This article explores promising points of contact between philosophy and the expanding field of virtual reality research. Aiming at an interdisciplinary audience, it proposes a series of new research targets by presenting a range of concrete examples characterized by high theoretical relevance and heuristic fecundity. Among these examples are conscious experience itself, “Bayesian” and social VR, amnestic re-embodiment, merging human-controlled avatars and virtual agents, virtual ego-dissolution, controlling the reality/virtuality continuum, the confluence of VR and artificial intelligence (AI) as well as of VR and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), VR-based social hallucinations…

A General Framework for the One Center Location Problem

This paper deals with an optimization problem where the objective function F is defined on a real vector space X by F(x) = γ(w 1║x - a 1║1, ⋯, w n ║x - a n║ n ), a formula in which a 1, ⋯, a n are n given points in X, ║∙║1, ⋯, ║∙║ n n norms on X, w 1, ⋯, w n positive numbers and γ a monotone norm on ℝ n . A geometric description of the set of optimal solutions to the problem min F(x) is given, illustrated by some examples. When all norms ║∙║i are equal, and γ being successively the l 1 , l ∞ and l 2-norm, a particular study is made, which shows the peculiar role played by the l 1-norm.
EXISTENCE OF THREE SOLUTIONS FOR A MIXED BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM WITH THE STURM-LIOUVILLE EQUATION
2012
Abstract. The aim of this paper is to establish the existence of threesolutions for a Sturm-Liouville mixed boundary value problem. The ap-proach is based on multiple critical points theorems. 1. IntroductionThe aim of this paper is to establish, under a suitable set of assumptions, theexistence of at least three solutions for the following Sturm-Liouville problemwith mixed boundary conditions(RS λ )ˆ−(pu ′ ) ′ +qu = λf(t,u) in I =]a,b[u(a) = u ′ (b) = 0,where λ is a positive parameter and p, q, f are regular functions. To be precise,if f : [a,b] × R→ Ris a L 2 -Carath´eodory function and p,q ∈ L ∞ ([a,b]) suchthatp 0 := essinf t∈[a,b] p(t) > 0, q 0 := essinf t∈[a,b] q(t) ≥ 0,then we prove …

Utilizzia…
The importance of the inland leg of containerised maritime shipments: An analysis of modal choice determinants in Spain
2011
Abstract While most of the studies that address competition between road and rail transport focus on national or international non-maritime shipments, there is practically no empirical evidence on the modal choice determinants of the inland leg of maritime shipments. This paper intends to fill that gap by estimating a modal choice model between road and rail transport on the inland leg of Spanish containerised maritime freight shipments, using a mixed logit model and stated preference techniques. The results obtained confirm the vital role that frequency plays in the relative competitiveness of rail transport and also provide subjective values of transport attributes that are deemed essenti…
A Reconfigurable Immersive Workbench and Wall-System for Designing and Training in 3D Environments
2007
Virtual and Augmented Reality have been widely used in many scientific fields for the last two decades in order to visualize complex data and information. Although both techniques are oriented to show users complex 3D environments by means of an intuitive and easy mechanism, they use to become useless to manipulate the information in an intuitive and realistic way. In this paper, we present SOROLLA, a new concept of workbench designed for virtual and augmented reality purposes and specially oriented to the fields of teleeducation and engineering. Unlike other proposals, SOROLLA not only allows an easy utilization and configuration, but also shows a cost-effective immersive visualization sys…
