Tumour-growth inhibition by induced hyperglycaemia/hyperlactacidaemia and localized hyperthermia.

The present study was undertaken to exploit pathophysiological properties of solid tumours for a tumour-specific therapy. Experiments were carried out on DS-sarcomas implanted s.c. in the hind foot dorsum of Sprague Dawley rats. Treatment strategies included tumour acidification, lactate accumulation and disturbance of the microcirculation by induced systemic hyperglycaemia/hyperlact-acidaemia (15-25/10 mmol/L; for 60 min) as well as localized hyperthermia (water-bath; 43 degrees C, 30 min.). Effect of hyperthermia on tumor blood flow.

Differences in blood perfusion rates between tumors and normal tissue can be utilized to selectively heat many solid tumors. Blood flow in normal tissues is considerably increased at temperatures commonly applied during localized hyperthermia. In contrast, tumor blood flow may respond to localized heat typically in two different blood flow patterns: Flow may either decrease continuously with increasing exposure time and/or temperature or flow may exhibit a transient increase followed by a decline. Small Sample Biometric Recognition Based on Palmprint and Face Fusion

Contactless biometrics provide high comfort and hygiene in person recognition. Because of this, such systems are better accepted by the general public. This paper proposes an adaptive, contactless, biometric system which combines two modalities: palmprint and face. The processing chain has been designed to overcome embedded system constraints and small sample set problem: after a palmprint is extracted from a hand image, Gabor filters are applied to both the palmprint and face in order to extract parameters, which are then used for classification. The addition of interleukin-2 to cyclophosphamide therapy can facilitate tumor growth of B16 melanoma.

The role of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on tumor growth of B16F10 melanoma cells was assessed in two sets of mice with different immune status: normal (immunocompetent) mice and immunodeficient mice. The two sets of animals were treated with cyclophosphamide (CY) or IL-2 alone or with a combined therapy of CY+IL-2. On days 6 and 10 after tumor cell injection, we evaluated the incidence of hepatic B16 melanoma metastases and the percentage of hepatic volume occupied by metastatic tissue.
