Analysis, Modeling and Simulation of Complex Regional Clusters Activities, Using Arena Simulation Software
2014
Process modelling is the concise description of the total variation in one quantity, y, by partitioning it into a deterministic component given by a mathematical function of one or more other quantities, x1, x2... plus a random component that follows a particular probability distribution. The models are material or immaterial systems, which represent other systems, so that it may be possible to manipulate the built structures and their states. The main elements of a simulation are: attributes (describe and differentiate entities), variables (system characteristics), resources (whose capacity can be variable), tails (seen in case of unavailability of resources) and statistical accumulators (…
Monte Carlo simulation for the response analysis of long-span suspended cables under wind loads
2004
This paper presents a time-domain approach for analyzing nonlinear random vibrations of long-span suspended cables under transversal wind. A consistent continuous model of the cable, fully accounting for geometrical nonlinearities inherent in cable behavior, is adopted. The effects of spatial correlation are properly included by modeling wind velocity fluctuation as a random function of time and of a single spatial variable ranging over cable span, namely as a one-variate bi-dimensional (1V-2D) random field. Within the context of a Galerkin`s discretization of the equations governing cable motion, a very efficient Monte Carlo-based technique for second-order analysis of the response is prop…

Controlled Fault-Tolerant Power Converters for Power Quality Enhancement
2013
Power quality depends generally on the interaction of electrical power with electrical equipments. If electrical equipments operate correctly and reliably without being damaged or stressed, a suitable level of power quality is assured. On the other hand, if the electrical equipment malfunctions, is unreliable, or is damaged during normal usage, power quality is poor and probably the economical loss could be important like the technical one. In the scenario of the Distributed Generation, power quality issues will be moreover important because an higher dissemination of power conditioning equipment will be requested and this obviously increases the sources of vulnerability of the electrical s…
Expected principal stress directions under multiaxial random loading. Part II: Numerical simulation and experimental assessment through the weight fu…
1999
In Part I of the present work, the theoretical aspects of a proposed procedure to determine the expected principal stress directions under multiaxial random loading have been discussed. This procedure consists of averaging the instantaneous values of the three Euler angles through weight functions. In Part II here, a numerical simulation is presented to illustrate the above theoretical method. As an example, the algorithm proposed is applied to some experimental biaxial in- and out-of-phase stress states to assess the correlation between the expected principal stress directions and the position of the experimental fatigue fracture plane for such tests.
Re-analysis of fatigue data for welded joints using the notch stress approach
2010
Abstract Experimental fatigue data for welded joints have been collected and subjected to re-analysis using the notch stress approach according to IIW recommendations. This leads to an overview regarding the reliability of the approach, based on a large number of results (767 specimens). Evidently, there are some limitations in the approach regarding mild notch joints, such as butt joints, which can be assessed non-conservatively. In order to alleviate this problem, an increased minimum notch factor of Kw ⩾ 2.0 is suggested instead of the current recommendation of Kw ⩾ 1.6. The data for most fillet-welded joints agree quite well with the FAT 225 curve; however a reduction to FAT 200 is sugg…
Fuzzy topology discovery protocol for SDN-based wireless sensor networks
2017
Abstract The growing trend in pervasive systems forces traditional wireless sensor networks to deal with new challenges, such as dynamic application requirements and heterogeneous networks. One of the latest paradigms in this area is software defined wireless sensor network. According to the paradigm, the networks take care of managing topological information and forwarding decisions using a bipartite architecture in which a control plane decides the forwarding policies and the data plane (i.e. ordinary sensor nodes) executes them. Unfortunately, in highly dynamic networks, this approach generates an overhead of control packet exchange between the ordinary nodes and the control plane, that …
Modeling and simulation of dense cloud dispersion in urban areas by means of computational fluid dynamics
2011
Abstract The formation of toxic heavy clouds as a result of sudden accidental releases from mobile containers, such as road tankers or railway tank cars, may occur inside urban areas so the problem arises of their consequences evaluation. Due to the semi-confined nature of the dispersion site simplified models may often be inappropriate. As an alternative, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has the potential to provide realistic simulations even for geometrically complex scenarios since the heavy gas dispersion process is described by basic conservation equations with a reduced number of approximations. In the present work a commercial general purpose CFD code (CFX 4.4 by Ansys®) is employe…
Timber anti-seismic devices in historical architecture in the Mediterranean area
2017
Experimental analysis of the contact pressure distribution in an off-road tyre
2009
In this paper the results of experimental tests are shown, lead by extended method of measurement, on a tire for an off-road vehicle 175/82 R16, inserting Prescale paper at the contact with the ground. The experimental analysis of the pressures is lead, in cross-sectional direction, in 5 zones correspondents to the middle of the single dowels constituting the tread. The results are analyzed by means of software predisposed to the scope so as to go back easily to the value of the pressure. The obtained results are critically analyzed and the result are compared with those obtained by the formulas of Rowland and MacLaurin, and by the nominal pressure at ground, concluding that the expression …
