Far-Field Optical Control of a Movable Subdiffraction Light Grid

2012

International audience; We demonstrate experimentally a subdiffraction light pattern, with a period down to 150 nm, at the surface of an optimized silicon nanostructured thin film. We show, using near-field and far-field characterization, that this subdiffraction pattern can be translated and rotated just by changing the illumination angle. The movable high frequency light pattern paves the way for subdiffraction resolution surface imaging microscopy without scanning near-field probes.

Analysis of multiple internal reflections in a parallel aligned liquid crystal on silicon SLM

2014

Multiple internal reflection effects on the optical modulation of a commercial reflective parallel-aligned liquid-crystal on silicon (PAL-LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM) are analyzed. The display is illuminated with different wavelengths and different angles of incidence. Non-negligible Fabry-Perot (FP) effect is observed due to the sandwiched LC layer structure. A simplified physical model that quantitatively accounts for the observed phenomena is proposed. It is shown how the expected pure phase modulation response is substantially modified in the following aspects: 1) a coupled amplitude modulation, 2) a non-linear behavior of the phase modulation, 3) some amount of unmodulated light…

Simultaneous remote extraction of multiple speech sources and heart beats from secondary speckles pattern

2009

The ability of dynamic extraction of remote sounds is very appealing. In this manuscript we propose an optical approach allowing the extraction and the separation of remote sound sources. The approach is very modular and it does not apply any constraints regarding the relative position of the sound sources and the detection device. The optical setup doing the detection is very simple and versatile. The principle is to observe the movement of the secondary speckle patterns that are generated on top of the target when it is illuminated by a spot of laser beam. Proper adaption of the imaging optics allows following the temporal trajectories of those speckles and extracting the sound signals ou…

Subjective Refraction Techniques in the Frame of the Three-Dimensional Dioptric Space

2001

A novel heuristic approach to the well-known representation of the dioptric power in a three-dimensional space is presented. It is shown how this theoretical framework is ideal for discussing the principles of several subjective refraction methods. In particular, this formalism is used to justify the stenopaic slit refraction, the Barnes subjective refraction technique, and the Jackson cross-cylinder procedure. In view of this analysis, some modifications to the traditional procedures are proposed.

Experimental realization of a new type of crystalline undulator.

2014

A new scheme of making crystalline undulators was recently proposed and investigated theoretically by Andriy Kostyuk, concluding that a new type of crystalline undulator would be not only viable, but better than the previous scheme. This article describes the first experimental measurement of such a crystalline undulator, produced by using Si(1-x)Ge(x)-graded composition and measured at the Mainzer Microtron facility at beam energies of 600 and 855 MeV. We also present theoretical models developed to compare with the experimental data.

Adaptive design optimization: a mutual information-based approach to model discrimination in cognitive science.

2010

Discriminating among competing statistical models is a pressing issue for many experimentalists in the field of cognitive science. Resolving this issue begins with designing maximally informative experiments. To this end, the problem to be solved in adaptive design optimization is identifying experimental designs under which one can infer the underlying model in the fewest possible steps. When the models under consideration are nonlinear, as is often the case in cognitive science, this problem can be impossible to solve analytically without simplifying assumptions. However, as we show in this letter, a full solution can be found numerically with the help of a Bayesian computational trick d…

A system-level mathematical model of Basal Ganglia motor-circuit for kinematic planning of arm movements

2017

International audience; In this paper, a novel system-level mathematical model of the Basal Ganglia (BG) for kinematic planning, is proposed. An arm composed of several segments presents a geometric redundancy. Thus, selecting one trajectory among an infinite number of possible ones requires overcoming redundancy, according to some kinds of optimization. Solving this optimization is assumed to be the function of BG in planning. In the proposed model, first, a mathematical solution of kinematic planning is proposed for movements of a redundant arm in a plane, based on minimizing energy consumption. Next, the function of each part in the model is interpreted as a possible role of a nucleus of…

Correlation, hierarchies, and networks in financial markets

2010

We discuss some methods to quantitatively investigate the properties of correlation matrices. Correlation matrices play an important role in portfolio optimization and in several other quantitative descriptions of asset price dynamics in financial markets. Specifically, we discuss how to define and obtain hierarchical trees, correlation based trees and networks from a correlation matrix. The hierarchical clustering and other procedures performed on the correlation matrix to detect statistically reliable aspects of the correlation matrix are seen as filtering procedures of the correlation matrix. We also discuss a method to associate a hierarchically nested factor model to a hierarchical tre…

Heather tiene 25 años. Madres y familias diversas en la literatura para primeros lectores (1990-2015)

2019

[EN] In 1989 was published the first edition of Heather has two mommies , that is considered the first children’s book of great diffusion about lesbian mothers. In Spain it was translated in 2003 under the title Paula tiene dos mamás. Since then, we have seen various legislative and social changes that have led to the generalization of this type of literature, although limited in most cases to some family and educational environments. On the other hand, the authors’ initial intention (to provide the sons and daughters of lesbian women with positive references of their own family models) has been complemented with other publications addressed to all the children from an inclusive and normali…

Unbekannte Leichen: Identifizierung mit einem Informationspool aus Gebidaten. Praktische Vorschlge fr die Neugestaltung der Befunderhebung und Bef…

1975

The masticatory system has often proved very useful for the identification of unkown bodies. The technique of excising the mandible and the maxilla is explained. The evaluation and the preparation of models are described. For registration of the findings a new form has been developed. It is based on the old form "KP 16" as well as on the PA status.
