The influence of sludge retention time on mixed culture microbial fuel cell start-ups
2017
Abstract In this work, the start-ups of air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs) seeds with conventional activated sludge cultivated at different solid retention times (SRTs) are compared. A clear influence of the SRT of the inoculum was observed, corresponding to an SRT of 10 days to the higher current density exerted, about 0.2 A m −2 . This observation points out that, in this type of electrochemical device, it is recommended to use high SRT seeds. The work also points out that in order to promote an efficient start-up, it is not only necessary to use high SRT seeds, but also to feed a high COD concentration. When feeding 10,000 ppm COD and keeping SRT of 10 d differences of current densi…

Transient behaviour of a “mixed” overhead-cable EHV line under lightning events
2009
Recently, in many countries have been undergone or are planning links with AC extra-high voltage (EHV) underground cables. Cable lines offer the possibility of a reduced environment impact and for this reason they are often the only alternative for the reinforcement or the expansion of power system accepted by public opinion. The coexistence of overhead and cable line in the so called ¿mixed¿ lines, however, raises several questions regarding their behaviour both in steady state and in transient. The purpose of this work is to investigate the transient behaviour of a mixed overhead-cable EHV line under lightning events, describing the effects of the following overvoltages on the system. The…

Coinage and Indigenous Populations in Central Sicily
2015
The study of the coins found in the indigenous settlements of Caltanissetta province and the analysis of the related contexts of provenance, have highlighted that in these centers, still in the 4th century BC, the coin was considered a worthless piece of metal and that other bronze objects were used as medium of exchange. It is remarkable the discovery in this territory of three “mixed” hoards, including not only coins, but also of bronze scraps and small fragmentary objects. These elements seem to show a late achievement, among those communities, of an economy based on the exclusive use of coins, that was a peculiar expression of the Greek culture
Le emissioni monetali della Fenicia prima di Alessandro - I
1997
The study illustrates the origin of money in Phoenicia, starting from the Bronze Age exchange tradition based on silver by weight and linked to the top-down structure of the Syro-Palestinian societies, up to the appearance of money, whose circulation and forms of hoarding are examined
Da «Nina» a «Belisa»: contagi veneziani (1788-1794)
2008
Giovanni Paisiello's "Nina o sia La pazza per amore" was one of the greates operatic successes of the late Eighteenth Century. The article studies its circulation in the Venetian area, as well as the reactions it produced as documented in theorical writings and newspapers. Moreover, the model of mixed dramaturgy exemplified by "Nina", characterized by the alternation of spoken dialogues and musical numbers, influenced some Italian authors. "Belisa ossia La fedeltà riconosciuta" by Alessandro Pepoli and the German composer Peter von Winter is one of the most interesting results of this experimentation, and can be considered as a sort of new "Nina" for the Venetian stage.
Educational Styles and Consequences of Birth of Children for Binational Couples
2014
The paper examines the dynamics of bicultural couples in which one partner is autochthonous and the other is of foreign nationality. Referring to family dynamics, has taken into consideration two levels of analysis: the impact that the presence of children creates on the dynamic of couple and the educational styles adopted. According to the basic assumptions of qualitative research, 22 mixed couples living in Sicily were interviewed. To analyse the contents, which emerged from interviews, the Atlas.ti software was used. Through the narrative method we explored the meanings that partners assign to their daily lives and differences they experienced. The birth of children marks the passage fro…
