FMI4j: A Software Package for working with Functional Mock-up Units on the Java Virtual Machine

2018

This paper introduces FMI4j, a software package for working with Functional Mock-up Units (FMUs) on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). FMI4j is written in Kotlin, which is 100% interoperable with Java, and consists of programming APIs for parsing the meta-data associated with an FMU, as well as running them. FMI4j is compatible with FMI version 2.0 for Model Exchange (ME) and Co-Simulation (CS). Currently, FMI4j is the only software library targeting the JVM supporting ME 2.0. In addition to provide bare-bones access to such FMUs, it provides the means for solving them using a range of bundled fixedand variable-step solvers. A command line tool named FMU2Jar is also provided, which is capable …

Mock-up testing facilities and qualification strategy for EU ITER TBMs

2010

European test blanket modules (TBM) for both European blanket concepts, namely the Helium Cooled Lithium Lead (HCLL) and the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB), and their auxiliary systems have been designed in the last years. This paper presents the experimental facilities available in Europe for the qualification tests of European TBMs. In particular, devices designed to analyze specific technological issues, for example corrosion under strong magnetic fields or tritium management and extraction, as well as large scale facility to perform integral tests are described. A preliminary overview on the qualification strategy is presented and discussed.

A constitutive model for the thermo-mechanical behaviour of fusion-relevant pebble beds and its application to the simulation of HELICA mock-up exper…

2007

Abstract Within the framework of the R&D activities promoted by EFDA on the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed Test Blanket Module to be irradiated in ITER, attention has been focused on the modelling of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of both beryllium and lithiated ceramic pebble beds that are envisaged to be used respectively as neutron multiplier and tritium breeder. This behaviour depends, mainly, on the reactor-relevant conditions, the pebble sizes and the breeder cell geometries and a general constitutive model has not yet been validated, especially for fusion-relevant applications. ENEA-Brasimone and the Department of Nuclear Engineering (DIN) of the University of Palermo have performed inten…

Experimental tests and thermo-mechanical analyses on the HEXCALIBER mock-up

2008

Abstract Within the framework of the R&D activities promoted by European Fusion Development Agreement on the helium-cooled pebble bed test blanket module to be irradiated in ITER, ENEA Brasimone and the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo performed intense research activities on the modelling of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of both beryllium and lithiated ceramics pebble beds, which are envisaged to be used, respectively, as neutron multiplier and tritium breeder. In particular, at the DIN a thermo mechanical constitutive model was developed for both lithiated ceramics and beryllium pebble beds and it was successfully implemented on a commercial finite element …

On the theoretical–numerical study of the HEXCALIBER mock-up thermo-mechanical behaviour

2010

Abstract Within the framework of the R&D activities promoted by European Fusion Development Agreement on the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed Test Blanket Module to be irradiated in ITER, ENEA Brasimone and the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo (DIN) performed intense research activities on the modelling of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of both beryllium and lithiated ceramics pebble beds, that are envisaged to be used, respectively, as neutron multiplier and tritium breeder. In particular, the DIN developed a thermo-mechanical constitutive model for these pebble beds to be validated against the HEXCALIBER mock-up test campaign, carried out at the ENEA HE-FUS3 facilit…

Detection of a structural impact in liquid metal flow during test runs of the EURISOL target mock-up

2009

Abstract The many possible applications of Liquid Metal (LM) technology promise improved thermal efficiency, which can provide much-needed impetus to finding solutions for the growing world energy needs, as well as increasing the accuracy and power of certain delicate scientific apparatus used in the materials and biological sciences. The development of appropriate safeguards and instrumentation is critical to continued progress in this area of technology. During the hydraulic test of the EURISOL liquid metal target, a component failure was registered by the instrumentation; its detection in the presence of liquid metal flow was critical to ensuring the safety of both the personnel and the …

Structural-hydraulic test of the liquid metal EURISOL target mock-up

2009

Abstract Structural-hydraulic tests of the European Isotope Separation On-Line (EURISOL) neutron converter target mock-up, named MErcury Target EXperiment 1 (METEX 1), have been conducted by Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI, Switzerland) in cooperation with Institute of Physics of the University of Latvia (IPUL, Latvia). PSI proceeded with extensive thermal-hydraulic and structural computational studies, followed by the target mock-up tests carried out on the mercury loop at IPUL. One of the main goals of the METEX 1 test is to investigate the hydraulic and structural behaviour of the EURISOL target mock-up for various inlet flow conditions (i.e. mass flow rates) and, in particular, for nominal …

Estimating accidental coincidences for pixelated PET detectors and singles list-mode acquisition

2007

We have studied the validity of random estimation techniques for various low energy thresholds (LETs) and single list-mode data sets in small animal PET. While a LET below 255 keV helps to increase the sensitivity, it also results in an increase of random coincidences and inter-crystal scatter (ICS). The study is carried out for MADPET-II, a dual-layer positron emission tomography (PET) scanner prototype consisting of LSO crystals read out individually by APDs. The data are acquired in singles list-mode format, and coincidences are computed post-acquisition. To estimate randoms, we have used the delayed coincidence window method (DW), and the singles rate model (SR). Various phantoms were s…

A calorimeter for the precise determination of the activity of the 144Ce-144Pr anti-neutrino source in the SOX experiment

2018

We describe the design and the performance of a high precision thermal calorimeter, whose purpose was the measurement of the total activity of the 144Ce-144Pr anti-neutrino source of the SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillation with BoreXino) experiment. SOX aimed at the search for eV-scale sterile neutrinos by means of the Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy and of a very powerful artificial anti-neutrino source located at 8.51 m from the detector center. In order to obtain the required sensitivity, the activity of the source (approximately 150 kCi) had to be known at 1% precision. In this work we report the design of the experimental apparatus and the res…

Riga experience in spallation neutron target related investigations

2002

Abstract Mercury has awakened interest as a potential material for spallation neutron source targets. Institute of Physics, University of Latvia has a 30 years experience of investigations in mercury. As specially projected building includes a 350 m2 experimental hall. The largest loop, containing 5×103 kg of Hg, can be transferred for solution of different tasks. As the first example results are presented when integral developed pressure and local (distribution of void fraction) characteristics of a two-phase mercury/gas riser were investigated. Second example – investigation of velocity fields and heat transfer conditions close to the beam entrance window in the SINQ target thermohydrauli…
