Infective endocarditis: review of 36 cases

In a retrospective study of cases of infective endocarditis (IE) observed in adult patients, the data of patients hospitalized for definite IE in the Cardiosurgery Unit of ARNAS-Civico in Palermo (Italy) from March 2003 to September 2006 were analysed. All cases were classified according to the modified Duke criteria. In all, 36 immunocompetent patients with "definite" IE were included (20 males and 16 females with a median age of 54 years). The aortic valve (23/36, 64%) was the most commonly involved, followed by the mitral (19/36, 52.7%) and tricuspid valve (4/36, 11%). In 10 patients (27.7%), a double localization was observed. To assess how the monocular steady-state accommodative stimulus-response curve is modified when viewing low-pass filtered natural images. Eighteen adult subjects participated in the study. The accommodative stimulus-response curve was objectively assessed by means of a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor. Measurements were taken at different accommodative demands. Target images were low-pass filtered versions of a natural image that were obtained applying different digital spatial filters that limited the spatial frequency content of the natural image. The objective of this study was to measure and monitor changes in Achilles tendon mechanical properties and force production capability of triceps surae muscles after 4 wk of limb suspension and 6 wk of physical rehabilitation. Five healthy volunteers underwent unilateral lower limb suspension followed by weekly physiotherapy. A velocity-encoded, phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (VE-PC-MRI) technique was used to estimate the tendon strain as a function of force produced during the submaximal isometric contractions. Abstrac Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcome of NK/T-cell lymphoma ‘nasal type’ developed in Italian patients. Patients: Between 1997 and 2004, 26 new cases of NK/T-cell lymphoma ‘nasal type’ were diagnosed in 10 Italian Hematology institutions. Results: All patients were Caucasian, male/female ratio was 19/7, with a median age of 50 years (range 20–80). In 23 cases presentation at the onset was in the nasal cavity or adjacent structures, in two cases the lymphoma onset with skin lesions was followed successively by rhynopharyngeal dissemination, while the remaining case had bone marrow and lymph node involvement followed by oro-pharyngeal involvement. Forty patients with advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCHNC) were treated with a combination of levofolinic acid 100 mg/m2+5-fluorouracil 375 mg/m2 in a 4-hour infusion plus cisplatin 20 mg/m2 in a 2-hour infusion for 5 consecutive days, repeated every 21-28 days. In the group of 20 previously untreated patients, a 90% overall response rate (ORR) with a 30% complete response rate (CRR) was obtained. In the group of 20 pretreated patients with recurrent and/or metastatic SCHNC, a 55% ORR with 15% CRR was achieved. We examined safety and efficacy of STI-571 in 24 bcr/abl-positive patients with CML post PBSCT. At start of STI-571 therapy, nine patients presented in blast crisis (BC) or in accelerated phase (AP), and 15 in chronic phase (CP). Patients were evaluated for hematologic, cytogenetic and molecular response, survival and toxicity. In general, STI-571 was well tolerated in this heavily pretreated group of patients with a non-hematologic and hematologic toxicity profile similar to that observed in a previous phase I trial at comparable doses.
