Neutrino oscillations refitted

2014

Here we update our previous global fit of neutrino oscillations by including the recent results which have appeared since the Neutrino-2012 conference. These include the measurements of reactor anti-neutrino disappearance reported by Daya Bay and RENO, together with latest T2K and MINOS data including both disappearance and appearance channels. We also include the revised results from the third solar phase of Super-Kamiokande, SK-III, as well as new solar results from the fourth phase of Super-Kamiokande, SK-IV. We find that the preferred global determination of the atmospheric angle $\theta_{23}$ is consistent with maximal mixing. We also determine the impact of the new data upon all the o…

A Supersymmetric Solution to the Solar and Atmospheric Neutrino Problems

1999

The simplest unified extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with bi-linear R--Parity violation provides a predictive scheme for neutrino masses which can account for the observed atmospheric and solar neutrino anomalies in terms of bi-maximal neutrino mixing. The maximality of the atmospheric mixing angle arises dynamically, by minimizing the scalar potential, while the solar neutrino problem can be accounted for either by large or by small mixing oscillations. One neutrino picks up mass by mixing with neutralinos, while the degeneracy and masslessness of the other two is lifted only by loop corrections. Despite the smallness of neutrino masses R-parity violation is observab…

Combining first KamLAND results with solar neutrino data

2002

We consider the impact of the recent KamLAND data on neutrino oscillations, the first terrestrial neutrino experiment that can probe the solar neutrino anomaly. By combining the first 145.1 days of KamLAND data with the full sample of latest solar neutrino data we find an enhanced rejection against non-LMA oscillations, allowed only at more than 4 sigma with respect to LMA. Furthermore, the new data have a strong impact in narrowing down the allowed range of Delta_m^2 inside the LMA region. In contrast, our global analysis indicates that the new data have little impact on the location of the best fit point. In particular the solar neutrino mixing remains significantly non-maximal (3 sigma).

Bounds on sterile neutrino mixing for cosmologically interesting mass range

1997

This talk summarizes our recent work which studied the impact of resonant $\nu_e \to\nu_s$ and $\bar{\nu}_e\to\bar{\nu}_s$ ($\nu_s$ is a sterile neutrino) conversions on supernova physics, under the assumption that the mass of the sterile state is in the few eV -cosmologically significant range.

The effect of random matter density perturbations on the MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem

1996

We consider the implications of solar matter density random noise upon resonant neutrino conversion. The evolution equation describing MSW-like conversion is derived in the framework of the Schr\"odinger approach. We study quantitatively their effect upon both large and small mixing angle MSW solutions to the solar neutrino problem. This is carried out both for the active-active $\nu_e \ra \nu_{\mu,\tau}$ as well as active-sterile $\nu_e \ra \nu_s$ conversion channels. We find that the small mixing MSW solution is much more stable (especially in $\Delta m^2$) than the large mixing solution. The possible existence of solar matter density noise at the few percent level could be tested at futu…

Leptonic Generation Mixing, Noncommutative Geometry and Solar Neutrino Fluxes

1997

Triangular mass matrices for neutrinos and their charged partners contain full information on neutrino mixing in a most concise form. Although the scheme is general and model independent, triangular matrices are typical for reducible but indecomposable representations of graded Lie algebras which, in turn, are characteristic for the standard model in noncommutative geometry. The mixing matrix responsible for neutrino oscillations is worked out analytically for two and three lepton families. The example of two families fixes the mixing angle to just about what is required by the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein resonance oscillation of solar neutrinos. In the case of three families we classify a…

Bimaximal mixing from the leptonic new texture for triangular mass matrices

1999

An analysis of the leptonic texture for the new triangular mass matrices has been carried out. In particular, it is shown that both bimaximal and nearly bimaximal solutions for solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies can be generated within this pattern. We have also derived exact and compact parametrization of the leptonic mixing matrix in terms of the lepton masses and the parameters $\alpha, \beta'$ and $\delta$. A consistency with the CHOOZ reactor result for $V_m{_{13}}$ and a smallness of the Jarlskog's invariant parameter are obtained.

Neutrino masses from operator mixing

2002

We show that in theories that reduce, at the Fermi scale, to an extension of the standard model with two doublets, there can be additional dimension five operators giving rise to neutrino masses. In particular there exists a singlet operator which can not generate neutrino masses at tree level but generates them through operator mixing. Under the assumption that only this operator appears at tree level we calculate the neutrino mass matrix. It has the Zee mass matrix structure and leads naturally to bimaximal mixing. However, the maximal mixing prediction for solar neutrinos is very sharp even when higher order corrections are considered. To allow for deviations from maximal mixing a fine t…
