Las grandes Exposiciones en Europa: 1992-2002. Efectos duraderos sobre la ciudad y apropiación por parte de la ciudadanía.

2012

This paper studies the influence of great contemporary Expositions on the transformation of cities and of territories, developing some aspects we consider relevant of these events: their growing relevance in urban contemporary politics and the urban and architectural project as creator of the regeneration of abandoned or obsolete areas. Against the short duration of these events, the positive and negative effects, like the definition of new urban and territorial domains, the modernization of infrastructures and services, the impulse of private stakeholders toward building lands and the consolidation of City-Brand in tourism nets among others, have a much longer duration, and depend on the u…

Automated procedures based on Market Comparison Approach. A pilot study in the city of Cosenza.

2017

The question about objective valuation is linked on the one hand to the identification of a large number of reliable sale data, on the other hand to the ability to control the critical evaluation protocol. Automating the valuation process, ensured by computerization of real estate data properly detected, provides a concrete answer to the problem of objectivity, allowing a significant control of the subjective component which characterizes the more traditional appraisals. Automatic methods traditionally proposed at international level are often set on multiple regression models, designed to build prediction functions that are valid throughout the study area, calibrating the coefficients on t…

A Quantum-Inspired Classifier for Early Web Bot Detection

2022

This paper introduces a novel approach, inspired by the principles of Quantum Computing, to address web bot detection in terms of real-time classification of an incoming data stream of HTTP request headers, in order to ensure the shortest decision time with the highest accuracy. The proposed approach exploits the analogy between the intrinsic correlation of two or more particles and the dependence of each HTTP request on the preceding ones. Starting from the a-posteriori probability of each request to belong to a particular class, it is possible to assign a Qubit state representing a combination of the aforementioned probabilities for all available observations of the time series. By levera…

ALTERNATIVE MODELS FOR BUILDING ENERGY PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT

2020

The research activity carried out during the three years of the PhD course attended, at the Engineering Department of the University of Palermo, was aimed at the identification of an alternative predictive model able to solve the traditional building thermal balance in a simple but reliable way, speeding up any first phase of energy planning. Nowadays, worldwide directives aimed at reducing energy consumptions and environmental impacts have focused the attention of the scientific community on improving energy efficiency in the building sector. The reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions for heating and cooling needs of buildings is an important challenge for the European Union, be…

Modeling of spanish household electrical consumptions: Simplified and detailed stochastic approach in trnsys environment

2013

The initial assessment of electric energy demands of a building is a key element in the design process, that should be integrated in the earlier stages of the design of a net zero energy building. The objective of the study is the creation of predictive models of household electrical consumptions in the Mediterranean/Spanish climate and its implementation in TRNSYS 17 environment. The models offer both a simplified level of analysis, based on average seasonal electrical consumptions trends and a stochastic in-depth level for the simulation of peak loads through the compiling of multiple TRNSYS types.

Indoor lighting quality: Effects of different wall colours

2016

This paper reports the results of measurements performed in a test room to investigate the impact of using different wall colours and light scenes on indoor lighting quality. Eye level spectral irradiances were measured for a user located inside the room and seated at a desk. These measurements allow the use of the Irradiance Toolbox, which makes it possible to calculate equivalent illuminances for the photopigments in the human eye. Moreover, the CIECAM02 colour appearance model was used to investigate the variations in hue and chroma values of the different wall colours when changing the light scene. The results demonstrate that there are significant variations in eye level spectral irra…

A new approach to model the effect of climate change on the building sector: A climate models data fusion

2020

Several climate models have been developed and used to forecast the effects of the climate changes, however the variability of results due to different models lead to a significant uncertainty on the estimation of the building energy use for the next century. In this context, the paper analyses this uncertainty and combines different climate models in order to improve the robustness of energy consumption predictions. The data of the climate models were then used to generate hourly weather files for the future period 2020-2099 and energy simulations for a case study located in Palermo (Italy) were performed. Results show a wide variability among all models (either alone or combined with our …

Calculation of the Electromechanical Properties of CNTs Under Deformation by Means of a Novel Numerical Model

The effects of mechanical deformation on the electron transport behavior of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of primary interest due to the enormous potential of nanotubes in making electronic devices and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). Moreover it could help to evaluate the presence of defects or to assess the type of CNTs that were produced. Conventional atomistic simulations have a high computational expense that limits the size of the CNTs that can be studied with this technique. Here we present a novel numerical approach able to simulate the electromechanical behavior of SWNTs and MWNTs of the dimensions used in nano-electronic devices. The numerical model was designed to realize orde…

The Role of Patient-Specific Morphological Features of the Left Atrial Appendage on the Thromboembolic Risk Under Atrial Fibrillation

2022

BackgroundA large majority of thrombi causing ischemic complications under atrial fibrillation (AF) originate in the left atrial appendage (LAA), an anatomical structure departing from the left atrium, characterized by a large morphological variability between individuals. This work analyses the hemodynamics simulated for different patient-specific models of LAA by means of computational fluid–structure interaction studies, modeling the effect of the changes in contractility and shape resulting from AF.MethodsThree operating conditions were analyzed: sinus rhythm, acute atrial fibrillation, and chronic atrial fibrillation. These were simulated on four patient-specific LAA morphologies, each…

On PD mechanisms at high temperature in voids included in an epoxy resin

2001

In this paper the effects of temperature on partial discharge (PD) activity taking place inside a spherical void in epoxy resin system are studied. Indeed, some experimental tests previously performed on specimens, having different void shapes, under multi-stress condition of temperature and voltage, have shown very different PD amplitude distributions at temperatures higher than ambient. However, this phenomenon cannot be explained only by taking into account the different thermobaric conditions of the enclosed gas. In consequence of the general physical inaccessibility of such voids, a study is here performed using a numerical model based on an evolutionary optimization algorithm. This is…
