Large deflection of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates
2014
Abstract A model for the large deflection analysis of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates is derived. The first order shear deformation theory and the von Karman stress function approach are employed. A set of resolving partial differential equations involving kinematical variables and the stress function is obtained as a consequence of the preliminary condensation of the electro-magnetic state to the plate kinematics. A closed form solution for simply-supported plates is presented. Numerical results are carried out for plates consisting of piezoelectric BaTiO 3 and piezomagnetic CoFe 2 O 4 layers. These results show the influence of large deflections on the plate response and could be…
Buckling of a coating strip of finite width bonded to elastic half-space
2008
AbstractA solution for buckling of a stiff strip of finite width bonded to a compliant elastic half-space and subjected to uniform axial compression is presented. Approximate semi-analytical and finite element solutions are obtained and compared with a two-dimensional case of a plate on elastic foundation. The comparison demonstrates that the two-dimensional solution can be applied to predict the buckling wavelength and critical compressive strain when the width of the strip is equal to or larger than the buckling wavelength. For narrow strips, the wavelength is smaller and critical strain is higher than that of a plate on foundation.
Bonding behavior of Bi-metal-deposits produced by hybrid cold spray additive manufacturing
2022
Abstract Cold spraying (CS) is one of the most recently used additive manufacturing (AM) processes that allow forming large 3D objects efficiently without severe thermal effects. However, due to some limitations of the CSAM process, it is difficult to achieve the desired geometry with high precision. As a potential solution to this issue, CSAM process coupled machining, that is, hybrid addition and subtraction manufacturing, is proposed to achieve desired accuracy and reliable shape. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the mechanical reliability of multilayer deposits deposited by CSAM + machining processes before that. In this work, different bi-deposits were obtained via hybrid CSAM. The…
Synthesis and thermoelectric characterisation of bismuth nanoparticles
2009
An effective method of preparation of bismuth nanopowders by thermal decomposition of bismuth dodecyl-mercaptide Bi(SC12H25)3 and preliminary results on their thermoelectric properties are reported. The thermolysis process leads to Bi nanoparticles due to the efficient capping agent effect of the dodecyl-disulfide by-product, which strongly bonds the surface of the Bi clusters, preventing their aggregation and significantly reducing their growth rate. The structure and morphology of the thermolysis products were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispe…
Steady State Counterbalance Valve Modeling with the Influence of Synthetic Ester Oils Using CFD
2020
This study looks in details at the effects of synthetic esters being applied to a counterbalance valve from the perspective of a system engineer. There is limited literature on the subject of applied synthetic esters and as such limited unbiased sources for information. This creates reluctance against the use of these fluids in sectors and regions with no prior experience and knowledge of what to expect. This study expands the applied literature by investigating a commercially available valve using commercial oils, a basic synthetic ester, a fully saturated synthetic ester and a typical mineral oil type for benchmarking. The investigation is based on both computational fluid dynamics and ex…
Calculation of the elastic–plastic strain energy density under cyclic and random loading
2001
Abstract The paper presents a method of identification and calculation of the components of strain energy density under cyclic and random loading causing elastic–plastic strain in the material. The method consists in integration of the history of the strain instantaneous power.
Empirical model for stress ratio effect on fatigue delamination growth rate in composite laminates
2004
An empirical model is proposed for the stress ratio effect on the fatigue delamination growth rate in composite laminates under single-mode loading, intending to provide a simple and accurate description tool in engineering application. The model is based on heuristic considerations of damage accumulation ahead of the crack. Linear cumulative assumption is used for damage estimation. Comparison of the prediction based on the proposed model with the test results for different carbon, glass, and alumina fibre-reinforced composites at several stress ratios shows reasonable agreement.
Interfacial energy effects within the framework of strain gradient plasticity
2009
AbstractIn the framework of strain gradient plasticity, a solid body with boundary surface playing the role of a dissipative boundary layer endowed with surface tension and surface energy, is addressed. Using the so-called residual-based gradient plasticity theory, the state equations and the higher order boundary conditions are derived quite naturally for both the bulk material and the boundary layer. A phenomenological constitutive model is envisioned, in which the bulk material and the boundary layer obey (rate independent associative) coupled plasticity evolution laws, with kinematic hardening laws of differential nature for the bulk material, but of nondifferential nature for the layer…
Residual stresses and FCP prediction in FSW through a continuous FE model
2009
Abstract Residual stresses prediction is definitively a relevant and open issue in welding processes. In the last years, different numerical models are proposed by many researchers to predict the residual stress field in FSW butt joint. However, most of these works are based on properly tuned analytical models and neglect the effect of the mechanical action due to the presence of the tool pin. In the present paper, a continuous 3D FE model, which was previously developed by some of the authors, was used to simulate the FSW process of butt joints with a single block approach, and predict the residual stress field by considering both thermal and mechanical actions. Then, the residual stress e…
Energy models for fatigue life estimation under uniaxial random loading. Part I: The model elaboration
2001
The paper contains analysis of the energy models for the fatigue life assessment under uniaxial stress state. From the simulation tests it appears that taking into account the stress and strain signs during determination of the energy density allows one to distinguish the strain energy density at the tension and compression path. Under random loading with the zero expected values for Gaussion processes it leads to the centered stochastic process. A new (basic for damage cumulation) material characteristic can be easily determined by rescaling the widely used standard stress and strain characteristics of cyclic fatigue. A new model of the fatigue life determination has been proposed. This mo…
