Sustainable Development Model of EU Cities Compliant with UN Settings
2021
Nowadays, the globally accepted UN concept of sustainable development (SD) is gradu®ally transferred to the city level, including small and medium-sized cities. The implementation of SD settings requires regular measurement of developmental progress to monitor the level achieved in statics and dynamics, and to make strategic decisions for the next period. The existing urban SD indicator systems and indices are not well-suited for the monitoring of specific cities. Benchmarking algorithms and mathematical modelling procedures were applied to create a methodology and mathematical model for measuring the achieved urban SD level and to ensure the most objective selection and proportions of key …
Contributions of statistical modelling for the understanding of the nivo-glaciological dynamics of a small arctic glacial basin (Austre Lovén glacier…
2021
Since the middle of the 19th century, the Earth has experienced a climate shift marked by a high rise in temperature (+ 0.85 °C over the period 1880-2012). The Arctic is the region of the world that is warming the most rapidly, at a rate of 2 to 3 times faster than the global average. In this context, all components of the Arctic cryosphere are experiencing a change in their dynamics. Because of their direct links with the atmosphere, glaciers are among the best indicators of these climate variations. Like other glaciers on the globe, the glaciers of Svalbard, which cover 60% of the archipelago’s surface, have been retreating since the end of the Little Ice Age. This retreat, which is refle…
Computational analysis of a multi-varied biomimetic neural network
2021
In recent years, astrocytes have emerged as such elements involved in inter-neuronal communication that they are increasingly considered in the synaptic coupling connecting neurons and synapses, thus constituting tripartite synapses. Many studies have focused on this astrocytic influence. With the description of the basic mechanisms of synapses, as well as the influence of gliotransmission, we emphasize that gliotransmission to extra-synaptic areas has so far been mainly studied in vivo and in vitro. We come closer to the paradigms used in AI, by proposing an analysis of the astrocyte influence on the variations of the parameters governing synaptic and extra-synaptic plasticity. We sought to…
A semi-empirical approach for surface soil water content estimation from radar data without a-priori information on surface roughness
2006
Abstract In this study, the spatial distribution of soil water content in an agricultural area of 30 km 2 in Southern Italy has been estimated by using high-resolution space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar data. Multi-polarised SAR images acquired during the SIR-C mission in April 1994 have been analysed by using the semi-empirical surface backscattering model derived by Oh, Y., Sarabandi K., Ulaby F.T., 1992. An empirical model and an inversion technique for radar scattering from bare soil surface. IEEE Trans. Geosci. Remote Sensing, 30(2), 370381. A site-specific calibration procedure of the cited model has been proposed to derive soil dielectric constant values without a-priori informatio…
Time series of Cosmo-SkyMed data for landcover classification and surface parameter retrieval over agricultural sites
2012
This paper reports on the results of an Italian project aimed at investigating the use of X-band COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) SAR data for applications in agriculture and hydrology. Existing classification and retrieval algorithms have been tailored to CSK data and time series of crop, leaf area index and soil moisture maps have been retrieved and assessed through the comparison with in situ data collected over three agricultural sites. In addition, the CSK-derived surface parameters have been integrated into crop growth and hydrologic models and the resulting improvements have been assessed. Results indicate that multi-temporal dual-polarized CSK data are very well-suited for agricultural crop class…
Using System Dynamics modelling to frame environmental voluntary commitment programs: the French experience
2021
This study stems from a research project aimed at investigating the factors facilitating and hampering the success of the EVE (Engagements Volontaires pour l’Environnement) program recently launched in France. Similarly to other countries, in which successfully environmental voluntary commitment programs are currently in place (SmartWay in the USA), EVE program aspires to improve transport operators efficiency and to reduce CO2 emissions in the environment. However, the multiple relationships between public and private actors involved in the program (ranging from the program coordinator to transport organisations), the complexity of transport and logistics sector (including the differences …
epiModel: A system to build automatically systems of differential equations of compartmental type-epidemiological models
2011
In this paper we describe epiModel, a code developed in Mathematica that facilitates the building of systems of differential equations corresponding to type-epidemiological linear or quadratic models whose characteristics are defined in text files following an easy syntax. It includes the possibility of obtaining the equations of models involving age and/or sex groups. © 2011.
Effect of Design Features and Operating Conditions on the Performance of a Bipolar Membrane-Based Acid/Base Flow Battery
2021
In the context of renewable energy sources, storage systems have been proposed as a solution to the issues related to fluctuations in the production and consumption of electric power. The EU funded BAoBaB project is aimed at developing the Acid/Base Flow battery (AB-FB), an environment-friendly, cost-competitive, grid-scale battery storage system based on the cyclic coupling of Bipolar Membrane ElectroDialysis (BMED) and its reverse, the Bipolar Membrane Reverse ElectroDialysis (BMRED) (Pärnamäe et al., 2020). Bipolar membranes promote catalytically water dissociation, thus allowing the storage of electric power in the form of acidic and alkaline solutions (pH gradient), obtained from their…
Facilitating organisational learning through teamwork-based knowledge management: evidence from Spain
2015
[EN] In the context of organisational learning optimisation through knowledge management policies, it is essential to pay careful attention to teamwork design and dynamics. Having these ideas in mind, the aim of our paper is to empirically study whether a number of knowledge management policies related to team design and dynamics facilitate organisational learning processes across the different ontological levels (individual, group, and organisational-institutional). Hence, we propose a model linking teamwork-design based on knowledge management policies (including the sub-dimensions of team composition, team bonding, and team bridging) and organisational learning. We test this model in a s…
Modelling the Interaction between Air Pollutant Emissions and Their Key Sources in Poland
2021
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between key sources of air pollutant emissions (sources of energy production, factories which are particularly harmful to the environment, the fleets of cars, environmental protection expenditure) and the main environmental air pollution (SO2, NOx, CO and PM) in Poland. Models based on MLP neural networks were used as predictive models. Global sensitivity analysis was used to demonstrate the significant impact of individual network input variables on the output variable. To verify the effectiveness of the models created, the actual data were compared with the data obtained through modelling. Projected courses of changes in t…
