Bending stress fields in composite laminate beams by a boundary integral formulation
1999
Abstract The elasticity of a composite laminate under bending loads is approached through a boundary integral formulation and solved by the boundary element method. The integral equations governing the behaviour of each layer within the laminate, are deduced using the reciprocity theorem. Exact analytical singular solutions of the generalized orthotropic elasticity, i.e. the fundamental solutions of the problem, are employed as the kernels of the integral equation. The formulation does not make any assumption as to the nature of the elastic response and it allows consideration of general section geometries and stacking sequences. The solution is obtained through the enforcement of the inter…
Strain-gradient elastic-plastic material models and assessment of the higher order boundary conditions
2007
Abstract A gradient elastic material model exhibiting gradient kinematic and isotropic hardening is addressed within a thermodynamic framework suitable to cope with nonlocal-type continua. The Clausius–Duhem inequality is used, in conjunction with the concepts of energy residual, insulation condition and locality recovery condition, to derive all the pertinent restrictions upon the constitutive equations, including the PDEs and the related higher order (HO) boundary conditions that govern the gradient material behaviour. Through a suitable limiting procedure, the HO boundary conditions are shown to interpret the action, upon the body's boundary surface, of idealized extra HO constraints cap…
A four-node MITC finite element for magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates
2013
An isoparametric four-node finite element for multilayered magneto-electro-elastic plates analysis is presented. It is based on an equivalent single-layer model, which assumes the first order shear deformation theory and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields. First, the electro-magnetic state of the plate is determined in terms of the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements, by solving the strong form of the magneto-electric governing equations coupled with the electro-magnetic interface continuity conditions and the external boundary conditions. In turn, this result is used into the layers constitutive law to infer the equivalent single-layer…
A finite element formulation for large deflection of multilayered magneto-electro-elastic plates
2014
An original finite element formulation for the analysis of large deflections in magneto-electro-elastic multilayered plates is presented. The formulation is based on an equivalent single-layer model in which first order shear deformation theory with von Karman strains and quasi-static behavior for the electric and magnetic fields are assumed. To obtain the plate model, the electro-magnetic state is firstly determined and condensed to the mechanical primary variables, namely the generalized displacements. In turn, this result is used to obtain laminate effective stiffness coefficients that allow to express the plate mechanical stress resultants in terms of the generalized displacements and a…
Effect of temperature on ammonium removal in Scenedesmus sp
2015
The effect of temperature on microalgal ammonium uptake was investigated by carrying out four batch experiments in which a mixed culture of microalgae, composed mainly of Scenedesmus sp., was cultivated under different temperatures within the usual temperature working range in Mediterranean climate (15-34 ºC). Ammonium removal rates increased with temperature up to 26 ºC and stabilized thereafter. Ratkowsky and Cardinal Temperatures models successfully reproduced the experimental data. Optimum (31.3 ºC), minimum (8.8 ºC) and maximum (46.1 ºC) temperatures for ammonium removal by Scenedesmus sp. under the studied conditions were obtained as model parameters. These temperature-related paramet…
A Bayesian Approach for Timing the Neolithization in Mediterranean Iberia
2017
AbstractIn this paper, we compile recent14C dates related to the Neolithic transition in Mediterranean Iberia and present a Bayesian chronological approach for testing thedual model, a mixed model proposed to explain the spread of farming and husbandry processes in eastern Iberia. The dual model postulates the coexistence of agricultural pioneers and indigenous Mesolithic foraging groups in the Middle Holocene. We test this general model with more regional models of four geographical areas (Northeast, Upper, and Middle Ebro Valley, and Eastern and South/Southeastern regions) and present a filtered summed probability of all14C dates known in the region in order to compare socioecological dyn…
Boundary discretization based on the residual energy using the SGBEM
2007
Abstract The paper has as objective the estimation of the error in the structural analysis performed by using the displacement approach of the Symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method (SGBEM) and suggests a strategy able to reduce this error through an appropriate change of the boundary discretization. The body, characterized by a domain Ω and a boundary Γ−, is embedded inside a complementary unlimited domain Ω∞⧹Ω bounded by a boundary Γ+. In such new condition it is possible to perform a separate valuation of the strain energies in the two subdomains through the computation of the work, defined generalized, obtained as the product among nodal and weighted quantities on the actual boundar…
Impact of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets in mixed- matrix membranes for removal of heavy metals from water
2021
International audience; Removal of heavy metal ions from water is being a challenge and Polysulfone (PSf) membranes have shown great potential to remove them from contaminated solutions. In this work, the introduction of Graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4) into PSf membranes was implemented to improve the permeability and separation performance of PSf membranes. g-C3N4 was incorporated into the membrane matrix via nonsolvent induced phase inversion method. The prepared mixed matrix membranes showed enhanced performances towards water filtration. The incorporation of g-C3N4 into the membrane matrix caused an increase in the desired physicochemical properties like hydrophilicity and …
Bayesian joint models for longitudinal and survival data
2020
This paper takes a quick look at Bayesian joint models (BJM) for longitudinal and survival data. A general formulation for BJM is examined in terms of the sampling distribution of the longitudinal and survival processes, the conditional distribution of the random effects and the prior distribution. Next a basic BJM defined in terms of a mixed linear model and a Cox survival regression models is discussed and some extensions and other Bayesian topics are briefly outlined.
Effect of sludge age on microbial consortia developed in MFCs
2017
BACKGROUND This work is focused on the assessment of the performance of mini-scale air-breathing microbial fuel cells (MFCs), by monitoring the evolution of the bio-electrogenic activity for a period of 40 days and by comparing the microorganisms populations developed in each of the MFC after this period. RESULTS Five MFCs were operated at sludge ages ranging from 1.4 to 10.0 days. Results showed the superb performance of the MFC operating under a sludge age of 2.5 days. Desulfuromonas, Syntrophothermus, Solitalea, Acholeplasma, Propionicimonas, Desulfobacula and Sphaerochaeta are proposed as potential responsible for the bio-electrogenic activity. CONCLUSIONS Microbial population analysis …
