A Chemical Approach to the Modelling of Band Gap of Passive Films for Corrosion Studies

2015

Photocurrent Spectroscopy (PCS) has gained a large consideration in the last decades as in situ technique for the characterization of semiconductors and photoconducting passive film/electrolyte junctions being able to provide information on the location of characteristic energy levels like: flat band potential (Ufb), internal photoemission threshold (Eth) and band gap value (Eg)

Measurement techniques and modelling of multiphase systems.

2011

Multiphase systems are often encountered in process industry. Widely diffused applications and operations involve the contact between different phases (gas-solid, gasliquid, solid liquid, etc.) for different purposes, such as chemical reactions of physical operations (heat transfer, mass transfer). Multiphase flows are therefore one of the most frequent applied fields in chemical engineering. The present thesis is aimed at the development of experimental techniques for the investigation of multiphase flow in general, with particular focus on the analysis of gas-solid and gas-liquid systems. Notably, the development of image analysis techniques is the central thread of the present contributi…

MODELLING OF THE GROWTH OF NANNOCHLOROPSIS GADITANA IN DIFFERENT REACTOR GEOMETRIES, EXPERIMENTAL KINETIC PARAMETERS FROM BATCH CULTURES AND BIOCHEMI…

2022

Microalgae are unicellular and photosynthetic microorganisms that grow using inorganic salts, CO2 and light, and are applied in numerous industrial sectors due to their variety and properties. Due to the lack of information on how microalgae respond to external inputs and to the different environments in which they grow, today the industrial application is not exploited as it should. It is therefore necessary to create models that allow to predict microalgal growth in different photobioreactors to improve our knowledge, still poorly investigated. In this work the Monod equation for the specific growth rate was combined with the Lambert-Beer law for the non-homogeneous light distribution in …

A multi-scale tool for simulating electrodialysis with bipolar membranes systems

2022

In recent years, the global capacity of the desalination industry has increased to address freshwater scarcity, with reverse osmosis established as the leading technology. Brine disposal is a major issue due to the environmental impacts. However, novel brine management methods are oriented by (near) Zero Liquid Discharge strategies towards waste disposal minimization and resource recovery. In this context, ElectroDialysis with Bipolar Membranes (EDBM) can be utilised to valorise and, thus, repurpose the waste brine, thereby producing valuable chemicals, such as acid and base solutions, and recovering desalted water. However, the EDBM system must be carefully designed to meet the process req…

Simulation of bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) units by a validated process model

2022

The BMED technology can be used for the production or the regeneration of acid and base solutions by water dissociation. BMED has practical applications in several fields including in chemical and biochemical industry, environmental protection and, recently, even for brine valorisation. Many are the irreversibility sources involved in the BMED process. Some of them are related to the non-ideal transport properties of the Ion Exchange Membranes causing undesired co-ion leakages and water flux. Furthermore, the presence of shunt currents through the manifolds (i.e. distributors and collectors of the solutions) decrease the current efficiency. The aim of this work is to give a quantitative des…
