The relationships between urbanization and bird functional traits across the streetscape
2023
Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Authors The urbanization process leads to changes in bird communities’ taxonomic and functional compositions. Highly urbanized areas generally exhibit a reduced number of bird species sharing few functional traits. However, most urban bird studies focused on vegetation patches in temperate cities. In this study, we investigate how urban environmental attributes – noise, height of buildings, and urban vegetation characteristics – modulate species occurrences and the distribution of functional traits across the streetscape of a tropical metropolis. We predicted diverse trait-environment relationships, but that highly urbanized contexts (e.g., noisy streets with…
Kohtaamisia : yhteistoiminnan rakentuminen pariterapian reflektiivisten prosessien muutoskohdissa
2017
Pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastelimme vuorovaikutustutkimuksen keinoin, miten yhteistoiminta rakentui hetki hetkeltä pariterapian reflektiivisten prosessien muutoskohdissa. Käyttämämme aineisto koostui Jyväskylän yliopiston Relationaalinen mieli -tutkimushankkeen yhteydessä kerätyistä videoidusta pariterapiaistunnoista. Kävimme läpi 62 videoitua pariterapiaistuntoa ja valikoimme niistä yhdeksän reflektiivisten prosessien aikaista muutoskohtaa. Muutoskohtina käsittelimme sellaisia reflektiivisen prosessin aikana esiintyneitä vuorovaikutusepisodeja, joihin sisältyi näkyviä vuorovaikutusresponsseja kummaltakin asiakaspariskunnan osapuolelta. Kehitimme monitoimijaisten vuorovaikutusepisodien li…

In this article, we apply critical discourse analysis and ethnography to examine conceptionsand experiences of inclusive interaction and language use in the context of eldercare in aretirement home. Our data consist of interviews with residents, nurses and managers intwo bilingual eldercare units, as well as ethnographic observations of communication andlanguage use in these units. Our analysis focuses especially on language ideologies andmetalinguistic aspects of inclusive language in the context of eldercare. On the basis of ouranalysis, we suggest that four elements are particularly central to elderly-centric language: 1)the quality, quantity and tone of interaction; 2) the practices of …
Associations Among Teacher–Child Interactions, Teacher Curriculum Emphases, and Reading Skills in Grade 1
2017
Research Findings: The purpose of the present study was to examine the extent to which the quality of teacher–child interactions and teachers’ self-reported curriculum emphases are related to children’s reading skill development during their 1st school year. To accomplish this, we assessed the reading skills of 1,029 Finnish children (M age = 85.77 months) twice during Grade 1, and the children’s teachers (n = 91) completed questionnaires concerning their literacy-related curriculum emphases. In addition, teacher–child interactions in terms of emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support were observed in 29 classrooms. The results of multilevel modeling showed that a…
Eye gaze as a resource in handling trouble around mobile devices in classroom interaction
2022
This paper offers an insight into how interaction is multimodally built during taskaccomplishment around mobile devices in classroom interaction. More specifically, it investigates eye gaze as a resource in recruiting help and pursuing response from peers during interactional or task-related trouble sequences. The data come from video-recorded lessons at Finnish comprehensive schools where mobile devices are used for learning tasks. Drawing on multimodal conversation analysis, the article demonstrates that gaze is employed by pupils as one of the first resources to display and address trouble. Although tasks often require gaze to be directed at devices, it can be flexibly reoriented to peer…
Understanding Different Approaches to ECE Pedagogy through Tensions
2021
Publisher Copyright: © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. The concept of pedagogy is the key to understanding pedagogy in early childhood education (ECE) in the Nordic countries, which are known for their high quality of life and education. However, in ECE, there are several different approaches toward pedagogy and it can be said that pedagogy is a multidimensional and dynamic concept. In this paper, the different approaches to pedagogy are defined and reconceptualized through an integrative literature analysis focusing on scientific papers and research reports of the concept. Five approaches to pedagogy were constructed: pedagogy through interaction, pedagogy through s…

Examining Consumers’ Usage Intention of Contactless Payment Systems
2019
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop and test a conceptual model that combines the modified Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) with a consumer brand engagement (CBE) model to predict consumers’ usage intentions toward contactless payment systems in a developed country. Design/methodology/approach The authors cooperated with a contactless payment service provider in Finland and reached out to 22,000 customers, resulting in 1,165 usable responses. The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Findings The study shows that the UTAUT2 and the CBE model together explain approximately 70 percent of the variance in usage intention. Of the…
