On some aspects of Borel-Moore homology in motivic homotopy : weight and Quillen’s G-theory

2016

The theme of this thesis is different aspects of Borel-Moore theory in the world of motives. Classically, over the field of complex numbers, Borel-Moore homology, also called “homology with compact support”, has some properties quite different from singular homology. In this thesis we study some generalizations and applications of this theory in triangulated categories of motives. The thesis is composed of two parts. In the first part we define Borel-Moore motivic homology in the triangulated categories of mixed motives defined by Cisinski and Déglise and study its various functorial properties, especially a functoriality similar to the refined Gysin morphism defined by Fulton. These results…

Inferring networks from high-dimensional data with mixed variables

2014

We present two methodologies to deal with high-dimensional data with mixed variables, the strongly decomposable graphical model and the regression-type graphical model. The first model is used to infer conditional independence graphs. The latter model is applied to compute the relative importance or contribution of each predictor to the response variables. Recently, penalized likelihood approaches have also been proposed to estimate graph structures. In a simulation study, we compare the performance of the strongly decomposable graphical model and the graphical lasso in terms of graph recovering. Five different graph structures are used to simulate the data: the banded graph, the cluster gr…

Kinetic Study of the Oxidation of n-Butane on Vanadium Oxide Supported on Al/Mg Mixed Oxide

1997

The reaction kinetics of the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of n-butane over vanadia supported on a heat-treated Mg/Al hydrotalcite (37.3 wt % of V2O5) was investigated by both linear and nonlinear regression techniques. A reaction network including the formation of butenes (1-, 2-cis-, and 2-trans-butene), butadiene, and carbon oxides by parallel and consecutive reactions, at low and high n-butane conversions, has been proposed. Langmuir−Hinshelwood (LH) models can be used as suitable models which allows reproduction of the global kinetic behavior, although differences between oxydehydrogenation and deep oxidation reactions have been observed. Thus, the formation of oxydehydrogenation pro…

Mixed finite elements for nonlocal elastic multilayered composite plate refined theories

2020

Abstract A novel mixed finite element formulation for the layerwise analysis of nonlocal multilayered composite plates is presented. The finite elements are formulated starting from the weak form of a set of governing equations for the laminate layers that were deduced via the Reissner Mixed Variational Theorem. The primary variables, namely displacements and out-of-plane stresses, are expressed at layer level as through-the-thickness expansions of suitable selected functions with coefficients approximated by the finite element scheme. The through-the-thickness expansion order is considered as a free parameter. This way, finite elements for different refined higher order plate theories can …

A preliminary comparison between finite element and meshless simulations of extrusion

2009

In this paper the extrusion process of a cross-shaped profile was investigated. In particular, the study was focused on the distortion of extruding profiles when the workpiece and die axis are not aligned. The process was simulated using the finite element method (FEM) and the natural element method (NEM), both implemented in an updated-Lagrangian formulation, in order to avoid the burden associated with the description of free surfaces in ALE or Eulerian formulations. Furthermore, an experimental equipment was developed in order to obtain reliable data in terms of deformed entity, required process load and calculated pressure. At the end, a comparison between the numerical predictions and …

Catalytic performance of CoAlZn and NiAlZn mixed oxides in hydrogen production by bio-ethanol partial oxidation

2013

CoAlZn and NiAlZn mixed oxides were prepared by sol-gel method and tested in partial oxidation of bio-ethanol (POE). At lower temperatures, CoAlZn showed higher ethanol conversion and higher selectivity to H2 and CO than NiAlZn. At higher temperatures, ethanol conversion on both catalysts reached 100%, while selectivity (S) to H2 and CO became higher on NiAlZn. At 750 C, NiAlZn showed S(H2) of 95%, S(CO) of 90%, while for CoAlZn these values were 90% and 83% respectively. Both catalysts were resistant to coking, but the amount of carbon deposits was still lower on NiAlZn. During 50 h on-stream, ethanol conversion and selectivity to H2 and CO on NiAlZn remained unchanged demonstrating stable…

Renormalized solutions for degenerate elliptic–parabolic problems with nonlinear dynamical boundary conditions and L1-data

2008

Abstract We consider a degenerate elliptic–parabolic problem with nonlinear dynamical boundary conditions. Assuming L 1 -data, we prove existence and uniqueness in the framework of renormalized solutions. Particular instances of this problem appear in various phenomena with changes of phase like multiphase Stefan problems and in the weak formulation of the mathematical model of the so-called Hele–Shaw problem. Also, the problem with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary condition is included.

A mixed-methods approach to developing an understanding of teachers’ attitudes and their enactment of inclusive education

2017

This research sought to develop an understanding of teachers’ attitudes, sense of self-efficacy and approach to enacting inclusive education in their classrooms in two diverse countries. A mixed-methods research design guided the data collection and analysis. This article focuses on how quantitative and qualitative research approaches were used sequentially and how the findings were finally merged to provide more comprehensive insight into different aspects of teachers’ sometimes contradictory attitudes and approaches to implementing inclusive education. The meta-inferences presented here indicate that merging measurements and meanings can shed light on how teachers’ attitudes and self-effi…

Journalism in virtual reality : opportunities and future research challenges

2016

This paper presents a state-of-the-art overview on journalism and its opportunities and challenges in virtual reality. First we take a look at what kind of real-life journalistic experiments there have been made in this field so far, then we analyze the research literature on journalistic VR. The paper proceeds to discuss the emergence of virtual reality and immersive journalism explored in the latest reports in the fields of HCI and VR design. In order to analyse VR-journalism further, early draft of analysis model is being developed based on sample of three VR-productions and four VR-applications. The paper concludes to discuss the results of the analysis and outlines more advanced and in…

NADH dehydrogenase deficiency results in low respiration rate and improved aerobic growth of Zymomonas mobilis.

2008

The respiratory chain of the ethanol-producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis is able to oxidize both species of nicotinamide cofactors, NADH and NADPH. A mutant strain with a chloramphenicol-resistance determinant inserted in ndh (encoding an NADH : CoQ oxidoreductase of type II) lacked the membrane NADH and NADPH oxidase activities, while its respiratory d-lactate oxidase activity was increased. Cells of the mutant strain showed a very low respiration rate with glucose and no respiration with ethanol. The aerobic growth rate of the mutant was elevated; exponential growth persisted longer, resulting in higher biomass densities. For the parent strain a similar effect of aerobic growth stimulat…
