Brief report - "Every little thing gonna be all right" (at least for me): Dispositional optimists display higher optimistic bias for infection during…

2020

Dispositional optimism (DO) and optimistic bias (OB) in risk perception are two distinct phenomena and previous studies about their reciprocal relationship report contrasting results. In the present study, we focused on the relationship between DO and OB when reporting the personal and the other persons' risk about COVID-19. We hypothesized that, when facing a largely uncontrollable risky situation (like the recent pandemic), dispositional optimists would defensively increase their OB about the current risks. A convenience sample of 414 Italian participants aged 18 or older were recruited. They completed a questionnaire investigating past protective behaviors, DO, perceived personal and oth…

Bayesian joint modeling of bivariate longitudinal and competing risks data: An application to study patient-ventilator asynchronies in critical care …

2017

Mechanical ventilation is a common procedure of life support in intensive care. Patient-ventilator asynchronies (PVAs) occur when the timing of the ventilator cycle is not simultaneous with the timing of the patient respiratory cycle. The association between severity markers and the events death or alive discharge has been acknowledged before, however, little is known about the addition of PVAs data to the analyses. We used an index of asynchronies (AI) to measure PVAs and the SOFA (sequential organ failure assessment) score to assess overall severity. To investigate the added value of including the AI, we propose a Bayesian joint model of bivariate longitudinal and competing risks data. Th…

Intelligent system for electrical heating control based on optical precipitation sensor

2018

Abstract The paper presents testing results of the SCADA system IntelHeat introduced at the Latvian Railways for automated heating control of railway points during winters with the purpose of electricity saving by optimized real-time assignment of heating levels. The system is based on innovative optical sensors of precipitation detecting rain and snow particles using diffuse and specular reflection channels. The results of trial exploitation demonstrated the ability of the IntelHeat system to manage points heating flexibly in accordance with changes of weather conditions and correspondence with archived meteorological data.

Empirical Study on Cyber Range Capabilities, Interactions and Learning Features

2021

Emerging technologies and the globalization require constant investment in people and their performance in actual and virtual environments. New technologies such as autonomous systems, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) radically re-contextualize the human dimension of the organization. Technological developments are changing the ways people experience the physical and the virtual environments. Strategic changes have revealed new critical vulnerabilities such as social media-based disinformation campaigning with impact on the human aspects at state, societal, organizational and individual levels. Scenarios of gathering information, committing fraud or getting access to critic…

Evaluation of the genotoxic and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase‐inhibitory potential of dicuran on procaryotic and eucaryotic test systems

2000

The effect of the herbicide Dicuran 500 FL (formulated product) on the phenotypical and genotypical changes in procaryotic and eucaryotic organisms was investigated using short-term tests for detecting genotoxins. Since pesticides discharged in the water environment can modulate the mixed-function monooxygenases (MFO) detoxification system of water organisms, the in vivo and in vitro effects of Dicuran on hepatic cytochrome P450 (cyt P450) monooxygenase activities were also examined in juvenile carp (Cyprinus carpio L.). By measuring the activities of MFO in experimental carp exposed to Dicuran an attempt was made to establish whether Dicuran could be bioactivated by MFO into ultimate mutag…

Metabolites of diethylstilboestrol induce sister chromatid exchange in human cultured fibroblasts

1979

Diethylstilboesterol (DES) is one of the few substances for which a clear association with carcinogenicity has been established in man. Nevertheless, it is still widely used, mainly as a cheap oestrogen to increase the slaughter weight of beef, but in spite of this it is not known if residues in the meat or metabolites excreted by the cattle are hazardous to man. It is also unknown whether there is a threshold dose below which DES is harmless. A threshold might be expected if a hormonal mechanism of carcinogensis rather than metabolic activation to an electrophically reactive species operats. This possibility was supported by the observations that DES, in contrast to most other carcinogens,…

Flexibility Services to Minimize the Electricity Production from Fossil Fuels. A Case Study in a Mediterranean Small Island

2019

The design of multi-carrier energy systems (MESs) has become increasingly important in the last decades, due to the need to move towards more efficient, flexible, and reliable power systems. In a MES, electricity, heating, cooling, water, and other resources interact at various levels, in order to get optimized operation. The aim of this study is to identify the optimal combination of components, their optimal sizes, and operating schedule allowing minimizing the annual cost for meeting the energy demand of Pantelleria, a Mediterranean island. Starting from the existing energy system (comprising diesel generators, desalination plant, freshwater storage, heat pumps, and domestic hot water st…

Postprocessing of a Finite Element Scheme with Linear Elements

1987

In this contribution we first give a brief survey of postprocessing techniques for accelerating the convergence of finite element schemes for elliptic problems. We also generalize a local superconvergence technique recently analyzed by Křižek and Neittaanmaki ([20]) to a global technique. Finally, we show that it is possible to obtain O(h4) accuracy for the gradient in some cases when only linear elements are used. Numerical tests are presented.
