Thermodynamics: Classical Framework

This chapter starts with a summary of the thermodynamic potentials and the relationships between them which are obtained from Legendre transformation. This is followed by an excursion to some important global properties of materials such as specific heat, expansion coefficients and others. The thermodynamic relations provide the basis for a discussion of continuous changes of state which are illustrated by the Joule-Thomson effect and the Van der Waals gas. Theoretical and Experimental Study of Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Photonic Crystal Fibers

Experimental observation of polarization modulation instability in all-normal dispersion photonic crystal fibers is reported. Stokes and anti-Stokes sidebands with spectral shift of 40 nm were observed when the fiber was pumped at 1064 nm. Experimental results are baked by a vectorial four-wave mixing model.

An Improved Method for Estimating the Time ACF of a Sum of Complex Plane Waves

Time averaging is a well-known technique for evaluating the temporal autocorrelation function (ACF) from a sample function of a stochastic process. For stochastic processes that can be modelled as a sum of plane waves, it is shown that the ACF obtained by time averaging can be expressed as a sum of auto-terms (ATs) and cross-terms (CTs). The ATs result from the autocorrelation of the individual plane waves, while the CTs are due to the cross-correlation between different plane wave components. Predictive control of networked systems with communication delays

This paper studies the problem of predictive output feedback control for networked control systems with random communication delays. A networked predictive control scheme is employed to compensate for random communication delays, which mainly consists of the control prediction generator and network delay compensator. Furthermore, a new strategy of designing the time-varying predictive controller with mixed random delays for networked systems is proposed. THE ARITHMETIC BOHR RADIUS

We study the arithmetic Bohr radius of Reinhardt domains in ℂ n which was successfully used in our study of monomial expansions for holomorphic functions in infinite dimensions. We show that this new Bohr radius is different from the radii invented by Boas and Khavinson and Aizenberg. It gives an explicit formula for the n-dimensional hypercone (which means n-dimensional variants of classical results of Bohr and Bombieri), and moreover asymptotically corrects upper and lower estimates for various types of convex and non-convex Reinhardt domains.

This paper investigates the problem of exponential H ∞ synchronization for a class of master-slave systems with both discrete and distributed time-delays, norm-bounded nonlinear uncertainties and Markovian switching parameters. Using an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, some delay-dependent sufficient conditions and a synchronization law which include the master-slave parameters are established for designing a delay-dependent mode-dependent sliding mode exponential H ∞ synchronization control law in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Self-regulation mechanism of an ecosystem in a non-Gaussian fluctuation regime

We study a dynamical model for an ecological network of many interacting species. We consider a Malthus-Verhulst type of self-regulation mechanism. In the framework of the mean field theory we study the nonlinear relaxation in three different cases: (a) towards the equilibrium state, (b) towards the absorbing barrier, (c) at the critical point. We obtain asymptotic behavior in all different cases for the time average of the process. Modal analysis for random response of MDOF systems

The usefulness of the mode-superposition method of multidegrees of freedom systems excited by stochastic vector processes is here presented. The differential equations of moments of every order are written in compact form by means of the Kronecker algebra; then the method for integration of these equations is presented for both classically and non-classically damped systems, showing that the fundamental operator available for evaluating the response in the deterministic analysis is also useful for evaluating the response in the stochastic analysis.

Second harmonic ac polarography of strongly adsorbed electroactive species

Abstract The second harmonic ac current is calculated for the case of a quasi-reversible surface redox system: both species are strongly adsorbed according to a Langmuir isotherm and the kinetics of the process are controlled by the electron transfer. The current is measured with a phase-sensitive detector and the variation of the in-phase and quadrature components vs. the frequency leads to the surface rate constant ks. The experimental results obtained for benzo-(c)cinnoline are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions and with the results of impedance measurements. The advantages of the two methods are compared.
