An augmented MFS approach for brain activity reconstruction

2017

Abstract Weak electrical currents in the brain flow as a consequence of acquisition, processing and transmission of information by neurons, giving rise to electric and magnetic fields, which can be modeled by the quasi-stationary approximation of Maxwell’s equations. Electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) techniques allow for reconstructing the cerebral electrical currents and thus investigating the neuronal activity in the human brain in a non-invasive way. This is a typical electromagnetic inverse problem which can be addressed in two stages. In the first one a physical and geometrical representation of the head is used to find the relation between a given source mo…

Generation of even harmonics of sub-THz radiation in bulk GaAs in the presence of a static electric field

2007

The static electric field effects on nonlinear carrier dynamics in low-doped GaAs bulk under the influence of an intense sub-terahertz field are studied by a three-dimensional multivalleys Monte Carlo simulation. The conversion efficiency is calculated by using the appropriate Maxwell equation for the propagation of an electromagnetic wave along a given direction in the medium. Production of odd and even harmonics due to the nonlinearity of the velocity-field relation is investigated.

Sensitization of nanocrystalline TiO2 with 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid

2014

Optical properties of 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) in the presence of nanocrystalline TiO2 (nominal diameter 15 nm) have been investigated in ethanol solution and in the solid state by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy and steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence. Experimental results show that, in ethanol, the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles causes significant changes in the typical absorption and fluorescence bands of PTCA and in the fluorescence relaxation time. Similar effects are also detected in solid samples, obtained by electrospray deposition technique. The nonlinear optical properties of the PTCA-TiO2 in ethanol solutions were investigated using the single-beam Z-s…

High order normal form construction near the elliptic orbit of the Sitnikov problem

2011

We consider the Sitnikov problem; from the equations of motion we derive the approximate Hamiltonian flow. Then, we introduce suitable action–angle variables in order to construct a high order normal form of the Hamiltonian. We introduce Birkhoff Cartesian coordinates near the elliptic orbit and we analyze the behavior of the remainder of the normal form. Finally, we derive a kind of local stability estimate in the vicinity of the periodic orbit for exponentially long times using the normal form up to 40th order in Cartesian coordinates.

Numerical analysis of a new cross-flow type hydraulic turbine for high head and low flow rate

2021

Cross-flow turbines have recently been proposed for energy recovery in aqueducts when the outlet pressure is greater than zero, owing to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency within a large range of flow rates and head drops. In the case of high head drop (higher than 150 m) and relatively small discharge (lower than 0.2 m3/s), the traditional design of these turbines leads to very small widths of the nozzle and the runner; as a consequence, friction losses grow dramatically and efficiency drops down to very low values. Standard Pelton turbines require zero outlet pressure and cannot be used as alternatives. A new counter-pressure hydraulic turbine for high head and low flow rat…

Virtual prototyping of a new intramedullary nail for tibial fractures

2012

In this work a new distal interlocking system has been developed which is easy to use, allows a reduction of the operating time and consequently the exposure to radiations both for surgeon and patient. The main goal of this study has been the design of a new intramedullary nail for tibial fractures able to simplify and speed up the distal locking operation phases. After a preliminary stage during which several candidate concepts have been proposed and analysed, the best solution has been developed and deeply investigated. The new system, called “expansion nail”, has been firstly modelled by setting up a full parametric CAD model and, then, tested by running non linear FEM analyses to evalua…

Part program automatic check for three axis CNC machines

2001

Abstract The simulation and verification of NC codes for CNC machining is a very important task. The aim of this work is to limit the number of cutting tests needed to verify the right writing of the part program for a CN milling machine in the intent of saving time, human resources and money. This is obtained through the Boolean operation among solids, in AutoCAD environment, of the volume covered by the tool during the operations ruled by the part program.

Finite element modelling of temperature distribution in the cutting zone in turning processes with differently coated tools

2005

Abstract The aim of this study is to check the applicability of various simulation models to obtain finite element solutions of cutting forces, specific cutting energy and adequate temperatures for a range of coated tool materials and defined cutting conditions. Commercial explicit finite element code Thirdwave AdvantEdge has been used in simulations of orthogonal cutting processes performed by means of uncoated carbide and coated tools. The latter were equipped with progressively increasing number of thin layers including TiC, TiN and Al 2 O 3 films deposited onto ISO P20 carbide substrates. Results showing the tool–chip interfacial friction influencing the temperature distribution fields,…

Influence of correlations between stresses on calculated fatigue life of machine elements

1996

The correlation between components of the random stress tensor and its influence on the calculated fatigue life of machine elements were analysed. Three covariance matrices of components of biaxial stress state were considered. They were determined from measurements of strains in an element of a vibrating screen for aggregate, in the back wall of a bus, and in a welded element of excavator fittings. Calculations were made according to four criteria of multiaxial random fatigue. Cycles were counted with the rainflow method, and damage was cumulated with the Palmgren-Miner hypothesis. It was found that convariances of random stress state components strongly influence the calculated fatigue li…

Control of structural problems in cultural heritage monuments using close-range photogrammetry and computer methods

2005

This paper deals with the conservation of monumental buildings. Several methods used for the architectonic documentation are analysed in this study. Computers methods and close-range photogrammetry are proposed as a preventive method which allows to detect, measure and track the temporal evolution of some structural problems detected, and also to assess the degree of conservation of the materials employed. A group of monuments belonging to the Spanish historical heritage is analysed. In order to carry out the analysis a wire-frame model and a photo-realistic textured model were made. Work focused later on the area where structural problems were more acute.
