Mitochondria-related encephalomyopathies.

1989

Owing to advances in morphological and biochemical techniques, the mitochondria-related myopathies and encephalomyopathies have emerged as a still rapidly growing group of primary and secondary metabolic disorders, which may extend from infancy to late adulthood. Impairment of the biochemically diversified mitochondria is reflected in an enormous number of deficiencies, often affecting several mitochondrial enzymes in the same patient; morphologically abnormal mitochondria are common and are thus not specific to individual mitochondrial enzyme deficiencies. Skeletal muscle biopsies have provided a wealth of data through histological and histochemical studies and from isolated mitochondria. …

The cytochrome system in mitochondria of unfertilized sea urchin eggs

1958

Abstract 1. 1. The cytochrome system of unfertilized sea urchin eggs has been studied using preparations of isolated mitochondria. 2. 2. The difference spectra of isolated mitochondria show the presence of a complete and operating cytochrome system formed by the cytochromes a , a 3 , b and c . 3. 3. This cytochrome system is very similar to that of mammals and yeast as demonstrated by spectrophotometric and manometric experiments.

Latviešu mitoloģijas dievība Jumis un hinduisma dievība Jama: salīdzinošā analīze

2022

2022

Šis zinātniski pētnieciskais darbs veltīts izcilajam latviešu māksliniekam Janim Rozentālam, viņa daiļradei un pasaules uzskatam. J. Rozentāls bija talantīgs gleznotājs, grafiķis, mākslas kritiķis un teorētiķis. J. Rozentāla dzīves un mākslas pētījumiem ir veltīti daudzi zinātniski pētniecības darbi gan mākslas vēstures, kritikas, gan reliģijas zinātnes un filosofijas jomā. Šī bakalaura darba mērķis ir ielūkoties J. Rozentāla reliģiski tematiskajā glezniecībā un analizēt mākslinieka veikumu kristīgās un mitoloģiskās pasaules mijiedarbības kontekstā. Darba aktualitāte nosaka sniegt padziļinātu ieskatu J. Rozentāla glezniecībā, lai izpētītu mākslinieka sinkrētisko pasaules uzskatu, kas sakņoj…

Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman and the Myth of Týr: Addressing Contemporary Issues through Literary Tradition

2018

Increased Susceptibility to Skin Carcinogenesis Associated with a Spontaneous Mouse Mutation in the Palmitoyl Transferase Zdhhc13 Gene

2015

International audience; Here we describe a spontaneous mutation in the Zdhhc13 (zinc finger, DHHC domain containing 13) gene (also called Hip14l), one of 24 genes encoding palmitoyl acyltransferase (PAT) enzymes in the mouse. This mutation (Zdhhc13luc) was identified as a nonsense base substitution, which results in a premature stop codon that generates a truncated form of the ZDHHC13 protein, representing a potential loss-of-function allele. Homozygous Zdhhc13luc/Zdhhc13luc mice developed generalized hypotrichosis, associated with abnormal hair cycle, epidermal and sebaceous gland hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis, and increased epidermal thickness. Increased keratinocyte proliferation and accel…

Differential role of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase for cellular recovery from attack by pore-forming S. aureus alpha-toxin or streptolysin O.

2006

Following the observation that cells are able to recover from membrane lesions incurred by Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin and streptolysin O (SLO), we investigated the role of p38 in this process. p38 phosphorylation occurred in response to attack by both toxins, commencing within minutes after toxin treatment and waning after several hours. While SLO reportedly activates p38 via ASK1 and ROS, we show that this pathway does not play a major role for p38 induction in alpha-toxin-treated cells. Strikingly divergent effects of p38 blockade were noted depending on the toxin employed. In the case of alpha-toxin, inhibition of p38 within the time frame of its activation led to disruption of th…

Studies of Jak/STAT3 expression and signalling in psoriasis identifies STAT3-Ser727 phosphorylation as a modulator of transcriptional activity

2013

Jak/Tyk proteins have recently aroused as possible therapeutic targets for the treatment of psoriasis. In psoriasis, these proteins signal through STAT molecules including STAT3, and STAT3 expression and activation has been shown augmented in psoriatic lesions. Here, we characterized the expression of Jak/Tyk proteins in lesional compared with non-lesional psoriatic skin. Jak1, Jak2 mRNA and protein and Tyk2 mRNA appeared to be downregulated, whereas Jak3 mRNA expression was increased. Moreover, STAT3 expression and activation was examined in psoriasis. STAT3 is activated at two phosphorylation sites: Tyr705 and Ser727. Both phosphorylation sites were phosphorylated in lesional psoriatic sk…

Pore-forming Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin triggers epidermal growth factor receptor-dependent proliferation.

2006

Staphylococcal alpha-toxin is an archetypal killer protein that homo-oligomerizes in target cells to create small transmembrane pores. The membrane-perforating beta-barrel motif is a conserved attack element of cytolysins of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Following the recognition that nucleated cells can survive membrane permeabilization, a profile of abundant transcripts was obtained in transiently perforated keratinocytes. Several immediate early genes were found to be upregulated, reminiscent of the cellular response to growth factors. Cell cycle analyses revealed doubling of S + G2/M phase cells 26 h post toxin treatment. Determination of cell counts uncovered that after an …
