor mitigation in a coaxial waveguide. First, the study of a coaxial line immersed in a uniform axial magnetic field shows that multipactor can be suppressed at any RF if the external magnetic field is strong enough. Both theoretical simulations and experimental tests validate this statement. Next, multipactor breakdown of a coaxial line immersed in a hollow cylindrical permanent magnet is analyzed. Numerical simulations show that multipactor can be suppressed in a certain RF range. The performed experimental test campaign demonstrates the capability of the magnet to avoid the multip…
Data for: Detection of Algorithmically Generated Malicious Domain Names using Masked N-Grams
2019
It contains the dataset used for the experimentation. Specifically, there are two text files, each containing 32000 different domain names. One file is clean domain names, the other file contains DGA domains. THIS DATASET IS ARCHIVED AT DANS/EASY, BUT NOT ACCESSIBLE HERE. Moisture absorption, thermal conductivity and noise mitigation of clay based plasters: The influence of mineralogical and textural characteristics
2016
Abstract Three pre-mixed clay based plasters successfully employed in green building practices in several European countries (Spain, France, Germany, and United Kingdom), mainly used for interior wall coating and finishing, were tested in this paper. Their compositional and textural characteristics as well as plastic behaviour were investigated through a multi-analytical approach in a previous paper. A natural earth (Terra Rossa red soil sampled in north-western Sicily), theoretically appropriate for the production of earthen plaster, was also subjected to the same analytical routine and compared with the three commercially available products. Humidity control capacity by the determination …
Paysage & [et] infrastructures de transport : modélisation des impacts des infrastructures sur les réseaux écologiques
2013
The development of linear infrastructures leads to the fragmentation and the artificialisation of the landscape across scales. Landscape fragmentation is a spatial process that is accompanied by a progressive decrease of the connectivity between the elements needed to conduct ecological processes. Thus, maintaining a good level of connectivity between natural habitats, compatible with human activities, has become a major issue for the preservation of biodiversity.By mobilizing methods from graph theory and landscape ecology, the thesis seeks to demonstrate the value of landscape graphs to model ecological networks and analyze impacts of transportation infrastructures at regional scale. The m…
This study presents the results obtained from the analysis of the Spanish discourse particle digamos in colloquial corpus. The Val.Es.Co. proposal (Briz et alii 2003, 2014) and the Es.Var.Atenuación analysis sheet (Albelda et alii 2014) ar…
