Non-linear Correlation Coefficients for pushover analysis
2013
Aiming to put forward an improvement on Multimodal Pushover Analysis, a modified version of the modal correlation rule that takes into account the non-linear behavior of structures is proposed. The modification is primarily based on using the correlation coefficients consistent with the mechanical and dynamical properties of the hysteretic oscillators utilized in the MPA method, i.e. determined taking into account the second order statistics pertinent to the non-linear oscillators. Initially, the new correlation coefficients are evaluated by Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS), assuming a spectrum-compatible representation of the seismic input. The results of a large numerical parametric analysis…

A calculus for robot inner speech and self-awareness
2019
The inner speech is the common mental experience the humans have when they dialogue with themselves. It is widely acknowledged that inner speech is related to awareness and self-awareness. The inner speech reproduces and expands in the mind social and physical sources of awareness. In this preliminary work, a calculus based on a first-order modal logic to automate inner speech is presented. It attempts to make the existing inner speech theories suitable for robot. By making robot able to talk to itself, it is possible to analyze the role of inner speech in robot awareness and self-awareness, opening new interesting research scenarios not yet investigated.
Combining intelligent recommendation and mixed reality in itineraries for urban exploration
2017
Exploration of points of interest (POI) in urban environments is challenging for the large amount of items near or reachable by the user and for the modality hindrances due to reduced manual flexibility and competing visual attention. We propose to combine different modalities, VR, AR, haptics-audio interfaces, with intelligent recommendation based on a computational method combining different data graph overlays: social, personal and search-time user input. We integrate such features in flexible itineraries that aid different phases and aspects of exploration.
A Frequency-based Approach for Features Fusion in Fingerprint and Iris Multimodal Biometric Identification Systems
2010
The basic aim of a biometric identification system is to discriminate automatically between subjects in a reliable and dependable way, according to a specific-target application. Multimodal biometric identification systems aim to fuse two or more physical or behavioral traits to provide optimal False Acceptance Rate (FAR) and False Rejection Rate (FRR), thus improving system accuracy and dependability. In this paper, an innovative multimodal biometric identification system based on iris and fingerprint traits is proposed. The paper is a state-of-the-art advancement of multibiometrics, offering an innovative perspective on features fusion. In greater detail, a frequency-based approach result…
XPL and the Synchronization of Multimodal User Interfaces based on Design Pattern
2008
The great diversity of presentations in software applications deals with fulfilment of various types of user interface constructions related to different programming languages. Furthermore, the growing interest for multimodal applications entails that their user interfaces have to support multiple access channels within a single development framework. User Interfaces Design Patterns (UIDPs) are helpful to define interaction schemas between user and computer and they provide remarkable tools for the design and reuse of software components. This paper describes the eXtensible Presentation architecture and Language (XPL), a framework aimed at streamlining multi-channel interface design process…
A Multimodal Technique for an Embedded Fingerprint Recognizer in Mobile Payment Systems
2009
The development and the diffusion of distributed systems, directly connected to recent communication technologies, move people towards the era of mobile and ubiquitous systems. Distributed systems make merchant-customer relationships closer and more flexible, using reliable e-commerce technologies. These systems and environments need many distributed access points, for the creation and management of secure identities and for the secure recognition of users. Traditionally, these access points can be made possible by a software system with a main central server. This work proposes the study and implementation of a multimodal technique, based on biometric information, for identity management a…
Multi-modal Medical Image Registration by Local Affine Transformations
2018
Image registration is the process of finding the geometric transformation that, applied to the floating image, gives the registered image with the highest similarity to the reference image. Registering a pair of images involves the definition of a similarity function in terms of the parameters of the geometric transformation that allows the registration. This paper proposes to register a pair of images by iteratively maximizing the empirical mutual information through coordinate gradient descent. Hence, the registered image is obtained by applying a sequence of local affine transformations. Rather than adopting a uniformly spaced grid to select image blocks to locally register, as done by s…
