Translingual retrieval relies on processing a source language to retrieve digital document content in a target language. From the perspective of successful browsing digital catalogues, probability of retrieving the full text document in a language other than the query language is close to zero owning to the fact that it is not only the library collection, but especially a problem of matching the index terms with the query keywords which are assumed to be their translation equivalents. Abstract In a recent paper the authors proposed a mechanical model corresponding, exactly, to fractional hereditary materials (FHM). Fractional derivation index 13 E [0,1/2] corresponds to a mechanical model composed by a column of massless newtonian fluid resting on a bed of independent linear springs. A fully three-dimensional two-scale boundary element approach to degradation and failure in polycrystalline materials is proposed. The formulation involves the engineering component level (macroscale) and the material grain scale (micro-scale). Background: Exposure to cold or hot temperatures is associated with premature deaths. We aimed to evaluate the global, regional, and national mortality burden associated with non-optimal ambient temperatures. Methods: In this modelling study, we collected time-series data on mortality and ambient temperatures from 750 locations in 43 countries and five meta-predictors at a grid size of 0·5° × 0·5° across the globe. A discrete mathematical model for addictive buying: Predicting the affected population evolution

This paper deals with the construction of a discrete mathematical model for addictive buying. Firstly, identifications of consumers buying behavior are performed by using multivariate statistical techniques based on real data bases and sociological approaches. Then the population is divided into appropriate groups according to the level of overbuying and a discrete compartmental model is constructed. The future short term addicted population is computed assuming several future economic scenarios. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

Biogas from municipal solid waste landfills: A simplified mathematical model

AbstractMunicipal solid waste (MSW) landfills now represent one of the most important issues related to the waste management cycle. Knowledge of biogas production is a key aspect for the proper exploitation of this energy source, even in the post-closure period. In the present study, a simple mathematical model was proposed for the simulation of biogas production. The model is based on first-order biodegradation kinetics and also takes into account the temperature variation in time and depth as well as landfill settlement. Cancer growth dynamics: stochastic models and noise induced effects

In the framework of the Michaelis‐Menten (MM) reaction kinetics, we analyze the cancer growth dynamics in the presence of the immune response. We found the coexistence of noise enhanced stability (NES) and resonant activation (RA) phenomena which act in an opposite way with respect to the extinction of the tumor. The role of the stochastic resonance (SR) in the case of weak cancer therapy has been analyzed. The evolutionary dynamics of a system of cancerous cells in a model of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is investigated by a Monte Carlo approach.
